    cisco switchs, and i would assume dsl/canle equipment have the ability to resrict the number of allowable mac addresses at the port.

    on a cisco switch it either A) doesnt care how many there are B) Blocks packets from unauthorized mac addresses, or C) disables the port, upon detection of multiple mac addreses, and reqire it to manually be enabled

    Also when routers forward the packet, they ajust the source and destination mac, but the src ip and dest ip stay the same (except with nat)

    The Canadian Gov has a identifying mark whic is the word Canada with a cnaadian flag flying from the d, over the letter a. This Idnetifies gov departments and should not be used by others.

    The Candian Flag however should be free for all citizens to use in a respectfull manner.

    The end of Perl harbour was so false its not evem funny. yes you guys managed to get b25's off a carrier and droped bombs on tokyo, but unlike in the move where "millitary targets only" was screamed adnausium, you droped incindiary bombs (basicly they burn, rather them make big expolsions) on a part of tokyo that was mostly wood and paper construction.

    Why not, let me count the ways;

    1. iPod is the size of a deck of cards, the Riot is bigger

    2. iPod uses firewire, Riot uses usb. can you say slow

    3.The iPod also acts as a portable hard drive

    4. It doesnt auto synch with anything

    5. Doesnt work with iTunes.

    iPod killer, no f$#@ing way, its the same as every other mp3 player only with more storage space. Sorry Rio, please try again

    Its kinda ironic, when a company, that Does nothing but show ads has to close due to insufeciant revenue.

    Advertisers spend millions on ads to air on tv, and here we have a site, that people go to ON PURPOSE to see ADVERTISEMENTS. un, if thats not marketing i dont know what is, and it can only add to the ad's market effectiveness.

    Rather then running seperate conduite for cableing, use the cold air returns. talk to the HVAC (heating/vent/Air cond) and makesure that you have a main return running straight from the basement to the atic, and floor and celling returns in each room (good practice for ventilation anyway.) And you should have no problem running plenum rated cable (fibre, cat5e whatever) through them.

    as an asside, if you plan on having 1 room in the house with most of your equipment, add extra registers to get more Cooling in summer and dont forget about fans in the ducts to improve air circulation)

    The tresury board sets the Standards for qualifications of federal government workers. Currently they want minimum college diploma, plus relavant certifications to the job posting ie, A+, MCSE, CCNA,CNE etc.

    I work in IT At A local college, less then 6 months out of school. my certs are
    A+, Apple Product Profesional, AppleCare Service, IBM Desktop Laptop and Server and my College Diploma.

    i plan to write the Network + before the year is up, and the CCNA after i get more time on CISCO gear.

    This isn't troll folks, its a valid point.
    teaching the principles behind something is important, but also do it with software that is current. to me learning to use a peice of software well takes longer then learning the principles of animation.

    Dont take away a usefull skill from your students. for the sake of removeing microsoft. (that said maya runs on Mac OS X which is built on bsd unix and runs oh so sweet)

    Only GSM Phones support the logo changeing. fido uses gsm, so all their nokia phones can do it, rogers uses tdma, so its phones cant. GSM requires a sim card, where user information, such as the address book and optional logos/ringtones are stored. the good news however for you rogers users, is that they are comming out with gsm service soon, so if you subscribe to it, you get to change your logos.

    An uncle of mine, was a floor manager at Northern Electric (Now Nortel) they would ship telecom gear in big crates overseas. it always seemed to arrive at its destination broken. This ofcourse was a problem.

    So they call in the enginers to study the problem. They decide to get a crate, ship an acceleromiter down to a field office somewhere, and have them ship it right back, to find out the forces a crate in shipping undergoes.

    so they ship the crate down, and down sends it back, the enginers pry it open, and discover much to thier dismay, that the acceleromiter has not survived the journey.

    It's important to remember that the DNS servers themselves are patched and secured (i hope) but the issue , as I see it is that there are only so many dns servers.

