Reminds me of back when file compression was the big thing... one program would delete your file, then use UNDELETE trickery to get it back. Worked fine, until you overwrote those sectors or defragged.
No troll - after having been exposed to Mac OS X, I love it (and this is after years of Windows and Linux experience, and hating Mac for years because of pre-OS X's limitedness). However, I have had occasional slowdowns, and it does crash. Too, several of my colleagues have gotten macro viruses. Don't get me wrong - I love Mac. But it isn't any more stable than Win2k (XP is a matter of opinion), and it does get viruses.
In reply to everyone who's responded to the parent AC, I agree with the second paragraph, even if the first is FUD... sort of. While I think my mother could certainly click the terminal icon, type "$PACKAGE-MANAGER install photoshop" or whatever, she won't. If it says to in the manual, even if that's the only step, she'll take one look at the command line and decide that Linux is "hard". Ingrained fear - due in part to geeky arrogance of the sort that all of us here practice.
You can't use *.doubleclick.*? I do that in adblock. Granted, the hosts file and adblock are two totally different beasts, but I'm surprised the hosts file doesn't support regex.
What we need is to start prosecuting parents for the crimes of their children so that parents will start taking responsibility for their kids again.
Um, we do. Or do you mean we should stop prosecuting kids who are 16+ years of age? In which case, I agree (and yeah, I know, there are younger kids who are prosecuted. Sometimes a good thing, sometimes a bad thing).
Kind of like the CVS/moderator system many OSS projects use. Minor differences to take advantage of the difference between an encyclopedia and software... if they take you're idea and use it, I'm gonna be pissed - I've been suggesting this since the "ask your questions" part of the interview.
Maybe a Netscape 8.0 based on FireFox would have a better shot.
By the time they get to Netscape 8.0, Firefox will probably be at 1.0 (only 1 major version away!) and thus, Mozilla-based Netscape will be the same as Firefox-based Netscape (1.0 is when FF becomes the next Moz's browser).
Er, no. Whyline works with a (simplified, English-like) language called ALICE. Java is 10x more complex, thus making it difficult/impossible to get Whyline to understand Java. Ooh, I wonder where they got that "10x" from?
Almost forgot: I don't understand their system. OS on one disk, Office on another, drivers on 3 or 4 separate disks... why can't they just give me a DVD (or several CDs) with a disk image on it? And I don't understand (flame-retardant-suit on) why Microsoft doesn't include a "drive imaging" utility with the OS the way Apple does.
I needed to reinstall XP Pro, but didn't have the disk. So I called; the first guy told me it wasn't covered under the warranty (not true; I had the uber-extended-lifetime warranty), then finally agreed to send it to me. Sent me XP Home instead.
Second person, same deal - sent me XP Home after apologizing for not getting it right. Waited several weeks; it never came.
Third person, "we needed to order more disks" (this is after 3 weeks of waiting for a disk that usually takes 3 to 5 days to come). Promised to send a disk.
After 2 weeks, fourth person: "our database says you've already gotten it". After checking the dates, I point out that that was the *first* disk I was sent - the XP Home one - that I'd already told him about. He checked with tech support, and found out that their database has the same order # for Home and Pro. Corrected the order number, and (hopefully) sent me the Pro disk.
It's been 4 days, so I'm still waiting. And the worst of it is that they always get my "service tag" wrong. It's got an M in it, so it's understandable that they'd mistake it for an N, but I spell it out in the international phonetic alphabet every time. Jeez. I decided to just install Home, since they said I could keep the disks. I have Office Pro, anyway. Anyone know how to do an easy (translation: without data/program loss) upgrade? And yes, of course I finally found the Pro disk the day after I installed home, despite having been looking for it for 5-6 weeks at least.
Oh, and don't forget - you can't lodge a complaint through the phone system. You have to use their website. Smells like BS to me. How many people are going to take the time to do that extra step?
Erm... so you're saying we can't use it 'cuz it's too expensive, but SS1 is a waste? SS1 is developing new tech, new methods, and new ideas. It's a testbed for the stuff that'll make this safer, cheaper, and more useful - the stuff that'll lead to an ROI.
That's quite different. Our legal system, as you obviously know, is based off the British system. British common law (and other law) was "assumed" so we wouldn't have to start from scratch. Now, while German/international law can be used as "see, they think so" arguments, they don't have the same force as official precedent - British law before a certain period (I forget when) does.
How simple are those USB phones in terms of setup (in Linux)? I wouldn't mind paying for one, but as long as I can still use Asterix (or just POTS), Skype isn't compelling enough to mess around with.
And do they have a free trial? Say, 5 minutes to check sound quality, ease of use and all that?
Yeah, I know, easy questions. But as long as the site's/.'ed...
I believe it does direct connect, right? Only uses p2p to find the person you're looking for? ("Hey, have you seen $PERSON? No? Could you ask your buddies for me?")
As I understood it, these guys operated a "clean" Kazaa, and the malware only came in when Sharman Networks, or whatever it was called, took over. Am I misinformed?

Which is why you only send the subject ... or just "message #XYZ received". Duh! Read the post first.
So ... security by obscurity, then? I thought that was a bad thing?

Show off ;-) But at least I know what atlantoaxial sublaxation and genu valgus are!

Erm ... CDs are cheaper, work with legacy computers, etc. And since it's only ~180MB, why would you need the extra space of a DVD?
Maybe a Netscape 8.0 based on FireFox would have a better shot.

It isn't. That's the point. It's merely a nice gedanken. Note the mention in that definition of how the word has negative connotations.
Why not both? I'd pay extra.
For those who don't get it, this is a reference to the song "Alice's Restaurant Massacre" by Arlo Guthrie - google for the lyrics, they're hilarious.

Thank you, that was exactly what I was looking for.

Oh, right, it's p2p for a reason.

Cents. At least in Germany. Or "eurocent", if you're feeling formal.
Thus we would have a legal FLOSS .m3p player.
Yeah, but can it play ogg? How 'bout mp3?
