    most ATC systems run on really slow equipment.

    most AFTN Mesassages (fliight plan, met data etc) fly between airports as 2400baud. some of the faster ones use 28,8 modems, or X25

    the computers are often pentium class machines (running slack 4.something) or stratus servers (hpux ones)

    the point is speed is not nessasary, ensureing the message gets there reliably before the aircraft does is nessasary.

    xset up to boxes with your favorite os, pop in a wired and wireless nic in each, put the wired ends on there own networks (192.168.1.xxx and 192.168.2.xxx) and use a diffeent set for the wirelesss portion (10.15.3.xxx). set up each box to route, and run the wireless segment using encrypion L2tp comes to mind..
    and enjoy.

    not the cheapest, but secure none the less, and you can allways stick a crisco logo on em :)

    bad idea, students will become resentfull, and if its theri equipment, its shouldnt be implemnting policys on it.

    proxys are ok.. but preventing someone from changeing their settings is bad..
    i have seen this.

    I work in an it fuction @ Algonquin College in Ottawa Canada.

    we have a residence with cisco ip phones, aprox 1100 students with madatory laptops (IBM Thinkpads runing win98, nt 4, 2k and linux)
    mixed in with a substantial wireless 802.11 network, Mac, Sun, Sgi, os390.... all working together across 7 campuses 50 miles apart. if you think you have headachs..

    btw help desk responce will be 65% of calls resolved 1st day, and 10 min service to labs/classrooms.

    A company called Ubitech, Makes an AFTN Message switch (a system that shuffles flightplans, met data, etc. arround) runs the system on linux

    they sold it through a us company, Litton Denero (yes the same people responsible for the US Navy's NT destroyer)

    installations include singapor, angola, st martin, and a few other countries.

    i work in a computer store. the levey took affect on jan 1/01 on all new orders from the manufactures. if its in a store now, on in a wholesalers warehouse somewhere, its safe from the levy., but when those run out, up goes the price.

    the way i see it, my levy on a disk just goes to buy a licence for whatever, at a discounted rate.
    ianal but in Canada, copyright allows us to make non commercial copies for personal use.

    i agree with a return in investment, but still alot more plans shoujld leave paper, and reach reality.

    you can produce a pantentable object because most technologies arnt patented, they are trade secrets. if you patent something it is publicly avalible but protected, trade secrets arnont patented and prtected only through the silence of its creator, if someone revese enginers it and figures it out, then they can patent it, because trade secrets have no protection
    as far as i know css was a trade secret and not patented

    its posible to have stuff sent diorectly to the modem as it has a non routable class a 10.X.X.X address asigned to it.

    an @home tech told me so...

    mistake #0 (you know techs start counting at 0)
    was buying at future shop.
    whenever i go in to pick up blank cd's or something, i see a salesmen helping a family out with a compaq with printer, scaner, and a pile of god knows whatelse. the facts are
    1. salespeople are clueless
    2. are paid on commision, so theyll sell you the kitchen sink
    3. cost people more money then they need to spend to be able to send email and word process

    i work in a computer store as a tech/sales and im amazed by the number of people who want to replace a computer that doesent work (wont boot) rather then fix it.
    fixing it is usually a mater of reinstalling windows over itself and it works fine..

    a guy i know, ok hes a prof of mine, set up his firewall so that if he was scaned, he would do a really nasty saint scan against the scannner.

    he had to stop when he got nasty phonecalls from @home asking why their machine would crash whenever they scaned his ip.

    smtp send mail between sites, kinda like a mail truck drivieing from ottawa to toronto. POP3 and imap, are you going to your mailbox to get your mail, you personally only ever have to deal with smnp if you run a mail server or something like that
