Here's an idea. When I'm trying to feed my family, I don't have to worry about money because the stuff can't be owned.
As nice as the world might be if food was free and software had no patents, that isn't the world we live in. And no amount of wishful thinking on slashdot is going to change it. If you want to get rid of software patents, start saving up to buy a politician. Or find one that can't be bought. But I'd say option 1 is more realistic.
specific instances where employees are aware that copyrighted materials were being posted and not only did absolutely nothing, they were laughing about it.
And yet we praise the Pirate Bay for doing exactly the same thing.
The entire medical chain makes billions off of donations.
Off organ donations? I'm going to need a citation for that, because if hospitals, or worse, doctors are getting paid for organ donations (beyond the time required to take out the organs or put them inside someone of course) then America's even more fucked up then I thought.
Organ donation is a relatively new concept. The first successful kidney transplant was in the 1950s (with everything before then a bit touch and go) and only worked because it involved identical twins.
I do think that with such changes it is important to give society to come to understand and accept these changes and advances. America is currently up in arms over socialised medical insurance that is opt-out. It seems a bit unreasonable IMO to expect the same people to accept opt-out organ transplants.
This isn't a mere throwaway line though. Answer the question: Do you allow someone to force an incompetent person to forgo life saving medical procedures?
There are plenty of mormons (or is it Jehovas Witnesses?) who would disagree when it comes to blood transfusions. I'd hardly say the same people are about to blow themselves up in a terrorist attack.
But hey, at least you'll get modded up by the anti-religious types who come here.
An atheist who respects other people's ability to have different beliefs.
I only ever go to the bank when I'm about to go to on an overseas trip... except I didn't this last trip I went on. Hmmm... I think its been 5 years since I've been to a bank actually.
WTF are you Americans doing going to the bank so often?
If my boss wants to buy this phone, great. They've just given me a big neon flashing sign warning me that they're a control freak. I can now either move to a different department or start looking for a new job.
I'd rather have obvious signs I can't miss that my boss likes to create a hostile work environment, rather than subtle signs I might miss at first. The more blatant they are, the better.
Wait, I'm assuming we're talking a 256 character long password. Because I'd sure love to see someone memorise a string of 1 and 0 that is 256 digits long.
You don't think someone, given enough time, would be able to brute-force your password? The use of Never in zeppepcs post would imply he means literally NEVER. Not "in a reasonable amount of time" or "within a timeframe that the information stored is still valuable" but NEVER IN ALL TIME!!!
Right, but I feel its safe to say LynnWood was implying that Linux is well known for everything "just working" which it isn't. Its well known for "not working until a kid or someone with a computer degree fixes it."
It might work perfectly fine for someone who installs it without knowing anything about Linux. But that isn't the default case. Whereas with Apple everything is suppose to "just work" without any hassles or changes.
said about Linux? The biggest problem with Linux is it doesn't "just work". It in fact often "doesn't work" unless you go hunting for patches (which are almost always third party) and install them and all sorts of other stuff just to get stuff to work halfway decently. Linux only "just works" if you've gotten someone else to either vet the hardware and specific models or set up the computer themselves. And then it stops "just working" whenever you want to install any new applications that aren't completely mainstream within the community for that distro.
With that option on the table, buying games is silly and even considering doing the console thing is absurd.
Some people actually like to support the people who produce entertainment they find entertaining. I know its a shocking concept thanks to today's "me, me, me" generation. But people who have morals do still exist.
Indeed. People bitch and moan about how awful it is that shows like Firefly get cancelled, and then they turn around and illegally download the shows. If you aint willing to put money into a product, don't whine about it. With all the amazing entertainment being created on a weekly basis, there is heaps available that fits your tastes and requirements (e.g. If you require there be no DRM, there's plenty of quality entertainment available that lacks DRM).
Yes. His best to destroy the space travel in America. Duh!

We should placate the whiners by ending all progress in space travel.
Obama's doing his best. But one man can only do so much.
Everything you've done with your wife is something your little is likely do at least once. And then some.
It was also a complete rip-off of Fern Gully. It had even less changes then Pocahontas requires.

China respects no "intellectual" property, whatsoever.
Sounds like the average slashdotter to me. After all, pirating is perfectly A-OK.
At Slashdot, "citation needed" is one of the many memes used by its commenters.

This is the kind of stuff Jesus was criticizing in the bible
Jewish people aren't exactly well known for following the teachings of Christ.

If your version of Linux doesn't work on your hardware, simply try a different distro.
This hardly epitomises the "Just Works" philosphy that GF678 was attempting to attach to Linux.
My post wasn't to bag out Linux. It was to say that it doesn't have a reputation of "just working."
Funny, I was using Linux only a few years ago (a few being 2-4). But I guess facts don't matter when you're trolling.

It varies from person to person like EVERYTHING.

It just works.

I almost never turn on my speakers and yet I find the internet quite accessible.
I'm not saying this isn't a great development. But to try to portray the internet as inaccessible to the deaf before now is ridiculous.
