I know quite a few friends who are recording their bands using Garageband or Adobe Audition. They record the raw tracks and then after all the recording is done, they hire a local sound engineer on an hourly rate who will master the recordings you have done down to a decent demo using your software. But, we're lucky in this music scene (Niagara, Canada) to have a guy who does this (thanks Greg!).

There are barriers to this cheapest of cheap method for getting decent sound. 1. Many of the musicians I know don't have the computer skills or the space to record using their home PC. 2. and this is the big reason: MOST INDIE MUSICIANS BUY INTO THE MYTH THAT THEY HAVE TO SPEND $25000+ TO MAKE A DECENT RECORD. It's a myth, sure, but it don't matter as long as musicians believe it.

With the newly combined features user friendly features from Conectiva (SMART package manager), Mandrake (drake config tools) and Lycoris (XP like control panels utilities etc and Iris software system that will probably give mandrakeclub a nice "click and run" like overhaul) Mandriva will have a strong chance to survive on the desktop.

Sure, it may not improve usability in itself, but having a consistent interface (say selecting Plastik in both Qt/KDE apps and GTKx) sure is pretty.

Progeny and Debian can stop it, but they need to jump aboard. There is no excuse for even "new", "unstable" packages to be 8 months old or older. The development cycle is too long for the market. And like it or not, They are getting left behind.

I won't argue that life +70 is too long etc, but the point that I wanted to make about opt-out verses opt-in copyright is that under the old system, a creative work was unprotected from plagiarism until the work was officially registered with the copyright office. Here in Canada, I mail myself a copy of my work to prove date of creation (left unopened) and I'm done. Maybe the current US copyright law went too far, but opt-out copyright as a system ain't all bad.

If they released an x86 edition of OSX I would switch in a second.

On the other hand, as has been mentioned above, it would kill their hardware business.

At the moment Apple is doing okay in the sense that their production is right around their demand. If you could throw together a system running OSX/x86 for $300 it may take on MS, but it would sink Apple's hardware division (except the ipod--they'll be selling gobs of those for the forseeable future)

Ya, I have Mac envy issues. I wanted an iMac Lamp for my next system, but couldn't afford to make the switch. So it's KDE with Baghira and Mosfit's Liquid running on Linux.

As someone who got in on the ground floor at www.mp3.com the first time (and has since had his music relegated to the basement ) because of MP3.com's sale, I find this very exciting. I remember when The Orchard was ONLY selling CDs from their own website and thinking "man that sucks, I'm better off setting up a server with my own stuff on Kazaa" but now that's all changed. If you want to market your indie music online (and get into the www.emusic.com family), The orchard is the way to go.

Upside? During install it autoloaded the Nvidia drivers with no configuration and the PC has been running smoothly since the last upgrade. All systems are go from DVD playback to CDr burning. It is my main desktop system and occasionally my wife uses it too.

Downside? Everything is running so smoothly that I don't dare break anything.

(sigh) At this point the only update I risk is KDE. I may upgrade to the KDE 3.3 MDK packages when they hit the kde.org download site (I'm running 3.2.3 and they are mostly stable) but I think I'll wait until Mandrake 11. It's too easy to get caught up in the frenzy. Linux can run for years without a restart, but I've yet to meet a linux geek who doesn't reformat and repartition his PC every two months. Mind you, with development in the F/OSS community constantly moving forward, and with nightly CVS snapshots, It's no wonder we have a whole lot of formating goin' on.

On a side note. I did get hit by the MBR bug BUT I installed Linux on a completely separate drive than WinXP. The MBR on my slave drive is completely messed. I haven't gotten around to fixing it because I can still boot into WinXP with no problems whatsoever. Besides, I'm just plain lazy.

I can't remember the name of the patent holder, but it had been filed around 1893 or so and the ghist of the patent was that it detailed a 4 wheeled carriage that could travel on it's own power without the aid of a horse.

This happens with every new technology. What is unprecedented is the move to patenting ideas over things. Ask me and I'll tell ya that's scary.

Usually when she takes over my PC, the first thing she does is logout of Linux and reboot into Windows bitching the whole time about how complicated Linux is.

I have both Opera and Mozilla installed in both partitions and I suggested she use Mozilla, explaining that it's "the newest version of Netscape"... no good..She spends most of her time on the Win98 box (HER PC) and only uses IE.

My Brother-in-law has managed to infect his computer with so much malware that at this point whenever he clicks on a download link in IE, it takes him instead to one of those generated on the fly search pages..

When I was over there last month, I installed and ran spybot search and destroy and ran a system scan in Norton and installed Mozilla... and suggested he use it.

Two days ago he called me to tell me he couldn't look at any pictures in his Hotmail inbox. He said he was getting the fake searchengine site again instead.

"Oh, I didn't think that would happen in Mozilla," I said.
