I can't speak for the rest of console buyers, but I am personally waiting until a game or feature compels me to buy one of these next gen consoles. I currently have an PS2, and I would say that overall it has outperformed and outlasted xbox's of the same era. That is one of the reasons that I haven't bought an xbox yet. And that's one reason that Sony shouldn't be scared. They brought the ps3 out and an outrageous price, and will see a lot more sales pick up when the price drops to sub-$400. And as many other /.er's will note, Sony traditionally loses money on the console and more than makes up for it in the games department. I would say that most of the console sales are going to come out after Christmas (due to both shortages and people holding out)

Ok, I am slightly confused now...

This simply means that my bits have just as much right to reach your DSL customers as Microsoft's.

So no matter what traffic I send out, it gets there with the same priority as yours or anyone's. I can agree with that.

Under this traditional definition, network traffic shaping is legal: you can discriminate against BitTorrent, gaming traffic, spam, video, etc. (emphasis mine)

This one seems to contradict your previous statement. If the packets I send out have a right to get there just as MS's, how is discriminating against gaming traffic sending things with the same priority?

Traffic shaping is a critical component of running a network well.

As a network engineer/sysadmin, I can understand why they would want to traffic shape. However, I would think that if the right networks were in place (i.e. fiber, or the faster speeds they promised) the traffic shaping should be done at the user level (i.e. Want gaming speeds to increase? Stop downloading the torrent.)

You want to find a real terrorist? He won't wear a turban or follow Islam. No, the real terrorist is the man that uses religion itself as a weapon and fuel for hatred.

The only problem with this is that the current terrorists DO wear turbans and follow islam. This isn't necessarily the same islam that preaches love and kindness, but it is viewed as islam nonetheless.

I'd like to think that I have an interesting vantage point in all of this. I am a Christian, God loving person. I go to church, pray, etc. Unfortunately, I am lumped in with those that have a different view that I do, but still do similar things (pray, go to church). When it comes down to it, I believe each person has free will(even though economic or social situations sometimes dictate otherwise. i.e., starvation). While I may not agree that being gay is a good lifestyle, everyone still reserves the right to choose how they want to live. I don't think the problem lies with thinking differently than others. I think the problem is trying to impose your will on another person. South Park had an interesting episode on "The Passion" (Mel Gibson's movie) in which they mentioned that Jesus preached about love and forgiveness, and we shouldn't dwell on the pain and suffering or even the people that caused it.
It's blind hatred and blowing things out of proportion that causes trouble.

On a side note, I did read the whole Bible. It was a good 10 years ago, so it's not necessarily fresh in my mind.

They just needed the course so they could get the credit for their various degrees. Not everyone's a programmer. Some people are just looking to get past it for what they really need. And yes, I did graduate. And I don't deserve anything anyway. No one does. Hard work pays off in the long run. But you don't care about that. I got caught cheating a few times on assignments- but in each case, I was the one doing the work. Fortunatly, I had a teacher that understood this and was more willing to bargain with me to help the other students rather than do their work. Cheating is going to happen, especially with more easily accessable information. Students that cheat without understanding the underlying principals or concepts are the ones that should be in trouble. I've used many a code that wasn't my own, or that I found on the internet simply because it was easier than typing through all that stuff myself. I could read through all the code and tell the teacher exactly what was happening in the program. But that doesn't mean that I wanted to sit and create 'hello world' programs for each and every one of my classes.

What makes proving a student has cheated in certain CS classes is that work done often has the same exact code behind it, but it looks differently on the surface (colors, button arrangments, etc.). Yes, I know every programmer has their own style, but in many beginners classes the code is supposed to look the exact same.

The second link is more prevelant to what I believe you are trying to get across. The dixie chicks spoke out (outside of their music), and were cut off because of it. The stations didn't censor the material for being racy, immoral, lewd, etc.(obviously descriptions of these are in the eye of the beholder). They took the girls' music off the air for having a different opinion of the president, which is fair and legal (IANAL) as long as they own the stations (which they do).

South Park had an excellent episode on tolerance vs. acceptance. Just because I put up with another person's freedom of speech doesn't mean that I accept what they have to say, only that they have the right to say it.

If wal-mart carries Sheryl Crow's album (which possibly promots anti-gun messages), and they sell guns, they are sending very mixed signals. Just because wal-mart is a retail store does not mean they have to carry Sheryl Crow's (or any other artist's) music. If Sheryl Crow doesn't like that, then she should sell it in a different store, create her own store, or sell on the internet. No artist has a guaranteed right to sell their product in any store of their choosing.

As for the people at Giants Stadium refusing ozzfest, they only have that right if the government does not control any of that land (which, I believe they do). It falls under a similar category of private universities allowed to be affiliated with churches, and deny students based on certain qualities (as long as those qualities are not the ones outlined in the constitution).

On a side note, I think the first link you had was very interesting, and the correct view of both the dixie chicks speaking out, and of the constitutions protections (or non-protections) in them doing so.
