  1. How about recording? on (Useful) Stupid Vim Tricks? · · Score: 2, Informative

In vim/gvim, I think the most useful thing I have ever used is the recording capability. It works great for editing HTML. If you have 10 lines that look very similar (such as a list of navigation links), start recording, edit the first line making sure that you end your statement with 'j' so that it moves to the next line, then finish recording and you can execute that recording for the next 9 lines.

To start recording, type 'q' and then a number such as '1'. This will record your next keystrokes into memory bank 1. When you're done typing, just hit 'q' to finish recording.

    So, if you had

    <h1>Foo</h1>
    <h1>Foo</h1>
    <h1>Foo</h1>
    <h1>Foo</h1>

    and you wanted

    <h1>Foo Bar</h1>
    <h1>Foo Bar</h1>
    <h1>Foo Bar</h1>
    <h1>Foo Bar</h1>

you would hit 'q1' to begin recording in bank 1, '^' to start at the beginning, 'l' (as in ell) 6 times to move six characters to the right, 'a' to insert after the last 'o' of "Foo", ' Bar' to insert the string, 'esc' 'j' to finish and move down one line, 'q' to finish recording, then '3@1' to execute the operation in bank 1 three times.

I can't count the number of times I have used this functionality! Makes coding immensely easier.

  2. Intriguing Idea on University Tries "One iPhone Per Student" · · Score: 5, Interesting

When I first heard about this idea a few months ago, I knew that there would be some interesting consequences. Being that I graduated from ACU in December of '06, I know many of the people involved and have heard stories about what it takes to accomplish such a task.

ACU had to re-implement much of it's wireless structure in order to accommodate all of the new devices and ensure that students would have wireless coverage at every conceivable place on campus.

It will be interesting to see how it pans out and whether or not it works as well as the faculty and staff have envisioned.

  3. Gentoo Servers on Gentoo On Server Considered Harmful · · Score: 1

I have been using Gentoo on my personal server for quite some time. I update about once a week and whilst I have to upgrade the configuration files, as long as I do it regularly, I tend to have no problems. My server has been up and running for over three months now and everything works dandy. I personally like the bleeding edge on my machines. If it were a true production server, however, I wouldn't update unless I absolutely needed a feature.

Not mentioned in the article Apple Computer, inc. has changed it's name to Apple, inc. Just a tidbit I thought I would mention.

  6. My PowerBook G4... on Apple Faces Up to the MacBook Whining · · Score: 1

...had the same problem. Occasionally, when I was using Blender, GIMP, or some other graphics program, I could hear the high pitched whining. When it was acting up, it would whine whenever I tried to move an object in Blender. Hit escape and it goes away, try to rotate/scale/move it and I hear it again. I always hated it, but it wasn't bad enough to make me get it fixed and it never seemed to happen in World of Warcraft so I just dealt with it. Interesting how it still hasn't been fixed though...

  7. What about wireless? on The Internet Meets the Neural Net · · Score: 1

At what point will it become a wireless connection? And who has read/write access? Who is root? You? What if we all had these wireless implants and someone (high up) decided they didn't want us to think badly of them. Especially since we were about to find out that he murder someone (or something like that). How hard would it be for the government to make us believe only what we wanted to believe? To think how they want us to think? And to live how they wanted us to live? (Oh wait! All of that is already a reality!)

  8. Secure your ... on Securing Mac OS X · · Score: 0, Redundant

There is a very easy way to secure any operating system. Turn your computer off. Other than that, there will always be venurabilities, and while you do want to make sure that if you need the security, you have it, most people don't need it. I have no fear that some hacker is going to come in to my computer and steal all of my personal files. Besides, even if he did, so what? I have nothing of real importance that isn't backed up. If you need the security that badly, hire an IT team.

  10. I agree on Memo to Apple: Respect Your Resellers · · Score: 4, Informative

I am an apple reseller. I work for a campus store where we sell Apple computers and a few other things here and there. I can't count the number of sales we have missed out on because we don't keep them in stock. But, being the size we are, we really can't afford to buy a bunch of computers and hope that people buy them. And with warrenty stuff, we can't even help people. If I can't fix it by myself really easily, I have to say "Here is the number, you will have to call them." And, I have to have a smile when I say it. It does't work. It would be fantastic if we could have a nice Apple front and have some things in stock, and a Genius Bar would be awesome. I know a lot of people who could do the job.
