Remember the arcade game "Gauntlet?" You could put more money in for more life points. Paying for UO characters and property differs from that exactly how?

"She was later fired for cracking a ruler over some kid's head. "
Fired, but not locked away for 10-15?
Maybe she can still be brought to justice... What is the statute of limitations on felonious assault of a toddler?
I really think that should carry the same penalty as if a bum at the bus stop broke a piece of wood over your kids head. Hell, if somebody did me like that as an adult I would sure as hell press assault charges. It would not be hard to get somebody thrown in slamville for it. Poor innocent child, evil psychopathic woman.
"This country revolves around the almighty buck, and nobody wants their taxes to go up"
I think the problem is that we are well aware that we pay a fucking assload in taxes now, and we are not getting our money's worth. In fact, we are just plain getting fleeced. Why can't we ask for money for education to come from the already staggering amount of tax money we collect now? Look how much a single SAM costs; we don't have trouble raising money for those.
The argument that everything we ask for necessarily has to involve a tax increase is preposterous. What we're really asking for is accountability, and for more appropriate distribution of the money.
Isn't that one of the main requirements? That the "apparatus" being patented has to work? That way they stopped people patenting perpetual motion machines and so on...
"I am always amazed by the number of companies who really believe that keeping their encryption algorithms or security holes secret somehow makes them more secure."
It buys them time... If they publish their weak code or their security holes, they are in trouble right away. Otherwise they are in trouble, maybe, at some unspecified future time. "They" can live with that. One way they get money, one way they do not.
Another thing to consider is the soft job market. The people who wrote your code don't work there anymore, by and large. This is the downside of the ease of finding high-tech jobs, but I digress.
"(Of course it doesn't hurt when their grand [dragon? wizard? what do you call these bozo's?]get's arrested and convicted for raping a 12 year old and a 13 year old)."

It is not "just FUD"... I'd like to be able to post performance numbers, say from a specific number of operations between a Netapp filer and a sun, lintel, linux-alpha, dec-alpha, and winnt box, but I don't have the extra.25 million for the netapp... But please don't dismisss this report as FUD... We love linux to pieces but the NFS performance has been a showstopper for us. Tuning it isn't the solution; NFS writes are slow. No fud here -- it's a certainty, not uncertainty, no doubt about it at all.
(damned enter key, excuse me...) It seems like most of the responses lean toward "not using NFS" or "using something else (CODA, AFS)" but apparently we are still lacking in the NFS department.
Unfortunately for linux in at least one place I know, this is terrible. What if (your shop) wants to use Network Appliance for your storage solution? All of a sudden you have an argument against linux based strictly on a technical merit -- NFS Performace. Not good. (When you get a Netapp filer talking coda, call me!) Even dyed-in-the-wool linux advocates in my company are forced to bite the bullet and use other platforms because linux isn't suitable to task for NFS with lots of writes.
NFS itself is not to blame, after all Digital Unix performs well in this context. Even a commercial NFS implementation would be okay for a solution. Poor NFS performance has been a problem with linux for too many years now. I keep waiting for the problems to magically go away, but I guess they aren't going to. I've studied filesystems but still don't think I can fix this...

I'm not doing that. I'm trying to do my part to bring some sanity.
There are a few (very few) complicating factors to this crime which make it into hugely newsworthy material.
Other than those few things, it's just not that shocking, or even all that tragic. I don't even get what's so unusual about it. People kill other people every day in this country, I'd bet even in Colorado.

I think the problem with Python is that much
of the population is conditioned to loathe snakes.
The Xtians have that Adam&Eve&S@t@n thing to overcome.
People don't have this problem with Coffee, or with Oysters, Monumental French Towers, etc.

A proposition made by an entity that has a

I used it just fine, recently, on a 386/DX40/8Meg