    If you could shut down the root DNS server and then work your way down, you could wreck havock on the whole internet. The net would still work (probably) but you would have to use ip's, not names, and thus the huddled masses would be lost.

    i use visio, and generally when i do diagrams my icon set varies based on the idea im trying to express, and to whom.

    generic device symbols (ie cylender with arrows represents a router, rectangle with aroows a switch) are good for use amoungst techies who want the layout and dont care about what the devices are.

    i like to use specific product symbols for presentaion diagrams, and for less technical audiences because it helps people equate the icon to the green box in the rack. (ah, so thats how its conected..)

    lots of people see this and say the kids should look like real people.. this is annimation. why should they.. did the loony toons have people who looked real? what about the simpsons. yellow skin and blue hair.

    Final Fantasy was beautifully done, and looked real, but monsters inc. is meant to have a cartoony feel to it, and real looking people i think would just be out of place..

    I make a good chunck of $$ fixing thinkpads. you bring it to me moday, i diagnose it, fill out an online form, tuesday morning part shows up, install it, pass go and collect 200$ (not really but i get a nice ammount) customer usually gets the unit back in less then 24 hours regardless of the problem.

    I find as a dealer, apple is a bitch to dealwith, but thats another story..

    home DSL Routers are wonderfull (i have one, I know) but usually act more like gateways then their big brothers from cisco.

    cisco kit is usually attached big band bandwith pipes, and also has more features then a linksys.

    cisco stuff can send out bad rips like you wouldnt belive, while a linksys can do rip, its usually not used in a home setting.. in fact @home filters that port to subscribers

    basicly there not capable of the same level of dammage, and not much of a threat..

    i am the resident mac expert where i work, and most pc buyers buy the computer monitor printer, andmaybe a scanner for 2k.

    most mac people buy the mac, monitor, printer, but also throw in the goodies, like airport, isub/soundsticks, dv divices etc. bring the average mac sale in the 5k plus range so i expect the iPod to sell well.

    bundeling isnt really an issue choice is.
    macs come with quicktime (real), itunes (winamp), drag and drop cd creation (adaptec). the difference is, in windows i have to use ie to set up a net connection, on a mac i dont have to use quicktime, or itunes. but in windows media player pops its big ugly head up everytime

    even redhat bundles; gimp (imageing), xmms, etc.
    xp's features arnt anything that hasent been offered before, they just subtly force you to use them, rather then the competitors.

    7th graders getting a laptop is a bad idea for many reasons.

    i recently finnished college, and am working in an it related capacity

    1.my reliance on technology means that i need a machine to do things that my parents were taught to do in there heads.

    2. laptops in class make it easier not to follow the class by provideing distractions.

    3. they will get broken. part of my current job is to repair college laptops. college students manage to mangle them well, imagine what what 7th graders would/could do to them

    Gnome is pretty and nice. i use it, i like it. i also have a sun box and run cde. Solaris runs servers. do we need all that prettyness and niceness eating cpu cycles on a webserver?

    call me a troll, but isint this one of the bigest complaints about win2k, it has a bloated gui that eats resources better left for runing services on a server.

    cde isnt pretty, but it does the job, and doesnt eat alot of resourses.

    yes i know sun is offering a choice of desktops, but gnomes lack of inclusion really doesnt seem like a big loss to me..

    5 segments (100meters long, 350 feet each),
    4 repeaters and,
    3 populated segments ie. of the 5, only 3 can have hosts on them, the other 2 are runs between

    This is due to latency, signal degridation etc. so cat v definately wont work

    now this all changes for fiber, 1500m + depending on the type..

    Ivar booksheles from Ikea make a good rack for just about anything. they cost are completely configurable, height width depth, sheves or not etc. and cost less then 50$ CDN
    and they look really cool painted black.

    All of europe agreed on a standard in 1984 for digital phones called gsm. works allover europe, in Canada, a small provider has had GSM service in cities for the past 5 years. Rogers (largest cell network in Canada, on Nov 1 will release its GSM Offering accross its whole network, meaning if you can get cell service there now, youll get gsm there in a month.

    AT&T in the US will offer this in about 2 years.

    the reason fo rthe switch is that it was discovered that cdma doesnt work with the new 3g wireless services (developed in europe for gsm) thus requireing the switch to gsm.
