Also you are reading slashdot, so that means you belong to the elite that does know how virusses and the internet work. The numrous spam emails I get tell me that there are enough people out ther that are not as smart as you are.

Discouraging friends and family to not use them is sending me spam, unless all of your friends and family are as technical-savy as you are. Most unlikely.

That it is bad for you does not mean it is bad for everybody.
Safe computing is NOT blindly advising people about security and think they are as technical as you are. If that were the case, I would not be getting any spam.

  6. Re:It's very simple for Microsoft on Microsoft's SUSE Coupons Have No Expiry Date · · Score: 2, Informative

First it is SUSE, not SuSE
Second There is only SUSE 10. The next will be SUSE 11. That is SLES and SLED for you
Third, the versions you talk about is openSUSE. openSUSE 10.3 Alpha 4 just came out and is unrelated to this whole deal.
There are no coupons for openSUSE. You can just download it.

Now SLES or SLED are valid for 7 years anyway.

Also understand that these coupons buy you one year of free updates on SLES or SLED. Now what if in 8 years they are at SUSE 14 and you recieve a coupon from Microsoft. What most likely will be is that they send you to the URL where you can download it just as you can now. They activate your account for one year and send you a bill if you want to use it for the next 6 years.

That is all that coupon is. It is a registration key that Microsoft has payed for. The product will not stop running, you just won't be able to update for free. Now if that is not an issue, then you might as well use openSUSE with a 2 year lifespan on free updates.

So no, if Novell is smart, they will sned you a bright new shiney whatever they have as their latest URL. They got Microsoft payed for their promotional material.

    2) Adblock
    3) http://www.privoxy.org/
    4) Adblock

and for some sites that I want to see without the stoopid ads all over or where I do not like the standard layout (like slashdot or Toms hardware) I use http://userstyles.org/

OK, perhaps I am overactive, but I am now unable to watch the internet on an other computer, because of all the ads that are trown to me.

All this should be a hint to companies that people do niot want this. Ebay should look at who its base customers are and serve them. Ignore the extra money you can make. It pisses people off.

But as it is a company, the management will be only there for three years, or so, so as long as they can milk it, who cares, right?

I think most people do that. At least with smaller programs and scripts. The fact that you end up spending way much more time then you could actualy win the first time is irrelevant.

e.g. I made a script makeSUSEdvd so I did not need to do the process manually each month. The time I gained by doing it with a script is completely and utterly lost by the time I spend making and perfecting the script.

The up side is that several thousand of people have enjoyed it and it is the basis for making your own SUSE based distribution. Another plus thing is that I have learned many things doing this, which will help me in the future.

The downside of automating things is that when you need to do it again, you sometimes have to look it up again.
