I'd use GAIM (http://gaim.sourceforge.net/) plus the following plugin...
Off-the-Record (OTR) Messaging allows you to have private (not just encrypted) conversations over instant messaging by providing: Encryption, Authentication, Deniability, and Perfect forward secrecy.

I see two problems here:
A lifetime of servitude cleaning up viri? Not a good idea.. They F#$ked it up, you think I'll trust them to fix it?
Laws: They all have borders. The Internet is borderless.
Just tighten up your ship and sail on, I'd say.
Whomever this anonymous reader is, he seems to be very short sighted. Marcus clearly lays blame on practically EVERYONE out there. What blame? Well, most of it is just plain dysfunctional behavior, practices, management, development, etc...
What I love about Marcus is that almost all his little nuggets of insight are blatantly true. And to add to his credibility, almost all of them are only gained through experience.
As security practicioners, let's not play to either "the sky is falling" or the blame game. It's time to look inward, step up and do the right thing instead of perpetuating the mistakes of the past two decades. But first, you need to learn a bit of history here and be technically up to the task such that you can fully understand and appreciate.
I've had a V500 for the past oh.. eight months.
The closest thing I could compare it to is... a Chow (dog). It runs forever (pair of batteries that came with mouse lasted 6 months). It wanders (the scroll bar BLOWS). And it seems to have been dropped on it's head at birth and developed a mind of it's own (the scroll bar BLOWS). You can forget about trying to get it to do what you want it to do (the scroll bar BLOWS).
On the good side, the USB dongle is very compact and fits neatly inside mouse for storage. It does not interfere with 802.11x or Bluetooth. Also, I've never had any disconnect issues with it like some older wireless accessories I've had from Logitech.
Aside from power consumption, I don't know why they didn't use bluetooth for this. When I originally purchased it, I did evaluate other bluetooth mice. In spite of havign to deal with the added dongle, the V500 came out a clear winner. Unlike the bluetooth ones, it never disconnects or needs to be connected (via bluetooth manager).
All in all, aside from the scroll bar (it BLOWS), this has been one absolutely sweet mouse for travel use with laptop.
First off, this was supposed to be a PILOT project. It was designed as such because there was a myriad of problems to be overcome.
The largest one was undoubtedly document/case info handling. I could just imagine the nightmares of the folks that were trying to design this one. Some folks here thought this was a free for all and that google search would do the job, not so. There are two concepts at work here- clearance level and need to know. Both work quite well at a human level. But at a computer level, automating these concepts are anything but easy to define, create, route, track, and enforce.
Big deal. They scrapped the project. But at least they learned a lot for the next project and are incorporating what they can. Hopefully, the next one will come close to what they were hoping for.
There are many firms out there that provide Disaster Recovery/Business Continuity services for continued remote network access services.
The good news is that they are very well developed with bandwidth available at all ranges. These folks may also be available for sponsorship of your outing (i.e. provide connectivity for free).
The bad news is that typically, these guys are NOT cheap. Nor are they generally inclined to do things for free (they're used to laying dormant until something huge hits the fan).
I am not providing any URLs as you will need to do the research based upon your geographic area (it was not specified).
The last time we piddled with the space shuttle to make items more human friendly (asbestos gaskets on the fuel tank), it blew up!
