It isn't so much that we want to pay for the e-mail, it comes bundled with the package. I have used an ISP e-mail once, and I would not use it again. GP speaks for me when they said they use it to avoid vender lock in. I've switched many times and never had any problems with telling people of the new address, messing with settings, etc. For me (and the GP) it is just much easier to not use the 'free' service they provide. If there was a way to opt-out of being provided I would, but it's bundled in.

you mean the SonyEricsson? It's a joint venture for both companies: sony brings global consumer markets to the table(and maybe a little design), ericsson brings the phone to the table. I've had both Ericsson and SonyEricsson, and the only thing that changed in between phones (besides being a different phone) was that it had 'SonyEricsson' printed on it. User interface was the same, utilities were the same, etc. I think the Sony- side of the venture is helping out now a little more (especially with cameras), but it's still predominantly Ericsson with a little sony thrown in.

Automatix is kindof a filler for the things that [K]ubuntu doesn't do. It'll install the codecs, mplayer, other video players, and other software fairly easy.

All I had to do for my setup was edit the sources.list and add Automatix's server to that, then make sure the automatix key was recognized, run an update, and an install. After that, Automatix is installed and codec installation is as easy as clicking on a check box.

  7. Re:Silicon Hills? on Is Silicon Valley Reproducible? · · Score: 3, Interesting

Could that be a reason it hasn't flourished as well? When you have a bunch of geeks with nothing to do but get excited about tech, I bet they can do more than geeks with everything to do. Austin has its festivals, nude beach (not always a plus), and plenty to keep you busy. But silicon valley's a 3.5 hour drive to the snow, a 1 - 1.5 hour drive to the ocean, 30 min to San Fran, and 6 hours to L.A. There's plenty to do there (I was born and raised in the east bay, now I live in Texas), and from my visits to Austin, you can find close to all that near silicon valley. The music scene may not be as advertised as Austin's, but it's there.

After being in Texas, the people are just different out here. It's more laid back (except Houston), and there's a lot more of a get-it-done-when-it-gets-done feeling. I think that's what contributes to Austin's silicon hill not being as recognized. Silicon hill may erupt, but I think that the extra-curricular activities and different attitude keep it from being larger than Silicon Valley.

    2.16 Core Duo
    1GB @ 667MHz
    120GB SATA
    DVD Burner, Wireless, Bluetooth, etc.

The Dell also includes a 3 year hardware warranty, vs. Apple's 1 year. I didn't go that heavily into software, but the dell is availible for about $400 cheaper.

AFAIK, the minimums aren't imposed by the credit card companies, but by the establishments. The bar has to pay the credit card company a price per transaction for each transaction. So if they're paying $.50 to run your card, they want to make sure that you're gonna do a fair amount of business with them and at the same time cut their costs to the credit card company. Give me a reason to switch to OSX. I don't care if it's flashier. I'm not swayed by better looking graphical designs. What I want is for an operating system to run the programs that I want. If I'm a gamer, I want games. If I'm a business, I want the cheapest quality solution I can find. If I'm a home user, I want the most compatibility for the best price. Right now, OSX just isn't it.

Maybe when more games get developed, or when more business tools become cross-platform (such as archetectual or engineering programs) then OSX will see some market share. But the best argument I've seen from the Apple community is that they aren't prone to spyware/adware or viruses. That's great, except that I've already figured out how to fix that on my machines and many friends' machines as well. Sure, I see a pop up every now and then, but it isn't enough to make me want a new $2000 system. And I know there's a $600 mac mini, but it doesn't come with a keyboard/mouse or monitor. That's another $200 at least (buying new). If I just want a basic PC, I can get a $350 dell that comes with a keyboard/mouse and monitor.

Until compatibility is there, or until I can load OSX on a cheapie PC, the Mac just isn't going to be adopted by the masses.

I think they were ahead of their time for online media streaming (well, back in the day anyway). It's that the program is bloated and tries to take over every media file type that is on my computer.

And even though WMP is bloated, it just works. No extra configs, goes full screen for any filetype for free(I'm looking your way, quicktime), and isn't too hard on the eyes. Although I do hate any time WMP is open and I insert a flash drive. WMP always wants to sync up with the flash drive, even though the flash drive isn't a damn media player. Ugh. Too much integration can be annoying.
