Naval Dolphin Trainer 1: Hey, dude?

    Naval Dolphin Trainer 2: Yeah?

Naval Dolphin Trainer 1: The mother of all hurricanes is about to come down on us.

    Naval Dolphin Trainer 2: So?

Naval Dolphin Trainer 1: You think we should strap-up our dolphins with a full rack of poison dart guns right about now?

Naval Dolphin Trainer 2: Hey dude! Good idea! *goes off to the munitions locker*

Now I know the military can be stupid sometimes, but surely not stupid enough to have their trained killer dolphins armed up during an incoming major hurricane?

    Seriously?

  2. its not just the constitutional issues here.... on New California Law Bans Anonymous Media File Sharing · · Score: 3, Interesting

but what about the legality of identifying someone using an email address? A signature is a legally accepted way of stating acceptance of exchange of something (such as contracts). So how can a law demand you provide your name and email be upheld unless the email is considered an appropriate form of digital signature. So I spoof my IP address, use someone elses name and email and then what? My email address is NOT a valid identification of myself in ANY internet transaction. It only identifies someone who has access to an email account of some sort. I agree, this may be some sort of salami tactic for getting in a law for later ammendment, but the mistake was using bad meat the salami in the first place.

  3. Reality check, please. on Security-Updated Versions Of Mozilla Released · · Score: 5, Insightful
Firefox is still pre-version 1.0 at the moment, so people should be expecting these sort of updates.

Prior to 0.9, Firefox was only being updated ever few weeks, with each release holding many fixes since the last release. I think the increase in releases has mainly been due to the fact that in the last month or so the user base of Firefox has gone up dramatically.

I am sure this has put a lot more stress on the Firefox dev team because now people are starting to rely on their browser to be as good as IE and with whole organisations now looking at using Firefox over IE, the pressure must really be on to make sure it lives up to expectations.

Once Firefox hits version 1.0, people will get real shitty if it has bugs and security flaws, so the more they fix during 0.9.+ the better. Until then, I am happy to keep downloading it, daily if needed.

For me, I was hoping NWN2 would ditch the existing graphics engine completely and start over with proper 3d engine, and provide much better persistant world capabilities.I somehow dont think I am going to get that this time around.

NWN's true success today is its development into the persistant world arena. For the first time game players were given a game that allowed them to create their own game world. NWN is still running strong today because of the persistant worlds that are created by people who wanted something more imaginative and evolving than pretty much all the commercial MORGs out there.

Personally, if someone wants to make an aweful lot of money and become a legendary name in the gaming community, develop a game with serious persistant world capabilities using a proper 3d graphics engine for full first person emersion.

if I install Linux on my new cow-drive PC and it turns out that the cow used to make it had mad cows disease? Will my PC start thinking its a WinXP box?

And if my PC's cooling system claps out, thus frying my PC innards, does that mean my cow-drive will turn out 'well done' or just 'medium rare'?

Will my cow-drive regurgitate data like cud, thus displaying the porn I downloaded last night to my girlfriend when she uses it at awkward moments?

Will MacDonalds one day allow me to insert an all-beef patty into my cow-drive caddy and play Ronald's latest promotional game, before I ultimately eject it and consume it?

These are the important questions here!

But that just highlights the usual quality lifecycle for any new product on the market:

Version 1: good build but has numerous manufacturing faults

Version 2: solid build, less manufacturing faults, more features

Version 3: built like a tank, quality manufacturing, buckets of features

Version 4: good build, ok manufacturing, buckets of features

Version 5 and on: made of plastic, ok manufacturing, you pay more for the features

This version cycle applies to most manufactured goods. By the time you get to Version 4 of a such a product, everyone has them, so sales volumes start dropping. So the company starts making less durable versions of their products or try and keep the new features rolling out.

It is not in any company's interest to make a product that lasts forever. The concept of planne obsolescence keeps the economy going round and round.

  8. Of course..... on RFID Implants for Spanish Revelers · · Score: 1

Ever actually try and buy a drink in a crowded night club? Its 3 people deep and can take anywhere up to 15 minutes before a bartender actually pays me any attention. With RFID, I could have been charged for 3 drinks while I am standing there waiting to be served and I wouldnt know about it - why would I? I am too busy trying to 'casually' bump up against the chicky babe in the short black dress in front of me. With cash, the drink goes into the hands with the money. With RFID, the drink goes into someone's hands, and anyone nearby could be paying for it. Hell, why do I even need an RFID inplant here? I just rock up to the bar and pretend. The poor sap next to me can pay for it. He'd never know, the bartender would never know, and I get to drink for free all night.
