of course it doesn't helping running it off mysql and php, you could probably half your hardware costs running it off asp.net and sql server, but obviously shift the price up for Sql Server/w2k server.
Which then starts the argument hardware/software, having used php for years and seen its lack of power compared to j2ee,asp.net,compiled cgi I know which i prefer.

I wouldn't 1600s silver trade in the same league as taylorism, fordism and mcdonaldization (which have relied upon electricity and the petrol engine). Silver trade is hardly homogenization, what most people would describe as the main pitfall of globalization.
I've read that Perforce is the software Microsoft user (with modifications), although they will be switching to to Team System when it appears this year - which should be good as they'll actually feel the pain of their own source control system if it goes tits up.
It's a shame there's no free windows source control projects out there, for open source software that runs on windows (which there is quite a lot). Subversion has a client, but no server.
There's cvs but it's still pretty crappy , and the gotdotnet.com one which is very slow. All the enterprise source control software for windows is fairly good too, just way too expensive for private use.
I submitted this new article yesterday (when it appeared on neowin) and it was rejected. And now it mysteriously appears. Not that I could give a crapucino, but Timothy is obviously an attention whore.
I can't speak for SQL Server 2005 as I haven't been assed to install it, but the new features in vs.net 2005 are a large leap forward from the already good vs.net 2003, the refactoring tool and uml tool are nice, along with the quickcode style templates.
The argument with Microsoft and open source always returns to Microsoft open sourcing the Windows code. I'd love to hear a strong argument or business case for why they would ever do this. I'm not being cynical, I would be interested..
When a security scare occurs with OS X, does the community suddenly leap into action, fixing the problem for Apple?
That isn't a complaint about Tiger, per se: It's a high-quality release. But Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) was arguably a bigger advance over the initial release of XP than Tiger is over Mac OS X 10.3.
I don't think he mentioned that SP2 was a bigger step forward than OS X was, rather SP2 was a bigger leap forward than tiger is over OS X.
It's nice that he's finally come out of the closet.
However, this will probably impact on all those free Microsoft pens, cups, and beta operating systems he's been receiving for the past few years, will it not?
It's not been mentioned that HDR effects aren't going to be visible on flatscreen lcd screens, because of the limitations of the brightness scales they can display.
bye bye to scienceblog.com for a few hours.

"user" should read "uses". It's a shame comments.pl doesn't allow you to edit like most other forums do.

Apologies, I misread: http://subversion.tigris.org/project_packages.html
as not having a server, rather just not running on windows 98. I'll take a look, although does it have support for vs.net?

Sure, google pay them, but I can't imagine it'd match the advertising revenue, the whole basis of their online business model.

It's that time of the day again - Microsoft bitching hour. Let me start you off:
Evil M$$ and their monopolistic corporate greed tactics, viva la linux revolution!
The lack of back/forward functionality is definitely crippling and very annoying.
What I find worst is Macromedia's attempt at making their own form controls (textbox, drop down list), which are woeful compared to the native ones.
I can see the Linus vs Bruce bar brawl now - Pee Wee Herman and Mr Bean the rematch
is that a deliberate Murloc (WoW) impression?
