  1. Hmmm.... on Pedagogical Bundle Lets You Pay What You Want For Educational Software · · Score: 5, Interesting

    - Implies an affiliation with the humble bundles, but has none
    - All of the software is from the same developer
    - The options for where to send the money are 1. the developers, 2. a non-profit organization run by the developers, or 3. the bundle website, also run by the developers
    - The software looks really terrible
    - If it's GPL, where is the link for the free distribution of the source code?

  2. $30-99? Grado SR-60s on Headphones in Corporate Culture? · · Score: 5, Informative

Grado SR-60s are the way to go for your requirements. They are, hands down, the best headphones available under $100. The only drawback is that they are open stage, so you can hear sounds around you, which is not so good for a metro or bus ride. But it sounds like that's an advantage rather than a drawback in your case. SR-60s will run you about $80 USD shipped. Oh, and don't succumb to the temptation to get the SR-80s just because they've got a higher model number. The 60s are far better for non-amp-driven listening.

  3. BBS door games on Are Older Games More Satisfying? · · Score: 1

Anybody remember the old door game Iron Ox? It was truly great. But sadly, it only ran on OS/2-based bbs-serving software, so it was never as widespread as Pimp Wars or L.O.R.D. Great, in-depth gameplay, team dynamics, and much else. And the RIP graphics were pretty decent-looking too.

  4. 4AD records: an excellent model on When Would You Accept DRM? · · Score: 1

I definitely don't agree with the people here who are against DRM for rental of content, but that's neither here nor there. The purpose of this post is to point out a company that's selling unrestricted, un-DRM'd mp3s and making money off it. If you go to www.4ad.com you'll see that they have a wide selection of digital-only EPs available for download for 3 british pounds, and you can pay by text messaging over your mobile. 4AD is not a tiny, fringe company. Hell, they released the pixies' albums in the 90s, and they've got some great stuff. I just bought the Mountain Goats' Dilaudid ep and am very happy with it. All that said, the reason their model works so well is that they sell these eps in digital format only, and a lot of them act partially as previews to forthcoming albums. You could get on a high horse and say that these are glorified ads that you're forced to pay for, but I don't think so. And I'm one consumer who has chosen to support both music and artists that i really love, and a content distribution model that I believe in.

  5. Anyone checked out SP2 RC1? on Microsoft Allows Pirates to Install XP SP2 · · Score: 3, Interesting

There's an English version and a German version, but the english is 13 megs heavier. Anyone know why? Perhaps some nasty little bit of snoopware they know they couldn't get away with in Germany?
