In phones that is true. Where I can see this being implemented is in DSLR and other cameras that need that high speed and high capacit and they will still be exchanged all the time.
And they already have cards they use only for their cameras. So buying a new camera could mean buying new cards with the disadvantage that they can't be used in your older camera.
is that an American thing? Because if they asked that where I live (Belgium) I would laugh at them, point them to the law that this is illegal and laugh again.
Well, I first would ask if they could put it in writing, so I could do whatever I want and if I get fired use that as proof that they fired me because I did not want to help with doing something illegal.
I then would keep laughing.
The strictest I have seen is that people are asked to refrain from giving personal opinion about the company as that would be seen as an official statement and that could lead to termination of contract. And the wording was even not that it was forbidden, but just that unofficial anouncements could lead to termination.
Why that phrasing? Because they can not tell you what to do in your free time.
And if a company is allowed to do such a thing and even could fire you if you refuse does not mean you have a choice. It is the same 'choice' you have when the Mafia comes to negotiate your new insurance. Sure, you have a choice, but not really.
They ignored the information about the dangers of soft drugs. They also ignored the information about Iraq. They ignored the advice not to invade Iraq. From what we see they have been following the USofA like a blind puppy. And that is why the majority of Europe does not really care and are even happy about Brexit. We would LOVE to exchange them for Canada.
What people *actually* want are revolutionary new concepts that cut the cost of air travel.
and time. Do not forget time. And travel is only part of the time. When I look at travel, I look not only at the time in the car, train or plane, but I look door to door. I look at when I leave my house to when I get where I want to be and that is not JFK or LAX or BRU. That is my home or my work or my hotel.
Soon I am traveling inside Europe and eqch time I go somezhere I look at those times. Sometimes trains win, sometimes planes win and if it is a draw, I take the train. Why? Because of the extra time I need to waste at the airport and getting to and from the airport.
e.g. Flight Brussels Hambug is 1h15. Time I need to be there before the flight: 2 hours. Time to get to the station and to the airport 30 minutes. From the airport to city center to the hotel Say 45 minuts. Being lenient on all times that is a total of 4.5 hours. Price 300EUR
With the train 6.5 And if there is a serious delay with the train, I take the next one. And I have much more space and what not. Price 100EUR
For me the winner is the train
OTOH a trip to my parents in Spain by train would take 24 hours and by plane 4.5 hours flight (including stopover) + 3.5 hours is 8. Winner: planes (at 200EUR)
Here is what I propose. They give me the money intended to rebuild the airtravel industry and I don't kill 561 people. That way they have reduced the number of people killed by more than 100%.
If they give me more, I won't kill even more people.
So they are now looking for replacement of those people, right?
Because where I work if I would do that I would get fired on the spot with no rights to any unemployment benefits as it would be looked at as a serious offence similar to theft or fraude.
Here how that went down with an ex-cow orker: Was asked into the office to explain what he did and why. This was his one and only chance to defend himself in the company. Answer was not satisfactory, so IT manager got the 'go' to press the button and remove all his access. Security guard and his N+1 escorted him to his desk so he could take his personal belongings and nothing else. It was verified what he took and then he was escorted out of the building. He was not allowed to talk to anybody inside the building. Pay
A standard would be like this (to show the difference) Get asked into the office and told you are let go. The company I work for has a policy to make it effective the day itself. You can get your at ease, write a farewell email if you so desire and chat a bit with your co-workers and leave when you want. Your severance pay will be paid with the next payment and will be between 6 weeks and much longer.
So as this is the police who are there to protect us (and our privacy) I assume they were all fired, right? (Holding my breath for a yes. Turning a bit blue now.)
That will depend from city to city and situation to situation. In my case it would be as my company would cover the cost. And if they did, it will also be, because of the number of miles I drive the rest of the month and the distance I have to go.
If it is every sunday, reserving a car is also no problem as you can cancel for free if you do it more than 24 hours before. I used it when there were strikes in Belgium.
