The story itself mentioned Lawrence Livermore (a Dept. of Energy Lab, which I'll use as an example), which have SEVERAL of the fastest supercomputers in existance. Just what are they going to do with it? If they have a simulation to run, why would they bother running it on a machine like this when they have they own/manage their own supercomputers?

The only real benefit to a machine like this (as far as I can see), is to mid-sized engineering firms. Even then, they would be reluctant to drop $10k on a single computer, let alone the staff required to manage it(and port software utilities to it).

With the power requirements on this thing, the case will be half PSU. I can see the warning on the case now 'Do not place in carpeted areas.' I bet the electro-static discharge would make you sterile faster than the speed of rubbing socks.

What if a person with one of these suddenly passes out? I can already see the horror stories about EMTs using a defibrilator(sp?) on someone simply because they couldn't find a pulse.

  6. Wife just had it 1 week ago on Experiences with Laser Eye Surgery? · · Score: 1
My wife had this done last Friday, and I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised with the results.

The surgery itself took less than five minutes, and she was seeing better as soon as she got off the table. After four days, in a follow up appointment, it was determined that she had gone from having 20/50 (off the top of my head) to 20/20.

The basic surgery goes like this:
    • After numbing the patient's eyes, an incision is cut along the outer tissue of the eye immediately outside of the pupil.
    • After folding back the tissue, exposing the pupil, the laser is fired into the patient's eye, removing corneal (sp?) tissue, which takes about 30 seconds per eye.
    • The tissue covering the eye is put back into place using what I can only describe as a micro-squeegy.
Depending on how much tissue is removed, it can take anywhere from 3 days to 2 weeks to heal from the procedure. Until healed, you could experience problems with glare coming from headlights, florescent lighting, monitors, etc.., but sunglasses quickly solve any light-sensitivity you may experience. As far as recommending it, though, I'd say if you have to wear the proverbial 'Birth Control Glasses', go for it. After all, if wearing glasses or contacts corrects vision adequately, why mess around with your sight?

The risks are a bit high, though, but our experience has been nothing but positive. If you want more info, go here.

Unfortunatly, it's not the price of the unit that really matters. What will really turn normal consumers off is the fact that it's a Linux PDA. With the desktop market having been spoon-fed Microsoft products, only technophiles will even consider purchasing it.
