    sadly, yes. even if they do not identify themselves as law enforcement.

    such as with the case of Kathryn Johnston, and i also believe there is a similar case (can't seem to get info on it, due to ITs filters) where another person was tried (and convicted!) of 1st degree murder (though a new trial was ordered on appeal. don't know what the result was or if the trial is still in progress). the screwy thing is, if i'm remembering the case correctly, was that they weren't even after that person. they had a warrant for the apartment next door (and found the guy they were looking for) and decided the check this other person's apartment for some reason.

    i do think that there are legitimate reason for no-knock warrants, but i really think that they are being over-used and that the general population

    on all the hard drives i've seen, there is a small hole in the casing with a very fine filter on it.

    air is what keeps the read/write head floating above the platter. the spinning of the platter creates a small cusion of air that the head rests on.

    one major problem i would think with a submerged hard drive would be friction, as the oil would be much denser than air.

    IIRC, it would require about 3kW (i think modern ACs have about 3:1 power:cooling ratio), which isn't 10kW, but is still quite considerable.

    Given that these buggers usually have abilities like "download updates" why doesn't someone hack the bot networks and download an uninstall+patch program?

    i believe that did happen sometime. the problem is, it's legally risky and opens then up to lawsuits/criminal charges.

    A step in the right direction would be to kill copyright monopolies entirely.

    i personally think that killing copyright entirely would be a very bad idea. things such as the GPL and creative commons licencing (not 100% sure on the latter) rely on copyright law, so killing copyright would kill those too.

    that said, the copyright term needs to be cutdown significantly, such as back to the original term (7 years and the option for a one-time 7 year extension, for a maximum of 14 years), which i feel is a completely reasonable length of time to make your money.

    How does not sharing MS File/Sharing specs harm competition again?

    lack of interoperability, otherwise known as the tactic "vendor lock-in".

    whether we like it or not, windows is currently the standard and if someone wants to compete (which lets that whole "free market" thing work), they need to be compatible with windows and with microsoft's formats (.doc, etc.)

    It's not like that light is ever going to be turned off, so wtf is the purpose of it?

    because some people need to be beat over the head with a hint. I've seen some particularly clue-repellent people try to light up right in the cabin, completely oblivious to the sign and then getting pissed off when the flight attendant told them to put it out or leave the plane.

    Little features like the lack of a built in speaker means that the iPod will never be used to offend others by thoughtlessly playing loud music and imparting an unconscious societal feeling of contempt for the device

    you evidently haven't heard how loudly some people play them. i can often hear them clearly from 3 or 4 seats back on a bus.

    the hearing aid market is going to be absolutely booming in 10 or 20 years.

    If I do it the way I want to do it, I get a lower grade and people get bored and lose interest in the presentation.

    my emphsis states exactly why your method is wrong.

    if people are losing interest in your presentation, either you're presenting on a hopelessly mind-numbingly boring topic, your presentation is too long, or you're doing it wrong.

    you don't put all the information on the slides. the slides are there as a point-form summery and as a place to hold relevant graphics. you expand on the points with what you're saying rather than just regurgitating what you've got on the screen.

    we've been doing this sort of stuff in my technical communications class for the past semester and a half.

    no. go read their site. this is a wireless internet connection for your laptop, and it is advertized as being an alternative to landline broadband.

    Good luck playing online games over a wireless connection, your ping time will be way too high for that.

    wireless, not satalite. there is a differance. wireless goes to transmission towers (similar to cell towers) on the ground, which are much closer than a satalite in geosyncious orbit.

    You should be able to disable this feature. Not all locations even practice DST, Arizona and Hawaii don't.

    same with Saskatchewan and anything that automatically changes my time around annoys me to no end.

    If the PC can run Vista (Aero is not Vista), then it can say it's Vista capable. What's wrong with that?

    possibly the fact that every vista ad i've seen is touting the brand-new and shiny Aero interface.

    1. what percentage of the average joe is gonna want to turn to the 2k interface?

    2. unless you are not connected to the internet or do extremely little on the internet, antivirus is required for windows.

    3. you're comparing a stripped-down vista to XP loaded with AV, firefox, and fancy themes.

    However, I definitely agree that there needs to be a similar contest in making a mass produced, easily charged electric car/etc.

    i believe that the current problem is with batteries. we have ones that will charge fast, we have ones that hold lots of power, but we don't yet have one with both. we need a battery that will charge in roughly the time it takes to gas up your car and will have comparable endurance.

    perhaps really big (megaFarad-size) capacitors might be the solution, though the energy density on them tends to suck at present, which hampers the endurance part.

    oh yes. i really wish that someone would import those kei cars to this continent, especially the Mitsubishi i or the Subaru R1. I'd be camping outside the dealership to get one of those. one thing the Japanese are very good at is building things small and good.

    Sure, but how big would you imagine the market for cars that cost a few million bucks?

    how much of those millions is engine, transmission, suspension, tires, etc. ?

    all of those could be substantially toned down for a consumer vehicle.

    while the CF body might be expensive now, advances in manufacturing techniques and the efficiency of mass production could bring the costs within the consumer range within the decade.

    volkswagen already did more than double this with their 1-litre car (100km on 1 litre of gas. that's a little more than 235 miles per gallon).

    i imagine we can do a little better given that this was created nearly 5 years ago.

    So if I understand correctly, all blood can be made into type O, which anyone except O- will be able to use? Those of us with O- will still require only O-.

    if I'm understanding correctly, it makes any + type into O+ and any - type into O-, so O- will just need any negative type.

    though this isn't counting the sackful of other compatibility factors (there are 29 currently recognized), so this is not an end-all-be-all solution.

    at my clinic, they have an extensive list of practically every medication that exists and if it invalidates a donor. it's a big 3" 3-ring binder.

    for common stuff, ibuprofen, acetaminophen, ASA, it has to be 3 days since you've taken them.

    any medication that it specifically blood-borne (blood pressure, cholesterol medications, etc.) are automatic ineligibility.

    anything that has a pregnancy category other than A or B is automatic ineligibility as well.

    up here in Canada, you can find out the information about any particular drug by calling them at their toll-free number (1-888-2-DONATE). i imagine that the US Red Cross has something similar.

    already sold. I've been donating regularly for a bit more than 2 years now. and I'm pretty useful, as I'm the semi-universal type (O+).

    though i do think that their exclusion criteria need adjustment. i have not seen any relevant evidence that being homosexual creates any statistically significant increase in the risk of contracting AIDS or any other blood-transmittable STD and they're excluding a moderate number of donors from the pool. the "travel to Britain" part also strikes me as silly, as we have BSE here too.

    they also might want to look through their exclusion lists and allow those with proven false positives to donate again. my aunt got a false positive on the hep c test nearly 15 years ago, and all further tests have repeatedly shown as negative, but she is unable to donate due to that one aberration.
