Microsoft has over $40,000,000,000 in cash and liquid assets. That's considerably more that Apple can say -- and has no direct correlation with recent quarterly earnings...
If this holds up, wouldn't this affect most business models for free web tools?
Can someone please explain this further to me? I'm at a loss to understand how Google's Adword's problems relate to free web tools, and their business models. The last time I checked, you had to pay for advertising. Please direct me to this free advertising center -- My boss would love the effect on the bottom line.
First off, if you had read the article, you would see that this isn't a virus, it's simply a sims player's simple modification to in-game items.
This is all on the scale of the sims, and has no bounds outside of a sims object.
You aren't going to see a sims toaster cooking your mbr...
For future reference, when securityfocus says hacker, they really mean 13 year old kid, but they don't have any real stories, so they play this crap up like it actually matters...
Is it me or does Gates seem to be very out of touch with what is going on in the real world and mostly seems to be getting his current information from his "Human Search Engines". Not to mention the fact he is constantly doing little more then plugging Micro$oft products.
I know it may be a bit much to ask for logic, but in all honesty if Microsoft pulls off their digital lifestyle business model, they will be a snug fit for exactly what the consumer market is looking for...
After all, he is the richest and arguably one of the most powerful men our society has to offer. I think some credit is due =P
Shocking - they don't seem to support DOS based Windows (9x and ME) even though there are arguably millions of infected consumper PC's. WinME boxes aren't THAT old.
If you are going to try and tear down MS, please at least use accurate information.
1. Windows 9x and ME are NOT DOS Based. The latest version of Windows that ran on top of DOS was Windows 3.x
2. Windows ME does not even support DOS applications, which was one of it's bigger gripes.
At least Linux comes with 99% of drivers pre-installed. With Windows you have to find them on the net first, then find some way of getting them to the target system (because you don't have a NIC driver, remember?).
Actually, Windows 2000 includes drivers for most NICs, as well as most video cards. Windows XP contains drivers for most all of your hardware...
Hopefully once a critical mass of people recognize windows for the utter trash that it is, you'll be finding new jobs.
By your logic, I am a garbage man. However, I am a garbage man who has made enough money writing software for the Windows consumer market over the last 6 years that I can now retire and live lavishly on the interest.
I have also experienced crashes with 1.0, both on a Windows 98SE box, as well as a Windows XP Pro SP2 box. Five or six incidents between the two machines.
just because you can't seem to find a way to do it dosen't mean it can't be done
Alright, great, I understand all of your points. However, the market for *nix software is miniscule when compared to the market for Windows software; So - what's the big draw into the *nix community? I mean, I could go write some fantastic software for *nix, but there's no consumer market to sell it to. On the other hand, I can write some crappy software for Windows and sell it because the market exists to do so. What I am trying to understand, is why everybody who is very devout to *nix, is so devout.
just cuz you can't figure out how to don't mean it can't be done
I'm not debating the ability of large corporations to be successful licensing Linux and related software, but I don't fully understand why the romantic aspects of becoming a skilled developer for Linux seem to outweigh the financial benefits of being a skilled developer for Windows, within this community at least. Yes, these companies are successful, but it is much more difficult for a small business, or individual to draw success in the same way.
No matter how bad Microsoft gets, we can always find it in our hearts to despise it just a little bit more....
I make six figures writing software for the Windows platform. How great are the tangible benefits of contributing to the open source community? That "monkey man" looks more like a successful business man to me.
For what, you might ask yourself?
A large part of a certificate is having your identity verified with the issuing organization, not just the technical ability to communicate via SSL.
Yes, please enlighten me as to where Microsoft has announced plans to spend $40bln in the near future.

You should check out these antennas from HyperLink Technologies. For outdoor applications these should work very well for you.
There was a PC lab at my high school donated by a local technical school. The administrator password on all the machines was "_teacher".
All the mirrors are up.

I can't wait until an upheaval erupts over the MS / *nix divide that defines the Slashdot crowd...
The Smart Package Manager is an intelligent tool that works on the 'dependency hell' of software upgrading and installation on linux.
I've found a great solution to this problem! They call it Windows!

What computing JOB can be done in Windows that can't be done as well or better by a Mac or Linux?
;)
How about the *small* group of people that develop software for the Windows platform?
I have also experienced crashes with 1.0, both on a Windows 98SE box, as well as a Windows XP Pro SP2 box. Five or six incidents between the two machines.
I use Windows, and sometimes OS X, so I guess that makes me an artsy snobby jack ass? =P

Let me know when you make your first million selling software for the a Linux platform.
I can't wait for the next Windows virus or worm to take down all the cash machines.
You are forgetting that Linux users can't make money selling their software, so this shouldn't be an issue!!!
I prefer MetaVNC as it is a "window aware" VNC, and allows a gnome desktop, for example, to coexist with a Windows desktop.
No matter how bad Microsoft gets, we can always find it in our hearts to despise it just a little bit more....
