I would argue that water does not have multiple phases. H2O has multiple phases; water being one of them. Steam is also not a phase of water, it is the gas phase of H2O.
As for whether the Pope is Catholic or not, I suppose it depends on who you ask. Some Catholics may not agree with his interpretation of the bible, that he is not upholding God's will. They might say that he is not a true Catholic.
That being said, I'm not Catholic, so that might all be BS.