As everybody is in a different situation, here is what I did: Before I sold my car I tried it out for 2 months to see if it was any good for me. That way I had a back up plan if it would not be good enough. I did not touch my car during those two months to make a fair test.
At this moment I pay around 50EUR per month on driving. This because I mainly use it only to go shopping once a week and that is what I was using my car for anyway.
Many people use it as a replacement for a second car. They still have a car they use to drive around in all the time.
They say it is cost effective if you don't drive 10.000km per year and don't use it every day. Obviously YMMV (pun intended) and it will differ from country to city to even your street if this is an option, so try it out for a month and if it does not work, you lost perhaps 50EUR. If it works, spend that less per month easily. I am spending around 200EUR less per month.
There is a time and place for both. One is not better than the other. Some things can be done better with email, other with a phone call.
The majority of a technical call is not the solution. It is identifying the problem. That part is MUCH easier on the phone, because questions will be asked. An email will go into a queue and answered when they get to that email. The customer might also not be able to respond directly and does it later.
So each back and forth will take a while. I have seen email conversations that took several day, because the customer insisted to do it via email. It could have been done in a 5 minute call.
So when is email good? If you already know what the problem is and you already have a solution. That way you can send a step by step explanation.
And all depends on who the customer is. In the end the majority is much better handled by phone. Or you need to send also an explanation on how to cut and paste.
The reason they call it a promotion is because it is way less stress full. And then you get the 50% of people where the standard reply is "please send us ANYTHING so we can identify you somehow" or the mail that says "It do no work. please fix."
The fun starts when there are multiple possible causes of an issue. I had a dual display (no issue with Xinerama) with NVidia and Windowmaker and obviously they both pointed to the other as being the problem because there could nothing be wrong with what they have. Add X into it and it becomes really fun.
I do not own a car and exclusively use car sharing when I need a car. The reason is money. I now pay less per month than what I used to pay for insurance. Been doing it now for about 2 years. And I must say that the cars are not dirty at all. The reason is acountability. They know who used the car when.
So if I would get into a car and there is a lot of trash in the car, I just notify the company and they will make a note of it. If I see it before I get in the car, I do not open the car and could inform them right away. If the same person does it again, another user will notify the company. When you abuse the cars, you will get banned, so no more car for you.
It is not that you just walk up to the car with a pre-paid card and drive around. You need to subscribe. I must say, it just works and the cars are cleaner and newer that what I used to drive myself and better maintained for sure. I use http://www.cambio.be/cms/carsh...
Nothat he tried it, but apparently that he was negligent.
If I put a wallet on a table and I walk away from it and come back 30 minutes later and it is stolen, then yet that is very much my fault.
The think is that even if it is my fault, it does not mean that the other person is not guilty. The two things are not one or the other. Ot is very well possible that BOTH parties are guilty and in this case of two different things.
And the train drives itself also almost automatic. However even there the driver needs to be alert and reacts. They have a dead mans switch. Perhaps something theu should need to add in the Tesla.
That depends on personal preference and where it would be:
Great to visit, but not to live.
I have family both in Spain (parents) and in Germany (sister) and I live in Belgium. I know a few people in both Spain and Germany. Both personal and professional. If you look at just the money, a Euro in Spain will generally go further than one in Germany in similar situations. So if you get paid more, you should have more at the end of the day to spend on other things.
Working is different in that the hours in Germany leave a lot of time at the end of the day; in Spain it wll be 3 hours during lunch, meaning you work later.
Social life is different in that in Germany you go to one place and that is where you stay where in Spain you go from place to place.
Germans are more closed so it is a bit harder to make a connection (more than e.g. Americans) but will be closer after that. Spanish will be a bit more open.
Also know that Spain is much more than just the touris part and language can be an issue if you are not living in a major city. e.g. where my parents live, there is no work (they are pensioners, so no problem) and you must speak Spanish, otherwise you die.
But again coming back to the money. The cost of living in Spain is cheaper than it is in Germany. Obviously if you go from a small town in Germany to Madrid or Barcelona, this won't be the case. If you go from Berlin to a small town in Spain, the comparison is also not fair.
