  1. Don't overdo it for homeuse on Best Home Backup Strategy Now? · · Score: 1

Just pop in another HD and use a script like http://storebackup.org/ to do the incremential backups. I do not zip my files, so the restore is the most importand part. What I use it for is if I did something stupid, more then being afraid of hardware failure.

The main things I backup are settings and some files.
Things I do not backup: CDs and DVDs I ripped. Those are on another HD that is read-only. Website stuff, as that is already backed up with my hoster.
Scripts and such I have are with my webhoster as well.

I often see that people do a complete overkill with backups. I understand that if you are a geek, it is fun to play with it. If you are a standard user, first lok at how you want the restore to be happening.

So what I do is have the backup HD mounted as read-only and read-write by root when doing the actual backup. Yes, I have lost data, but as it was for my home, who cares if I lost 3 years from a mailing list? In all that time I have never really missed it. I now even do a yearly cleanup of all my mails. I just delete them, as I never look at them anyway.

Just because I can do backups does not mean I must.

  3. Re:Visist Every Residence on Australian Police Plan Wardriving Mission · · Score: 3, Interesting

In Belgium when you move, the local cop will make a visit when you moved. This is to see if you live where you say you live. This can go from just knocking on your door and say hello to actually walk around and see if you live there, not just rent the place as a fake address.

A friend of mine had a nice chat and some coffee with the guy.

For me it took some three months and he really looked if I lived there, because each time he could I worked or was in another country and when I could he was not available. So he might have thought I was just renting the place with nothing in it, so e.g. debt collectors can not take away my stuff, while in reality I was living in a mansion.

In another town, my local cop was somebody who I often shared a beer with. And when I had a ticket, I just gave him the money and he would do the rest. He then would put the proof of payment in my mailbox. That way I did not need to go to the post office and buy the stamps. The system is now changed and I can pay directly via my bank.

In those days, the local cops would get the first beer free in the pub and payed for everything after that. I liked it, because I knew they knew what was going on in their neighborhood and so what if they where sometimes drunk. It showed the rest they were people as well and made the distance much smaller.

But then in Belgium drinking is not something that is frowned upon and the result is that we have the world largest brewery company.

The whole process of development is continues.

The strange thing is that many people still think that the X.0 is beta and will wait for X.1. I have seen differences that are huge between e.g. X.1 and X.2 and minor differences between X.3 and Y.0 and it has been confirmed by SUSE people that the numbering in itself means nothing in a technical sense.

You only have one password to change?

I have a multitude of different logins and passwords. Some of them are the same, some of them are different, some of them I can change, some of them I must change.
Change is between 30 days (Not 1 month) and 3 months.
Some logins and passwords I can not select myself and are given to me and can not be changed at all.

At this moment I have some 20+ logins and passwords.

Most are not systems that I have control over. They just give me a login and password and thats it. If I change it, they mail the new random password again.

So I have a file with my logins and passwords. Unsafe? You bet. I just do not see any other way to do this. Access is through different ways, browser, ssh, ...
Some are via Citrix where I can not save the passwords in the browser.

I have tried to explain that changing the passwords every month makes things LESS secure, instead of more.

Well, as Fisherman's Wharf is a tourist attraction, I would think that the majority of the people are tourists.

And about the part that says about what people should do, people should design a secure system where one of the factors is that people WILL carry them around on Fisherman's Wharf. Do not blame the users for usage, blame the designer for not putting it in the design.

The 'stupidity' of the users is well known and well documented. Persons are smart, people are stupid. If you deal with security, that is what you have to think about. If you don't, your design will be flawed.
