Yeah.. I've just put together a new gaming machine, and haven't had the chance to re-play any of my newer games in all of their fully anti-aliased high detail textured quality......all because of The Sims 2. The problem is, she doesen't just like to design a cool house, she actually plays the game. This is something I just can't understand, well, unless my family consists of a couple hot lesbians.
As far as I knew, the whole Chinese censorship thing wasn't about money.
My understanding (which may be wrong, correct me if I am) was that Google was attempting to pre-censor some news stories for the Chinese, so that China wouldn't block the site completely.
It was a choice between leaving out some stories, or having China block the entire site.
Maybe it was the wrong choice, but the reasons behind it didn't seem all that sinister.
The campers paradice thing really depends on the level design.. the Doom3 levels didn't really lend themselves to any sniping or sneaking, the gameplay was more like UT03 but not as good.
While some people really dig spastic hyperactive gameplay (ADHD?), I prefer slow and stelathy. I don't camp, but I do get a lot of satisfaction from taking someone's head off from across the map, especially when playing on a lan when you can hear someone scream upstairs. The reaction from your friends is the best part of multiplayer.
No, but I'm not sure that it matters which changes were DA's ideas. I mean, it might matter if you're looking for something to complain about.. but imagine what it would be like to just suspend belief and watch the movie without trying really hard to find things to pick at.
I don't think anyone on Slashdot ever actually enjoys a movie.
What a bunch of grumpy nerds.
It was trashed. At the time, it was a brand new version of either DRM or the WMV format, I don't remember which, but I tried a dozen ways to get around it and wasn't successful. She ended up having to re-rip her entire CD collection again.
The thing is, the DRM was enabled by default, and she didn't know what it was, so she left it alone. Likewise, she didn't know that there is a feature to backup her licenses for the music.
That was happened to a friend when she moved all of her music in WMV format to her new computer, and then got rid of the old one. All of the CDs she had ripped were using DRM by default, and the second she tried to play a song on her new computer, Windows Media Player went through every song one after another and marked them as not having a valid license. She shouted many four letter words about Microsoft... and after her tantrum, I showed her how to rip her CDs and encode them in a better format.
Yep, we got the CISNET at Staples. It included MS Works (yeah, I know, whoop-dee-doo)
I realize it was a risk buying a bottom-of-the-barrel computer... but we took it, and haven't been dissapointed yet. Only time will tell if that changes.
No, I know that I like OSX better than Windows XP. But that's not the point. The point is, if you need a cheap computer, and can make due with WinXP, then you can't beat the price of PC hardware.
Yes, you can argue about the quality of the hardware, or the quality of the OS, but it's irrelevant to most people.
I'm sorry but that is a troll. What kind of pre-built machine are you seriously going to get for 450 USD? A 15inch LCD? Why would you want to artificially limit your workspace like that? Why not get a decent 19inch CRT like an LG instead?
My $470USD Cisnet (yeah, funky brand) machine machine came with a 17" Phillips CRT.
Does that 450USD system have onboard or dedicated gfx?
on-board graphics, like the mac mini.
Does it use shared ram or dedicated VRam?
Shared, but the computer is only used for 2D apps, and with 512mb of system ram, it has plenty to share.
Does it include any software similar to iLife?
No, but that's not what the computer is used for.
Does it include Windows XP Pro?
No, it includes Windows XP Home, which is fine, because I don't need to do Remote Assitance, or put the computer on a network with a Domain, or the 6 or 7 other things specific to Windows XP Pro.
Does it include a DVD-Combo drive?
Yes, but it'll be used for burning backups, not making DVDs.
Does it include CD Burning software?
Yes, a copy of Nero 6.something
Does it include a USB Keyboard with USB ports?
No, it came with a PS/2 Keyboard and Mouse, leaving the motherboard with 4 unused USB ports.
Does it include Firewire ports?
Just 1, but I don't have any firewire devices.. USB 2.0 works fine for me.

I just bought a $470 computer from Staples for my mom's shop.
It's got 512MB ram, a 2.8ghz Celeron, 80gb HD, Windows XP Home, an 8x DVD RW drive, 8-in-1 card reader, monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers.
None of it is exceptionally high quality stuff, but it's a quick machine and it does everything she needs it to. No, it's not as slick and cool as a Mac, but slick and cool were not her top priority, price was.
I'm with you on the Country music = spit bile and kill.. but that remains the same all day long for me.
I used to tune my alarm to the country station.. it was just about the only thing that would make me leap out of bed and turn off the alarm, too disgusted to even consider going back to sleep; it's just too hard on the nerves for long term use.
I never have trouble going to sleep, no matter what time it is. My girlfriend gets annoyed because I put my head on the pillow, and am asleep before 60 seconds is up.. she'll nudge me to be a pain in the ass (she can tell when I fall asleep because I start breating more deeply) and I'll tell her that what I was dreaming about.. it always feels like I've been dreaming for half an hour even though I only put my head on the pillow 2 minutes ago.
She mostly gets annoyed because she lays awake staring at the ceiling for an hour before she can fall asleep.
I do, however, have a terrible time waking up.. I might try your caffeine pill trick.

The bottleneck might be the system, but it's because the engine dosn't scale very well.
The campers paradice thing really depends on the level design.. the Doom3 levels didn't really lend themselves to any sniping or sneaking, the gameplay was more like UT03 but not as good.

Idunno, I'm too lazy to sign up for an account.

Yes, the company I used to work for publishes a top ten list ever year of interesting/quirky/strange Sales Tax laws.

Here is last year's:

I don't mind the notion of ISPs enforcing rules against hogging bandwidth to run a server, especially when they're hogging mine.
So, again, WTF is he talking about?
Well he's not talking about AMD at all, really. He's talking about the quality of nVidia's nF4 SLI chipset/drivers.
This has already been said a hundred times, so either I don't understand the point you're trying to make, or you don't understand this:
If you don't think you can make money using the GPL.. then don't use the GPL. I don't understand what you could possibly complain about.
Just because it doesn't work for your needs doesn't make it useless.
Not if they're ALL bogus
Am I the only one who think she has a horse face?

I've got a Dell laptop with one stuck pixel.. it's always red.
It doesn't usually bother me; I usually only see it when the screen is black or really dark.
It's on the very last line of pixels at the bottom of the screen, and very close to the right edge.
It would probably bother me more if the funky pixel was somewhere on the screen that wasn't occupied by a task bar 98% of the time.

Sorry, it looks like the mini doesn't use onboard graphics... It's got a Radeon 9200. I just assumed it used on-board video because of the small size.

Geek girls and pillow fights.. that's awesome.
Time to break out photoshop...

Better living through chemistry, indeed.