Where it myself, I would go to Spain in a hartbeat. There are great smaller cities that are not just known for tourism, espeicaly if they offer me a similar job and pay more. Even with the same income I could do more.
Wow, It is pretty easy and what we have is that there are X man hours that need to be done. Say 120 hours for a specific job for 1 week to make it simple.
What I see is that in the US you would hire two people and let them work for 60 hours each. 2 people have work. In Europe the idea is that you need to hire 3 people at 40 hours each. 3 people have work. That means 1 more.
That is what we did at one job. They were pissed and we told them to shut up and make up the (standard) contract. We were the department that wanted them. We also understand that they will have no idea what kind of people and skills we need and what we won't need.
e.g. if we ask for only bash experience and you don't have that, but you have other languages, we know you will be able to function or not.
We rather have somebody who has all the languages and not bash than only bash and nothing else. We know what the level of knowledge needs to be and how long it will take to train somebody who does not have that specific skill set.
I do not expect HR to know that.
OTOH I have worked for departments at other companies where the manager did not want to be bothered in the hiring process. "Just send me the best 2 and I will pick the best one." and he did, regardless if they were shitty or not.
So I know it is not always HR that is at fault. For many managers it is very hard to explain what they want and what they need and the difference between the two.
In Belgium many ask a proof of behavior and in that there will be if you went to jail, but not for what. After a while your slate will be cleaned, depending on the crime. However this is not yet perfect. What they are talking about it to 1) Have it devided in to type of crimes. So the is a difference between a child molester and a thief. 2) Have diversity in what request can be done. e.g. a bank will only see the info about the thief, but not about the child molester. A school will only see info about the child molester, but not about the thief.
What is seen now is 'person X is cobccted for 9 month of which 6 months on probation in 2007'
The problems they face: 1) It is the person and NOT the company that can request this info. It is then up to him to hand it over to the employer or not. If he wants to he can say he is no longer interested in the job and nobody will know about it, 2) It is pretty difficult to make this failproof.
And these are just the rough ideas. Once you start to think about it, you will notice issues. I do think that at least thinking about it is a good thing.
Where I work we have people that had convictions employed. Especially if you see it is something they did when they were 18 and are now 40. In the mean time they are married and have 2.4 children and a dog behind a white picket fence and got into into fights when he was young. Great employee, I must say and only me, my N+1 and HR know about it.
A PC so I can use whatever I want. XBMC, MPlayer; mp3, Firefox (for e.g. YouTube) or what not.
I have 4 screens connected to it. 3 screens on Display Port and those are standard terminals and 1 on HDMI. That is connected to a splitter that divides the single HDMI to 3 screens. 1 a 'normal' terminal, 1 a 24" TV and one a 52" TV.
2 standard keyboards and mice and one keyboard/mouse.
For now no need to have a seprate output for that one screen./ two tv output. I use it mainly to watch videos, but I can still use it for something else as well.
Not so much for cars, more intended for bicicle riders. They are even called 'fietsen vangers' or 'bicicle catcher' in Belgium. And no, from what I have seen in the US, they are not mandatory.
But yes, they increase visability and safety for not that much of a price. here a Side Underguard Crash Test
With the current numbers, driving is still twice as safe.(130MM vs 60MM miles) As there are no numbers given about cruise ccontrol vs non-cruise control I could not say which is better. I know in many places it is not allowed to use cruise control because it is dangerous in those places.
So at the current state of the art it seems more prident to let the driver keep an eye on the autopilot rather than the other way around.
You could replace industry with sector or even department. I hear it all the time that without department X the company would be useless. They are right, because if that department would be useless, it would not excist. What is forgotten that this is true for all the other departments as well. It is true that if some are removed the time impact is felt might not be as soon as others, but it will be felt.
So what I would like to hear is what people would think is the second most important and even then you might see a biased answer.
Because he was not the intended person. Leaked does not mean 'published'. If one person that should not have access to data has access to data, it is leaked. From that moment on the data must be considered unsecure.

Well, she is for every person to own their email server so snooping from the government is not possible anymore and that can't be a bad thing.
