Walking along a beach he sees a man drowning 20 yards off shore. A democrat will throw a 20 yard line to the man and walk away to do another good deed.
Only, he then finds that everyone is starting to drown themselves 20 yards off shore since they know the Democrat will be there to save them. But the 'good' Democrat can only do so much. Eventually everybody drowns.
A piece of software that is filtering your spam is not being paid to do it. Yes it's creators were perhaps paid, but at least they are one step removed.
A paid human-based service doing spam-filtering, however, would have a direct motive to want as much spam flying around as possible, so as to have as many potential customers as possible.
I wouldn't be surprised if this company was created by and is being funded by the spammers themselves as just one more way to make money from spam!
.
Depends on your definition of 'usable' and your definition of 'secure'.
For example, a message that is encrypted with a one-time pad is absolutely 100% safe from an attacker in the information-theoretical sense. And given enough care it is possible to do this in the real world.
So in this sense, this is both 100% secure AND usable.
>> get away from this fixation of techno-babble saving the day
But the positron inverted flux field that was causing the crew's brain alpha channels to super-juxtapose just seemed to make so much sense...
OK so it's Saturday night and I'm at the bar, the DJ is blasting the sounds, and it's my round. Now how exactly is my credit card gonna hear me say anthing over the ear-splitting bass? Not to mention how is the bartender gonna hear my credit card squawk?
OK so your average./'er doesn't know what a bar is. I can almost see the blank stares....

What's wrong with money or nationalism?
Microsoft have just read all of your posts and have applied for patents for all of the ideas listed...
