You can do it but it's just not as easy as Windows Update. When something goes wrong, it goes really, really wrong. Just from past experience. It's not that I can't fix the problems but it's just a major pain in the backside. MacOSX is king when it comes to updates/upgrading though.
it is possible yes but is it for the mainstream joe average? not really. too much hassle as you'll bork a lot of packages and the system will spew a lot of stuff at you and only allows you console.
ok, give me an example of a single task locking out all others. morphos is more like a fork than a continuation. and os4 is just a half baked attempt (ie. it was to port from 68k to ppc) from which will develop more in the future (hopefully).
what are you smoking? i want some!
amigaos was pre-emptive.
it ultimately died because commodore went bust due to a negligent management.
aros is going well.
there's more to linux than just gnome/kde. you've got enlightenment, windowmaker, etc. all these are different and different distros use different DE's/WM. hey, let's do away with DE's and WM, i actually prefer running console based programs. mouse clicks are so tiresome.
on top of that, you can customise everything to your heart's content. ie. building a new kernel. spew all over the computer. ahahahaha
random.
in my opinion, king leopold didn't meekly capitulated, he did what he had to do. the belgian army was pounded by armour and air divisions. the germans had broken through the lines and king leopold had said if this were to happen they would have to surrender to both the french and british. however, the message arrived too late and the rest, as they say, is history. if he had not surrendered, his people would have been butchered into submission anyways. he had to save the lives of his people even if it would cost him his freedom.

a) the planet is hell of a lot smaller than a galaxy, hence small minded.
b) opportunity cost. by using resources on trivial things such as ipods we forgo the chance of using the resources for other important things that advance humanity.
c) polio, small pox were rather too easy to get rid of. but we've got newer diseases to deal with (the drug resistant ones).
make things too obvious. :P
yep.

ssshhhh, i'm trying to be sarcastic.

apt's broke, use aptitude.
ubuntu doesn't automagically update them for you. you're just under a spell created by the linux folk. :P
like i said with the debian, when you go outside of the software repos cos that's where problems begin.
if you stick with debian only software yea sure but when you need programs outside the debian universe and you need to dist upgrade problems occur
yea and microsoft writes everyone else's software for them too do they?
you couldn't do that on linux either without seriously borking your system.
but upgrading windows 2k to 2k sp4 via windows update is cool.
and windows update is just for show. ;P

that's why i buy second hand. i know it's already out of date and it does exactly what i need. hooray for my 2 powerbook g3s (wallstreet and pismo).
start buying some via cpu's. we'll get a third at some stage.
spot on and that doesn't only happen with cpu's. hard disks are the same too.
did you upgrade to feisty or fresh install? the times i updated it didn't work too well.
by making it invisible!!

for the fun of it and because they can. that's what happens when you give people choice. surely the matrix taught you that.
tommy wouldn't go to bed at night so we decided to use the kill-switch on his OLPC.
