Good for privacy of course, but as so much of the web is ad-funded is this really going to be good for the web as a whole ?
Yes. Less advertisement means less people wanting to tell you how to do stuff. It also means less sites that are only there to advertise (like TV is there only to sell soap).
Instead of the product the sites sells to their customers, the advertisers, the public will become the customer again. It could mean the end of a gazillion sites that basically copy and paste each other information. Instead of quantity, it would mean quality.
I and all people using some sort of ad-blocking would love to have less advertisement. And I guess plenty of those who don't use them won't be upset if there were less advertisements.
Are people so much into corporate speech that they think they can not exist except if some company is sponsoring them? Yes, there are exceptions.
Also do not forget to get some customer input. It will be extremely hard to change anything if your customers are perfectly happy with what you have. For you it might be bad, but perhaps for the customer it is 'good enough'.
Doing the manager thing and figuring out the numbers might even lead you to the fact that changing things would cost more, while not gaining extra income or saving anything.
So it could be that it is just a 'nice to have' and not a 'need'. You will need to prove it makes money, otherwise they will not do it.
'Making money' can also mean that your customers will be happier, or they will call you less, saving money, because you can do other things. It can also happier customers, which might be important if you measure customer satisfaction.
Basically you need to sell the idea and the company needs to buy the idea. If you can agree on a price where both parties gain in the deal, then it is good. If one of the parties does not gain anything, then it is a no-go.
This is true for every change in whatever it is you want to change. From the color of the toilet paper to the closing of a factory.
Why not (politely) tell them? We had some sytem that had some broken MP3 on it and we had no idea till somebody told us. Also many music is so lousy, because they do not want to pay the local RIAA (in Belgium you must pay for that, as you are broadcasting music) and thus go for some lousy music that the company provides them.
This is intended as a joke, I asume, but it also brings up the fact that it will be different sort of data that is now collected.
When I look at CRM systems, they used to contain basically the address and perhaps logs from calls they made to the call center. Now whole phone conversations are logged as well as faxes and letters that are scanned, together with images and video that is available. Faxes and letters used to have only a reference number and you could look them up in a file cabinet.
So even though there is not that much more data collected, (things were already available) they are now all put in the database. Where it used to be an entry 'customer was extremely angry and cursed a lot' it now saves the mp3 for all eternity (where legal).
So yes, the HD space it takes is bigger and thus the amount is bigger, yet it does not automaticaly mean that sort of data is bigger. e.g. do we suddenly have shoesize or other data available? Could be but it also could be that we just have different file formats we now save in the databse.
Why analog? A digital clock would do the same thing. You know that on a digital clock it changes also every minute, right? You could even use a clock on the PC and use a mirror.
The reason manufacturors shy away from Linux (at least in Europe) is money. On the one side they pay Microsoft. On the other side they get money for shareware from anti-virus companies and games and what not.
The other thing is support. It is already expensive for them to have Winders support. Training people to give Linux support as well will add to that support, which the customer will pay. There are more customers interested in Windows then in Linux, so the support cost for a Linux machine will be higher then on a Windows machine.
This combined will lead to Linxu being more expensive then Windows.
Now if you leave out the shareware and trial software on the Windows machines (or add them to the Linux machines) then we have a completely new game. In general the hardware manufacturors would be very happy to go Linux and drop Windows if that would be an option. There would be no major change in manufacturing. I even have seen a factory where they build Windows and FreeDOS (for companies who have their own licence with e.g. Microsoft) next to each other. There is no difference between a Linux or a FreeDOS or a Windows image.
The fact wether or not people will buy a new PC later is not (at this moment) the issue. If they can bring out Linux now and sell more, they will do it. What happens when in 3 years time they sell less is aniother problem and will be dealt with then. In the mean time they have an advantage over the competition of three years selling more.
And then leak that information to the 'News aganencies' who then can tell that mr.X used the F word a lot in the private of his own home. and even has used the N word (when completely alone and listening to Clawfinger)
This then will ruin the starting politic carreer or if it is something 'worse' (like doing the nasty with the intern) wait to bring it out when needed.
Although they are not illegal in any way, they can be enough to influence the politacla agenda.
Oh and American Public, please bend over a bit more, because I am sure you love what they are doing to you, otherwise you would struggle more and perhaps even yell rape.
By definition, a large percentage of the population is stupid.
By what definition is that? The only thing that I can come up with is that 50% of the population is less smart then average. That does not mean they are stupid. It just means that 50% is below the average by definition.

How can I now mention the German autobahn without being 'godwinned'?
I can see them jumping around and yelling:
DONATIONS! DONATIONS! DONATIONS!
Play it with seventies porn as the sound background, then you can hear what the politicians intend to do to you.

You got plastic beads? Mine had to make our own. Did that together with my meighbour Leo Baekeland.

Should that not be GNU/gNewSense?
It will be later, much later and probably too late. You should start acting now. Actively! And then hope that now is not already too late.
I am going to use that as a defense. As you did not say you were not a lawyer, I am going to assume you are one.
So here goes: I did not make these drugs, I did not put the crack in the bags -- they shipped to me that way. I only sold the imported stuff.
Yep, that will work great. :-D
Don't we have Fox News for that?

No, pre-installation did. And that cause others to want it for free.

McCarthyismIt is the same as it is now. Just the name of the enemy has changed. Rember, we were never at war with Eurazia.

So basicaly you agree with 'opt out' even after you already selected 'opt out'?
Or it might not be the website I was expecting and thus do not trust.
Instead we give then political power.
They probably just do a `grep 'user name'`. Just add an extra space in your name and it will work as well.
I am James Robinson. We all are James Robinson.
Indeed. As long as there were no kids or animals harmed just like there are no people killed in the movies.
