You're forgetting the Trident D-5 Missile system, the submarine launched rockets that go into space and split into (16??) MIRV's. We still have 32 of these in an Ohio Class Submarine. Enough fire power to destroy a good portion of the globe. Those are WMD, not spy satellite launchers.

The root of the problem lies in the fact that when you use the distros mentioned in the article, control over what is installed is taken away from the user. Try this experiment, install Fedora C2 with no options, try to get a system with nothing on it. You'll notice that half the worl is still installed and running by default. People in the know will use a distro like gentoo for this reason, these bloated distros are a good way for linux newbies to have a working system out of the box, because the installer wont let you remove anything the makers of the distro have deemed critical for a robust installation, remote security holes and all. BSD also does not suffer from this problem, but there are tons of distro's out there.

This isn't really a new issue, I've been hearing about this since I started using linux 2 yrs ago.

  6. Copy Protection? on Recording Industry Hopes To Hinder CD Burning · · Score: 1

If a Beta version of this can be defeated by holding the shift key while the CD loads it isn't really copy protection. This wont stop any of the early 90's CD ripping utilities, and will not affect *nix users either. Unless they can force open source software to cripple itself to further their own agenda, like what happens with the DVD decoders for Xine, this wont stop anyone. A simple (maybe not so simple) editing of the registry, or reinstall of windows will reset the counter I bet. I seriously doubt that they invented self modifying media which can only be copied a limited number of times. Hell, look what happened with playstation 1 games, those things had state of the art copy protection, the masses are only as computer savvy as they need to be, they will learn to break whatever is put out there, like mice finding cheese.

Who's to say that the owner of an IP address is the person who was sharing the music? I dont know how it is elsewhere, but in my apartment building there are a few unconfigured wireless routers. Which by default have WEP disabled, so anonymous access to the web is available through this "proxy". Would this be a valid defense in court: "I had no idea people were sharing music from my IP address, I bought a wireless router to surf the web from any room in my place. I had no idea you had to actually configure it."

There seems to be nothing open and shut about this sort of thing, especially since most people infected by the bagel virus have no idea that they are spammers, will they be prosecuted under the CANSPAM Act?

Do you need to know how the math works to hack on a database? probably not. If you design a DB this knowledge is essential for making a coherrent efficient schema. Hacking on someone else's DB isn't programming and neither is the change one thing at a time until it works method of developing a DB schema.

  10. Why I used hotmail on Microsoft Will Sell Whitelist Services For Hotmail · · Score: 0
About 6 years ago hotmail was great. I didn't have my own computer and neither did most of my friends. Dial-up providers would usually only provide a single email address with an account and people wanted free private email.

Now, hotmail is crap. Within minutes of signing up for an account it has reached its capacity of SPAM and starts rejecting messages from being sent to it, at least it did the last time I tried using it about 3 yrs ago. A hotmail account these days is an invitation to SPAM, and to being filtered as SPAM by accident by an over zealous SPAM filter. If this change could revitalize hotmail, make it free, and have a useful amount of space, I might consider using it again. If I hadn't learned how to set up a mail server running Gentoo.

At my last job, we used exclusively log files for debugging since it was embedded development with a miniglx frontend. Thats the best method available until someone gets around to writing a custom debugger to use the serial port. It was a big pain in the ass since you needed to reboot from isolinux to read the logs. If this program could provide real time debugging on an embedded target, maybe using a PC simulation for comparison, it would be extremely valuable. It may not be applicable in that case, since it probably requires some sort of daemon running on each machine. If there was cross-platform and processor support it would be ideal for many situations. And for the record, _ASSERT( , ) == #ifdef DEBUG if( ) fprintf( , ); #endif since asserts are only compiled in for debug builds anyway.
