  1. Re:A better wheel on Stroustrup on the Future of C++ · · Score: 3, Interesting

Because sometimes you want to write something quickly without having to worry about managing memory, pointers, etc. If you're writing an application where every clock cycle counts, then yes, use C or C++, but in most cases you can get away with a little bit more CPU usage with the benefit of code maintainability. I suppose if you really had a section of code where minimal CPU usage was important, you could write that in C++ and import it into Java as a native interface library.

  18. But seriously, folks... on Google Might Disappear in Five Years · · Score: 5, Interesting

I happen to think that given the two very different philosophies of these companies that Google is probably dominating the marketshare of talented developers. Google quite simply appeals more to the geek aesthetic of innovation and using technology to enhance people's lives. MS is all about hampering innovation and using devious business tactics to ensure that inferior technology always prospers. At least that's the general perception.

If you're one of the best software developers out there, who would you rather work for? Even if MS offers more money, it's hard to justify wanting to work for MS.

Gates has admitted in many interviews that the key to the success of Microsoft has always been in attracting the best minds to come work for them. Something tells me that is no longer the case and that is why the writing is on the wall for Microsoft.

  20. This seems like a good idea for these companies on OSS Projects Offer Bounties For Features · · Score: 2, Insightful

I always think about NetBeans and Eclipse and how they are both these OSS projects that are funded by large companies. Most of the code for these projects has been written by developers on the dole from either Sun or IBM. The question is, why should companies like IBM or Sun limit themselves to the pool of developers they have working in-house? I currently work as a developer 40+ hours a week, and while I have ideas for features to contribute and bugs I would like to see fixed in these products, I can't see programming outside of my job since the programming I do for work I get paid for. If Sun or IBM would sign a reasonable check for me to fix their products, I would be more likely to help them out.
