one of the instructors at my collage has been doing something similar for the past 3 months or so. every lecture is posted in both video/video and pure audio (for the dial up users among us).

it's very handy when i have to miss a class, as i can just get the video and find out what happened that day.

That's what the ESRB ratings were supposed to be. Unfortunately, unlike movie theaters, videogames get sold anywhere and everywhere and their sellers aren't that smart. It gets even worse when stores like Walmart get involved and now you have checkout clerks in the garden center who know and care absolutely nothing about avoiding imposed legislation for the industry.

i have never managed to find a store (big box or mom&pop) that will sell someone an M-rated game without checking ID (unless they "appear over 30", which is the standard for alcohol/tobacco sales.) and AFAIK, there is no law regarding it. it's story/company policy and it seems to be working just fine.

Can a school legally (or morally) get away with punishing a student for an action committed outside of school grounds if the action isn't illegal in the first place? Wouldn't it be better to seek legal action and then the school take action based on whether there is a conviction or not?

i belive that they're trying to deal with things at the lowest level possible and not screw someones life with criminal charges.

and i'm pretty sure said acts are illegal in the adult world, under libel/slander laws and labour laws (workplace harrasment).

It most certainly did. Very clearly and in simple words. "Shall pass no law." Libel and slander laws are unconstitutional, it's just that most people don't mind.

up here, in Canada, where this is happening, it is perfectly constitutional, under section 1 of our constitution, the "Reasonable Limitations" statute.

and personally, i agree with this law. it is functionally equivalent to workplace harassment laws. this is just allowing the school to deal with it, keeping matters at the lowest level possible, which is a good thing.

IIRC from a previous story on this, the patent covers an IP-to-PSTN (normal phone service) bridge, which is a vital part of any VOIP service that allows you to place calls to normal telephones and not just VOIP phones in the same network.

there is simply no way around this, as that single item is the thing that allows VOIP to work in the intended manner.

this applies to ALL VOIP providers, not just vonage, that allow you to call outside of their network. they would all use the exact same technology and verizon has them all over a barrel.

The next point is that firefights are generally won by who pulls out the gun first... and that would be the person interested in shooting someone.

which leads to the point that one is never enough. if you've got one guy planning on doing a killing spree, and you've got 2 or more guys carrying concealed weapons, here's a picture.

    1. nut walks into a room and draws a gun, possibly getting off a shot before being noticed
    2. carriers 1, 2...n notice and start to draw their weapons
    3. nut opens fire or continues firing
    4. unless nut is using something with fast full-auto capability, heavy stopping power, and a very large magazine, it's pretty unlikely he will be able to take out all of the carriers before one or more of them get shots off, likely ending things. the chances of this happening increase the more carriers there are.

they do increase the likelihood that someone gets shot, typically the nut shooting at people.

granted, with an arbitrary number of guns being fired, there is a chance of someone catching friendly fire (this can be largely mitigated with training, which i believe is already required for a CCW license in most, if not all, states) or getting hit with a ricochet, though I'm pretty sure that the odds of the latter are pretty long.

AFAICT, it'll simply dump whatever is being worked on, (same as if you killed it in the task manager or by the "end now" button in the dialog that comes up), losing any unsaved changes to the currently open file(s).

worst case would be if the program is forced to terminate while it is writing to a file, which would corrupt it, which is the reason why i like to increase the timetokill wait to give me an extra margin of safety.

though since you're shutting down, you've likely already closed any non-background programs, so the risk is absolutely marginal at best.

Disclaimer: This is a stupid idea that will probably set your house on fire, ruin your crops, and send famine and pestilence across the land. Your mileage will vary. I'm probably lying. You have been warned.
