Recently finished the final book in the series. I won't give you any spoilers, but I will tell you this: don't take the story (and yourself) too seriously -- just enjoy the ride. Particularly in the final book, King really turns the Dark Tower concept of "reality" to a whole new level. Trust the story to take you where it will, even if you find yourself groaning or bemoaning a plot device or turn of events. It's all good.
There are some of us who can count on one hand the number of hours we've operated any kind of Apple/Mac. I've spent nearly all my days in environments EXCEPT Mac. DOS, Windows in all its forms, *nix, *bsd. Could I support my mom at ALL if she got a Mac? Nope. Not a whit. Of course, I wouldn't want to support any kind of *nix, despite my familiarity. Just sayin'.
Color me ignorant... I took some anthropology courses regarding primates and human evolution, but we didn't cover warfare. Can you tell me what "hammer and anvil" tactics are? Sure, I tried wiki but only found "Hammer Into Anvil", an episode of "The Prisoner" *shrugs*.
If one is writing "dick jokes",then by all means, call it a "dick".
I know your nick is "UnrefinedLayman", but to be taken seriously when discussing an elective medical procedure, isn't it more useful to your argument to be brave enough to say "penis"?
THANK YOU! (Someone please mod parent all the way up!)
After my son was born, I had concerns about thimerosol as a preservative in various vaccines. The way I looked at it, mercury is a known neurotoxin, and I'd rather not introduce it into his system if I could help it. I had concerns. I didn't know the differences between methyl mercury and ethyl mercury (nor do I know much more now as I'm not a chemist, but those articles were helpful).
Shockingly, my wife's OB didn't know squat about my questions, or even what thimerosol was. Our pediatrician, while very good with most everything, was likewise ignorant and somewhat dismissive of my concerns. I'm happy to read any scientific material to help me make my decision, and this stuff would have been a huge help. But in my state of ignorance (at the time), I went ahead with all the vaccines but crossed my fingers, the shadow of doubt far in the back of my mind.
Why can't OBs, GPs and Peds be more informed on this kind of stuff? Oi! I felt when I said the word "thimerosol" I was getting funny looks. I wondered if I knew more (albeit misinformed) than the doc on this topic, and found that alarming.
What if I replace the word TOR with the word "internet". Do you see why your post doesn't make sense?
If your only experience with Tor was having to clean up an exploited website, wouldn't your first reaction be, "Fuck you, Tor" ?
Bit torrent gets throttled because it is a bandwidth hog, not because its often used for copyright infringement. If that was the issue, it would be blocked totally in the places where it is throttled instead.
Bit torrent gets blocked when a network admin is annoyed with the side-effects: both bandwidth usage and one's cover-your-ass instinct.
What exactly is your point? Shit gets abused all the time.
My point is this: Tor is something used only by a small number of people (a guess). Network administrators and such might see Tor as something which provides them with no value, but great liability. Why, then, would they want to keep it around? It's not nearly as entrenched as e-mail (which certainly has its own problems). It's easy to see why they'd want to eliminate it.
Well, the fact is that TOR is also used by less-than-savory netizens.
Here's how I first found about TOR: A friend's website used a well-known (and well-exploited) forum app. As expected, it was exploited well. Going through logs for him, I traced the activity to a TOR node. From that moment, knowing nothing else about TOR (except its allegedly legitimate use as described by wikipedia), I'd have loved to simply deny any and all access to any requests originating from TOR nodes. First impression == bad! Just like a network admin narrows down bandwidth-abuse to Bit Torrent clients/ports.
Just as people cry and whine that Bit Torrent is very often used for legitimate purposes and shouldn't be controlled/throttled/discriminated against, there's also a significant portion of that kind of traffic which is dedicated to illegal activities of one kind or another. The creators of TOR couldn't have possibly missed this, and anyone who complains should remember that when you lie with dogs, you may wake with fleas. You're going to have to take the bad with the good.
I renewed my State DL a several months ago. I presented my expiring DL, and was given a signature card. I signed it once in the presence of a DMV worker (compared against my expiring DL), and assumed I was supposed to sign it a second time in the presence of the final DMV worker who would take my photo. I sat at a row of chairs for about 15min before I was called to get my photo taken and then my license issued. My photo was taken without EVER validating my signature again, or even asking for the signature card. I could have traded places with my hypothetical "illegal" friend. When my name was called, he could stand up, get his photo taken, and then walk away with a DL showing my info and his photo.
I couldn't believe it. Perhaps my expectations were too high that there might actually be some semblance of security when obtaining a state-licensed identification card.
My understanding is that after 9/11, the new Bud commercials changed "Real American Heroes" to "Real Men of Genius" to be a little more sensitive and not dilute the meaning of "hero". But this was a rumor I heard. Can anyone verify?
But we can also make some plastics from soy right now. I don't know how many kinds or whether this is currently feasible on a large scale. Nor am I suggesting it would summarily replace all petroleum-based plastics. Anyone know more about soy plastics?
Okay, well, thermite is some really fun stuff, but it's hardly an explosive. Damned hot molten iron, to be sure, but it's not going to go "ka-boom". Or do you know something I don't?
In Soviet Russia, hair grows you!
To be clear for other readers, it's spelled Gaia. There's a link if folks want to know more about the Gaia hypothesis.
We're with the government. We're here to help.

Anybody else's tinfoil hats giving you that tingling-feeling right about now?Hey! John Candy is dead. You should have said Chris Farley, instead.
What? oh... nevermind.

Q: Why do Scotsmen wear kilts?
A: Zippers scare the sheep.
Never attribute to malice what can equally be attributed to stupidity.
I see this as a corollary to Ockham's Razor.

Or a president with a very small dick
Let's leave North Korea out of this, hmm?
Also, a sincere search for truth must include at least some respect for other's ideas.

Go ahead and mod me down. I've got karma to burn.
"Optix", eh? A peeping tom? Got binoculars and telescopes in each room? PERVERT!
I need more coffee. I first read the headline as "Cheap, Safe, Pantiless..." and thought, "Hey, I'm in!"

Oh, aye. And you try and tell the young people of today that, and they won't believe you!
