  2. Re:If you're subscribed to him.. on Zuckerberg Updates Relationship Status To "Married" · · Score: 1

If you are both making $178K, maybe one of you should quit. What's the point of making this much money? The main advantage of getting married is codifying a division of labor and responsibility. One person to bring home the money--the other to take care of the house. It's nearly impossible to make this kind of arrangement when a couple is unmarried. This is a much more real life reason to get married than for tax purposes.

Use of male descriptors as gender neutral is far too convenient in allowing language to be interpreted in men's favor. In many instances, it was used to deny rights to women, while hiding the fact that women were excluded using ambiguous language. Consider: The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen.

  7. quake math? on 'Inexact' Chips Save Power By Fudging the Math · · Score: 1

Game programmers have already been making use of approximate math to speed calculations, like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fast_inverse_square_root
It seems like a hardware implementation could be a nice win for certain applications, assuming it can be turned on and off. But, I feel the level of accuracy for each application is different, so it will be hard to balance general purpose requirements in a chip. The chip maker might need to implement several different approximations for each function. Is the increase in power efficiency worth the increase in chip size?

  8. Re:Is this not the same as fuzzy logic? on 'Inexact' Chips Save Power By Fudging the Math · · Score: 1

No, this is different. Fuzzy logic is for dealing with situations where one cannot assign a statement to be completely true or false. It's a breakdown of binary logic, when a more nuanced view is needed. In fuzzy logic, one isn't finding an approximate solution to an exact problem. One is finding an approximate solution to an approximate problem.

How is that a guise? Visible firearms do cause a disturbance, and it makes perfect sense that they can make an officer feel uncomfortable, because they are an existential threat to the officer. Gun owners have a right to carry their guns, but that doesn't mean police will treat them the same as an unarmed person.

Percents are a way to express a fraction in a standardized way to allow for easy comparison to other fractions. Which is bigger: 29/32 or 51/56? It's hard to recognize which is bigger or how close they are because they have different denominators. If you express everything with the same denominator, it's easy to compare. We live in a decimal dominated society, so people just collectively decided that 100 is a good regular denominator for everything. Occasionally, some smart alec will express something as per mille.

But identifying the threat can be difficult due to their secretive nature. It would be negligent for us to withhold any tools at our disposal, including waterboarding, to get Mr. Cromitie to tell us WHO HE IS WORKING FOR. We have to strike at the head of the organization; only then can we win the war on terror.
