  1. License fee on Randall Davis: IBM Has No SCO Code · · Score: 1

So can I get a refund on my SCO extortio^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H license fee?

  2. This isn't a hot spot. on Wheat Field Wi-Fi · · Score: 3, Interesting
I live in Eastern WA and get down to that area almost weekly. This is *not* a hot spot. If you run your favorite wardriving tool you will not detect this network with a normal wi-fi adapter. I've tried. It may be 802.11b, but you need their proprietary hardware with (I think) a directional antenna. And you'd have to know where to point it also...

This is merely just an ISP that is delivering broadband wirelessly. Pretty cool though, that they can cover such a large area that normally would be hard pressed to get a reliable 56k connection (our plants out in the wheats there have no end of dial-up trouble).

Seriously, maybe this is the "handful of spammers responsible for the majority of spam" as per the /. article a week or two ago?

Yeah, right. If you believe that I've got a bridge for sale...

That's a G-body. '78-80 Are technically A-bodies, but the same. '81-88 are G-bodies. And yeah, their diesel did suck. Olds engines are strong, but not 22:1 compression strong...

  5. We looked at the gmail.com domain years ago. on Gmail Under Trademark Dispute · · Score: 1

My Oldsmobile G-body mailing list looked at getting the gmail.com domain about 7-8 years ago. At the time it was owned by a gay-porn mail service. They were willing to sell but we settled for another domain instead. Hindsight being 20/20 and all we could be rich now :)

  8. Use a weed whacker. on Building A Homebrew Robotic Lawnmower? · · Score: 3, Interesting

Seriously, if you go ahead with this, don't use a regular metal mower blade. Use something like a weed whacker--a nylon string. Coverage is far less and speed is less, but speed shouldn't matter in this application. So what if it has to make 4x as many passes...

  9. Follow up on Spokane Gets Unwired · · Score: 1

    ... a follow up:
The linked artile mentions that the "switch" won't be flipped for another week. The local paper article said it was active already, they wanted it up for the big "hoopfest" tournament this weekend.
So, one of the articles is wrong (probably our paper, it sux0rz). Maybe that's why I couldn't connect.

  10. I'm in Spokane. on Spokane Gets Unwired · · Score: 3, Interesting
They mentioned this on the news earlier this week, said that downtown was already wired. So my wife and I went war driving downtown.

Out of 4 random intersections downtown (well within the listed coverage area), 3 had no signal and the 4th was so weak it kept coming and going.

I suppose you get what you pay for...

Well, if they ever get this in the states I think my plate will mysteriously suffer a large "rock chip" right about where the RFID chip is embedded.

  13. I saw this last night, some interesting points. on The Way the Music Died · · Score: 5, Interesting

I saw most of this show on TV last night. I found it interesting that they did NOT mention the Internet or P2P file sharing as a cause for poor music sales. Instead I think they nailed it when they said - More lax regulations on radio station ownership is to blame. Now that everything is Clearchannel, you can only play what they want. Artists used to get their big break by a local station playing their music. - Video is also to blame. You can't just sing any more, you have to look good too. They used Brittney Spears as a prime example--nice to look at but can't sing her way out of a paper bag.
