SP1 is smart like that, and it recognizes your tendancies and sets random pictures of pink ponies and unicorns. Even worse, it also forces you to look at Bliss.jpg once in a while, using low jpg encoding and downscaled to 480*640.
And while IBM helped birth Eclipse and still funds it to some degree, that is an OSS IDE, and a lot of it (plus a lot of the add-ons) were built by volunteers.
Except, IBM still buts a lot of effort into it. Down the hallway from where I sit, is the Eclipse team. Not only that, but Eclipse is the foundation of a lot of other IBM projects, like Jazz.
The quicker Microsoft gets rid of non-standard software, the better the alternatives work. I know there's quite a bit of sites that don't work under firefox, but the user doesn't have a choice (like my parent's payroll site at the gov't). While IE7 is still a long ways away from ideal, we must say that it's better than IE6 (using the lesser of two evils theory), and I'm happy that they made this choice.
The firefox penetration has increased to the point where people don't know what it is, but they've been told it's better, so they use it.
Cheers to that! I'm native to Nova Scotia, and I'd love to see the economy boost. The only question is, how long will it last? The home of Alexander Bell could be quite the grounds for new innovation and technology once again.
It works by giving in addition to the main volume slider in the mixer/taskbar, providing a slider for each individual program using sound, like this picture. The way, you can have Gaim/Pidgin sounds quite low, while you listen to relaxing music, but are waiting urgently for that important e-mail notification. I've played games where the sound is quite low to begin with, but then I get a message on my IM client, which seems fit to play a deafingly loud sound. IMHO, it's the only thing that Vista got right. I'm not sure how it works, but sound in Linux seems to be flaky at best.
My favourite feature of Vista is it's sound system. The ability to change the volume quickly and easily per program is probably the best (and perhaps only) good feature of Vista. Does Linux even have anything like that? I can't check the link because it appears to be down, and the Coral Cache link doesn't want to load:\.
Fredericton's municipal Wi-Fi is amazing. After living in Fredericton for university, I went to Ottawa for the summer on a work term, and I was astounded at how hard it is to find free wifi in the national capital! Fredericton is really a model of how it should be done.
The corporations do it so that you're force to use their pay service. At that point it's not about making the phone cheaper, it's about making money else wheres. Most consumers don't know what a lock is, and are quite naive to the entire thing, and that's how they get away with it. Even after being explained the limitations and whatnot, they still didn't care.
I've seen many people just loose their OEM disk (or just never got one). How should those people be handled? Is Piracy still piracy if it's the same version as what was there before?
I'm not opposed to making it an addiction at all. I think sometimes people get way to wrapped up into games, and it affects their school, work, or social life (offline, of course). Then again, electronic addiciton in general is a pretty big addiction (IM, IRC, blogging, etc etc).
I would have rather seen a comparison between different TV tuners. The article pretty much concluded to what I would have thought: Linux is pretty solid, but a challenege for somebody not techical savvy, and windows quick and simple to set up, with a few glitches in hardware/UI.
I don't own a DVR, but I never bothered to fastforward during ads when watching VHS. Sometimes you saw the old commercials you remember from a long time ago, which is kinda fun...I guess.
Actually, ads don't really bother me, unless they're too redundant (same 2 ads every break, repeated once or twice during each break).
I totally agree. I'm not sure why she's making such a fuss, I mean, anybody could look into her window, and anybody could have taken a picture, so why does it matter?
She shouldn't bitch about things that any person on the street could see, but then again, it is called "street view" isn't it?
I personally have the Belkin one, and I hate it. It has horrible transmission and I have a hard time when it's more then 1 foot away from the antenna. There's been times when I've touched my radio's antenna to the unit, and still got nothing better than the FM station in the next city over.
Why would there needed to be programs run on the network, if all the nodes are is data collecting points? Wouldn't it be easier to just store the data and replicate it for later analysis?
...the botnet creaters are trying to make their botnets more secure, and prevent other botnets from taking over the host? I'm not sure whether this is good or bad. The bad news is that it may be harder for them to detect and eliminate, but the good news is that it may keep down multiple infections?
Except that Safari on the iPhone/iPod touch doesn't pass the Acid2 test, while Safari on the desktop does.
I guess the EU would keep taking money, and then give it to the people. It's like a modern day robin hood!
Some already do

I like the 4 hours of battery life it provides. If they made a video (classic) model, it would surely only last a half hour.
Is Verizon is CDMA isn't it? The iPhone is GSM.

Do you know how many people would be heartbroken if they found out Slashdot was run off windows?

I wonder if this affects IBM's J9 in any way?
Perhaps the iPhone shuffle will help those inflicted with the condition known as drunk texting/calling. Then again, Russian Roulette, phone style?
Damnit! Now they tell me!
