  1. Vaccinations on Wired on Autism in the Valley · · Score: 1

Considering that most techies are well educated and usually well paid, it follows that their children will get the basic vaccinations. Many people (professionals like pediatricians, and physicians) believe that the vaccinations are the cause of the rise of autism. Some believe that the mercury in the vaccine is poisoning the children, while others may think it has to do with using live cultures to vaccinate versus a dead or weakend form of the bacteria/virus.

  2. My home theatre pc on Future Trends In Home Computing · · Score: 1

I have my PC setup so that I don't need to rely on the TV (unless I have a big audience).

I have a Sony Widescreen monitor (Model GDM-FW900, 16:10 aspect ratio, 22" v.i.s). This lets me watch movies from my DVD-ROM, and my HDTV tuner card (www.accessdtv.com) as well as regular analog TV (currently my cable box). Since the Sony has two inputs BNC and HD-15, I connect my PC via the BNC and my HDTV tuner to the HD-15 connector.
1.85 DVD Movies look great on this monitor. 2.15 movies chop off quite a bit off the top and bottom, but since they are still wide, they still great on the monitor. I use WinDVD 3.0 to play my DVDs.
Now for sound, I use an Audigy Platinum. You can connect this to your own speaker system or you can use the Inspire 5700 Digital set. For an effective home theatre gaming machine, I would use the Inspire 5700 speaker set. You get a system that can decode both DD5.1 and DTS signals, and you also benefit from digital output of the Audigy. The Inspire speakers are not powerful, but they are pretty decent speakers for the price and features.
On top of that I use a GeForce 3 Ti 500 card so I can play games at great speed and quality. And I still have the benefit of watching and recording cable TV and over the air HDTV broadcasts. And I can play all the latest gamees. All in one PC.
And if I want to play my consoles, The Gamecube and Dreamcast, I already have the components that let me connect it to my monitor for some nice progressive scan gaming.

  3. Not too serious... on AMD To Close Plants, Lay off 2300, Lose Gateway · · Score: 1

This is only a bump for AMD. If AMD is on track with their roadmaps for their Clawhammer/SledgeHammer products, then they are able to make Intel sweat again.

Their current platform is pretty good and holds well against the Pentium 4.

However, they do need to convince the corporate market that their processors are worthwhile aside from being fast. Someone at AMD marketing needs a bigger budget...

  5. Dual Booting on MS Anti-Trust Litigation - The Case For Standards · · Score: 1

In the 64-bit version of Windows Whistler, it replaces the MBR partition table with something called the GPT GUID Partition Table. It's major purpose is to do away with the limitations of the Master Boot Record and the various ways hard drive manufacturers use hidden sectors. It it is also a way to to eliminate any other OS to be installed, and it can also be used as a cheap way of doing copy protection as well.

Windows 2000 has something called Dynamic Disks. If you wanted to create a volume set, or a RAID partition in NT 4.0, you just simply did it. Now in 2000 you have to convert your disks to a Dynamic disk to use the fault tolerance options. However if convert to Dynamic Disk, you can no longer allow other OS's to see that whole harddrive.

  6. Perhaps an ex-customer decided to get revenge on Verizon Clogged With Tons Of Spam · · Score: 1

I know several people who had Verizon DSL and when they cancelled their service, they would still get billed. I had to order a stop payment so Verizon will stop billing me and stop stealing my money for their mediocre service.

    Roadrunner service is pretty good.

  7. Re:Read the FAQ on Ask The NSA About Certain Things · · Score: 1

I had a friend who was born in another country (and naturalized here) who went to a job fair. He approached the NSA or CIA (i forgot which) and was interviewed by them. They liked him a lot and was ready to give him follow up material, until they ask him, were you born here in the US?

He answered no, and the represetative took his paperwork and ripped it up.

  8. America vs the World on No Logo: Taking Aim At The Brand Bullies · · Score: 1

It is my observation that in the United States of America, it is the brand name that becomes the dominant product, and too often the product in question is inferior. Other countries do not follow this boneheadness.

I remember a few years back that SSD used to cost at least US$20,000. Those prices seem pretty reasonable to me.
