Actually, they use a much different and much more complicated technique:
1. Do everything by hand. This is strictly required.
2. Convert the message into decimal numbers -- a =1 , b = 2,...,y = 32 (using the expanded Estonian alphabet).
3. Modulo all the numbers by (x mod 24, where x = the sum of all the letters in the name of the previous president of Estonia. Currently, x = 132)
4. Multiply the numbers by 1918 (the year Estonia gained independence).
5. Substract 1991 (the year Estonia regained independence)
6. Lose the spaces.
7. Divide this long number into blocks of 24 letters.
8. Reverse these blocks/lines.
9. Transpose the gained matrix.

Except that what we consider to be the real world quite often turns out to be (almost) just as fictitious as LOTR. This is because we don't get much direct information about the outside world -- most of it has already passed through several stages of being interpreted, translated, edited, whatever. People are being lied to every day, all around the world (but can you call it being lied to if they don't know a different reality?). In a way, Real World is fiction (even the physical reality is fiction according to some). No wonder then that it's a bit hard to make a difference between these two.
In fact, I have just looked up the article, and it pretty much says just that. No 2.7 development branch plans!
If you look a level deeper -- ie read the article linked in the/. blurb -- you'll find that what they said was "2.7 will only be created when it becomes clear that there are sufficient patches which are truly disruptive enough to require it." Must be that this critical mass of patches is about to be reached.
Whenever some vehicle is called "environmentally friendly," this title always seems to be referring to its fuel consumption. It's as if fuel exhaust gases were all there is to environment. What seems to be neglected in these cases is that building the vehicle (or any other machine) also takes up resources, pollutes, etc. Is there any research being done in these areas as well, or are they simply not deemed as important as reducing air pollution from exhaust fumes?
Is there any justification what so freakin' ever this is a frontpage story?
Well, as you can see from the number of comments, it draws readers. Never mind that most of the comments are either saying "no, i don't have any problems" or "why is this news?" You could say pretty much the same about the rest of the front page stories as well: While their quality has arguably dropped, the number of readers is, according to Taco, on the rise.
Yeah, Slashdot has probably lost their old standards (if there ever were any, that is -- people have always been complaining about the dropping quality of stories ). But that's because its readership (ie the people submitting the stories) has changed. Slashdot has become mainstream, and so have the stories that get posted. So, suck it up, man!
They don't need to put all these people in jail. Convicting a small number of people is generally enough to make most of the others either comply or fight.
I haven't played the game, but from what i've read about it, some elements of the game do bear some resemblance to Tarkovsky's movie and/or the book it was based on ("Roadside Picnic" by the Strugatsky brothers). The idea behind the game -- "stalkers" retrieving strange artifacts from a guarded Zone filled with dangers and anomalies -- is most probably borrowed from that book.
Millions have died in past wars. Tens (or even hundrends) of millions died in the two world wars. Those that died in these wars are all but forgotten now.
Presently, numerous wars are being fought all over the globe. Noone knows exactly how many people have died in these. Yet, even they will be forgotten one day.
Therefore, you get the expensive green products from the US, or the just-as-functional products from China for half the cost. Why would the unenlightened masses spring for option #1?
Oh, it's really very simple. Just market everything "green" as good and people will practically fly to buy your "green" stuff, never mind if producing the "green" $product creates more pollution than producing a "regular" $product. And they'll even pay you double for the feeling that they're "doing something!"
Jobs and war and the economy aren't as important so making sure two dudes can't get married.
I know you were being sarcastic, but this is dead on. Wars and recessions have always come to pass, whereas cultural changes don't (or if they do, then only in long term). And many people are cautious of such changes, for they have reason to believe that changes are always for the worse.
And more importantly, on the occasion that it heats up, it can be quite entertaining.
*grin* Ahh, the Argument From Entertainment Value: it's fun, so it must stay. I bet the only reason why we have such thing as culture is that some monkey found it funny:H
I didn't say this. You can voice your issues in the YRO section (that's what it's there for, ya know), in journals, or at K5.
Yeah, i'm aware that there's no way Slashdot can do without political discussions (in fact, that's the reason behind the politics section), but the question is, in what form should political matters be discussed here? And is there any aspect of these matters that doesn't fit under any other category -- say, privacy, YRO, or business? This site is supposedly about technology, so what i'm asking is, is the/. front page really the right place to discuss political matters that don't have anything to do with technology?

If you are really serious about drinking yourself blind, help yourself to some methyl alcohol. Blindness is pretty much guaranteed. And so is death.
Meh? Last i heard, Chernobyl was in Ukraine. What happepened, did they move it to another country or sell it or something?

But only as long as you don't stop others from something different and new.

I had a bad day. That's all i can say right here and right now, but thanks for caring :7
Fuck you.
Currently, it's at (5, Informative). I guess some moderators do actually have a sense of humor :7
So you're predicting a Democrat victory? :H
*grin* Ahh, the Argument From Entertainment Value: it's fun, so it must stay. I bet the only reason why we have such thing as culture is that some monkey found it funny :H
So, will you submit it?

Discuss.
I predict that you're bound to get your ass kicked in such attire, for some drunken idiot will most certainly mistake you for the real Kerry :P
Its beauty was blinding?
I can still. Post. Here. Cool.
