Its pretty sad that it's almost kind of comical that this kind of stuff goes on with the #1 operating system. What does the everyday user (like our grandparents) do when they have to install XP... they dont have slashdot to come to for help. It's really sick that they can even charge for a product as poorly protected as Windows.
There's a lot of respondsibility with being Microsoft and honestly, I dont think they have what it takes to handle it.
I feel that the only reason IE is still even used is because its distributed with Windows. If Windows didnt ship with a browswer, people would be forced to make the browswer desision and FireFox would be much more wide spread than it even is today.
How long will you have to keep your "pen" connected for the data to be transfered. If you're going to have to hold your hand there for a while for bigger files you mind as well just use other methods of data transfer.
To me it just seems like another one of those novelty items. On the other hand, if they can get it to be as robust and enough mem like thumb drives, they could really take off.
I agree with the FCC as well on their ruling but they need to do 2 things. 1) Be more clear on what exactly was said that was offensive and 2) be consistant between different "offenders."
I may be bias because I get my info from howard stern but I think the FCC is completely off base. If you listened to howard stern this morning, they had a very good example of a WMMS employee that committed a federal offence and the only person that had to pay in any way was the guy that directly committed the offence. WMMS's licenes should have been revoked or at least suspended by their own rules.
Now with howard stern, the FCC does not even have a specific offence that he is being charged for yet Clear Channel is being fined for over a million dollars? It just doesnt make sense.
I think more people are moving to the "harder" distro's like gentoo, slackware, and debian specifically because of that reason: the mainstream distro's are getting to be too bloated when they ship default with KDE and Gnome.
I have KDE installed on my gentoo box but I only use it for its apps, I use openbox for my WM. Openbox + Gentoo = lean and mean.
Thats awesome but: "The war-sailing event was meant to show that WirelessLeiden is more than just a local city network."
how is it more than just a local city network?
Thats a good find but anyone could have taken any random picture and done that. I think the reason this is news is that the prof came up with a good way to represent the radiation as sound.
I knew nothing about Linux and used Gentoo right from the begining with no problems. There's no such thing as "too hard for newcomers" as long as the "newcomer" can read.
Does anyone know the actual point of filing for NFP is? From what I gather, they filed for NFP in the state so that they can apply for federal NFP which will make them tax exempt. So the whole point is so that Gentoo doesn't have to pay taxes as an entity?
That is correct. Big installs now have bins available if you cant wait for the compile. I dont even notice compile times when emerging programs - it just feels like they're being installed because the installation process is so quick.

So everyone would have to be on the same network to use this then?

Thats a very good point. Will the pens be cross-platform compatable? (another great feature of usb thumb drives)

It sounds like an awesome idea but I'm wondering whats retrainting it from working?
Or the battle of Troy
Or just a boat with a roof. =)
I'm guessing its wardriving but on boats ;-P Wardriving is driving around and looking for hotspots (places you can connect WiFi).

This is very cool for me because I'm planning on going to Purdue next year for computer science/math =)
Exactly what I thought - where's the iPod stuff?
Thats a good find but anyone could have taken any random picture and done that. I think the reason this is news is that the prof came up with a good way to represent the radiation as sound.
I agree to this: putting 'iPod' in the subject just looks like he's trying to gather attention.
I'm just wondering what program/algorithm the prof used to inturpret the radiation into "music" or something listenable?
What method did the professor use to turn the radiation into music?
Anyone have any speculations on what the price trend will be? Expensive? Cheaper? compared to similar products on the market.

Ah - this should be stated in the initial article. I should have waited to buy my Gentoo t-shirt. Coulda saved almost a dollar ;-P
