As far as I know, Word doesn't print out the highlighting that you can find in the toolbar. It does, however, print the color you set by the menu option.
A long term solution might be to also make the hardware opensource (release it under the LGPL), which is already done by some people. This makes a difficult design simpeler to understand. More hardware standards would also help...
I think it isn't a big problem to not beable to run outdated software... any software company wants to sell the new version, and from OSS you will get a new version for free...
