  1. Re:Winamp on The Amazing World of Software Version Numbers · · Score: 1
We're both right! From archive.org's capture of Winamp's FAQ:

    What happened to Winamp 4?
You're not imagining things. Yes, we skipped a version number for the following reasons:

    • Winamp 5 combines the best aspects of Winamp 2 and Winamp 3 into one player. Hence Winamp 2 + Winamp 3 = Winamp 5!
    • Who the hell wants to see a Winamp 4 Skin :P
    • We think that a Fibonacci sequence for versioning might be pretty damn cool.
    • We improved so much in Winamp 5 that we figured it warranted skipping a version. ;)

  8. Use privacy options on Employers Trolling for Current Employee Resumes? · · Score: 5, Informative

Careerbuilder, Dice.com, Monster.com all have privacy options. One I use goes is similar to this: "keep my resume searchable but hide my name, phone number, email address, and my current employer's name"

So how do future employers contact you? They use the contact job seeker option on the website, such as Dice.com, and Dice would then forward the email to you. It is then up to you unveil your identity when replying back to the employer.

What you can do to further your privacy is use a new email address that doesn't have your name in it to inquire more about the job opportunity.

    Good luck!

Judging from your young ID #, I'm suprised that you do not remember JVC's VHS vs Sony's Betamax.

Betamax, although had a maximum of 60 min. when first released, had superior quality video compared to JVC's (3 hours length) VHS.

Sony updated Betamax's technology to have comparable length times as VHS while maintaining greater video qualtity but VHS had already become established, causing the market demand for Betamax to decease.

    What's the lesson?

"Be better than the competition" --> Sony was
"and make sure people learn that" --> Sony marketed but was too late, and also did not open its formats (open formats, firefox & w3c, sound familiar?).

Perhaps, timing, which the harvard Prof. mentions, matters as well.

    Cheers.
