Aid? Why not stop trying to get our money back from the weakest nations in the world. G7 almost did that last week but as U.S. Treasury Secretary John Snow said:

The G7 Finance Ministers are working together with other donors, with the institutions themselves, and with recipient countries to achieve a consensus on the best way to solve the debt sustainability problem and ensure that our reforms only result in greater, not fewer, resources to poor countries. We agreed that financial support for developing countries will be most effective when it is grounded in the principles of strong country policies, sustainable debt burdens, and accountability for results.

Accountability for results means "You have to shape your country in to a producer of cheap stuff we can sell in the rich part of the world. Btw, forget social reform."

    He also said:
Also, we were all pleased to see Iraq put in place an IMF program. This is an important step toward resolving Iraq's debt before the end of this year -- a goal to which we are committed. Working together, Iraq and the IMF have created a sound and credible economic program. We congratulate them. Iraq's creditors are also to be commended for providing the financial assurances that made this possible.

Give up the money you owed ous before we trashed your country! The money was stolen by Saddam and the Baaths, the population of Iraq doesn't own you shit you gready bastards! Americans bitch about the U.N. How they can't control it and so on. Who controls organizations like the IMF which has a much greater influence on the world?

Perhaps EMP responsible for the platform as a whole and one department for Bluetooth licensing doesn't make sense finacially. Just a thought.

Heres an interesting essay on the subject. One of his three major points: "Central Planning or Licensure of Good Ideas in Software Won't Work. Just as any attempt to centralize or classify all original (or "non-obvious") literary, musical, or scientific writings in the patent office would fail, so any attempt to centralize information regarding all innovative software programs will also fail. No human can know all of software relevant to any large subject, just as no human can know all that has been written on any large subject, and for the same reasons. Current and near-term innovations in the writing of software will cause the amount of software developed every year by the one million professional programmers in the U.S. to grow at an ever-increasing rate. As a result, the burden of central licensing of innovation by the patent office will grow steadily more onerous, creating unnecessary and costly barriers to software progress." This guy saw what was coming in 1991.

A simple analogy I think is correct. A songwriter can have copyright on his work for instance a blues song. But it would be very bad if he could patent the twelve bar blues, the technique of rap or perhaps a specific chord progression. Even if he invents a whole new way of playing like Jimmy Hendrix did it would be sad if that was enough for a patent wouldn't it?:) Same applies to software. You can protect your work (implementation) from copying but you shouldn't be able to protect the idéa like the wordprocessor, web browser, internet bank service, see-through windows, desktop themes, firewall etc.

I did some research on .Net last year during my final year at school and I found it to be just brilliant. The exception handling for instance is just great. Wrote a small app connecting itself to a database on an other server. During a demo the network cable had been disconnected and I got an exception I didn't catch but I didn't have to restart the application. Just plug it in and try again and it worked! Another good thing is that since the CLR specification is open alot of research languages has been ported to the platform. The only thing I didn't like was that it was an Windows only platform. No that have changed and of course that's a good thing. .Net is a lot greater then Windows. It's the natural step from Java. I like Java to and it's my number one language at the time but perhaps this will change that i a couple of years.

Austria is a bit strange so I wouldn't mind them soo much;) Hey, they just let women vote so at least they are moving foreward:) At least we are not stuck with the political party that's the biggest at each election. Which means a vote for a smaller party isn't a complete waste, like voting for Nader in the U.S. In my country Sweden the biggest party would be the Social Democrats. It's a socialist party!!! Scary isn't it? It means we have 5 weeks paid vacation, free health care, free education on all levels. Of course we have problems too but I like my country for most parts so you shouldn't be so scared for what you call left wing. It's pretty neat:)
