Well, before we all start knocking politicans for being poltically and technically inept, let's at least give them some credit for trying (/ducks:) )
Seriously, if we/.-ers got together and found some sort of solid canidate for an office, we could have something very powerful. A politican that actually gives a sh!t about technology and the rights of the people online, etc.
We could give a government homepage for this canidate the real/. effect....SLASHDOT UNITE!
atall? When a good percentage (can't find the stat when I need it, of course:) ) of the spam comes out of the United States, why the hell does Spamhaus look to the Chinese for help...We ought to start hunting down those the homegrown idiots like Scott Richter before we solicit help internationally....
When I said "linux", I meant Mozilla, something that is less likely for her to be able to have blah program install either a) without her knowledge or b) with her knowledge, but will probably not work anyway....
I think the biggest problem in making an update cd or instructions on how to update their computer is not getting the right programs together - it's getting them to properly use and learn how to be on top of security issues.
Case in point- I return home for the semester break, and my sister's pc is riddled with spyware, malware, you name it. The thing is no longer functional, so I had to format the hard drive, yadda yaddda yadda...I gave her a full lesson, and made sure she knew exactly what to do. Yet a month later, the computer was back in the crapper again...She stated that she lost all of the programs she liked when I fixed her computer-
That's the problem...Unless I boot linux and pull the internet from the back of the machine, her pc will never be secure...No matter how many times you teach/tell someone about computers and online security, for most noobs or non-users, it just doesn't seem to click...
As far as issues with Windows Update...Best bet is to download from someone else's high-speed pc. I had a similar incident with SoBIG and a reinstallation of XP.
Our neighbors across the pond might actually have a good idea for once:)...
If the WIPO can get a standard software patent system across both sides (US and Euro), preferrably like the Europeans, we might not be reading Slashdot headlines every morning that read "Apple Patents the English Language!", etc. The US Patent system is dated, and needs change, especially when such patents can be made and there is such a high backlog of patents...Time shall tell, but this may be the first step in getting software/IP patents sorted out
Well, my experiences with SuSE are good...SuSE is the first Linux OS I've run thus far, and I'm a better man for it.:) The only problems I've really had are with the ATI Radeon 9000 in my laptop (yes, ATI's own closed-source drivers are cr4p...stupid video card won't work like it should)...I had a hell of a time getting Fedora Core (any version) onto my Dell 600m, so I tried SuSE and it worked beautifully. Definitely go with Linuxant if you want wireless, it is worth the $20, as wireless is also hard to get working in SuSE.
Yeah...riight...How long have we been waiting for DOOM III and other such sequels such as Duke Nukem, etc. You would think companies such as iD would have some sort of vested interest in actually putting these games quickly to market. In the meantime, I won't hold my breath for any of this vaporware....
I'm better off playing MAME on my linux box anyway...:)
Windows on clusters....Sounds like a clusterfsck to me :)

I probably should have previewed that... :)
