    Well I suppose the electrocuted idiots would be easier to clean up. All you need is one of those large brooms.

    I think the culprit is the shareholders.

    There is only so much a company like Microsoft can do with their oodles of cash.
    If they werent trying to impress shareholders they might just spend some of the cash on the community.

    I doubt they have made many changes to the kernel.
    They would have on the other hand added their own features like their distributed file system.

    You cant just release a file system that powerful for anyone to use.
    Microsoft and Yahoo would definately like to look at it and what would you do with a file system designed to be distributed over hundreds of thousands of computers?

    No. They still contribute Pagerank to other websites.

    The pagerank just leaks out from other places. MediaWiki's main site is a good example.
    Also the other language wikis dont have nofollow so they will get a massive boost.

    I'd really hate to be at google at the moment. Search results will be doing really funny things in the next month or so.

    You dont think Google has broken the 'corruption barrier' a few years ago?

    They basically can track you as you surf if they wanted to.
    If they arent corrupt now then they probably arent going to be corrupted.

    Google is contributing back in many other ways.

    Its just not possible for them to release their internal source.

    My Palm (LifeDrive) has had some pretty spectacular falls including on to concrete.
    Its never gotten any damage from one of its falls.

    Tip: When you buy one make sure you get the leather case. :)

    Windows wont let a process allocate more than 2 gig.

    (Not sure about specifics but I'm pretty sure there is no way around it. Doesnt affect other OSs)

    Tip: Throw in the OCR plugin for SpamAssassin. It works beautifully.

    There was Maya for Linux. Not sure what happened to it.

    I'm pretty sure the Linux renderer still exists because thats what all the 3d movies are rendered with.

    Videos are streamed when your opening them. The entire video doesnt need to be in ram at one time.

    With graphics its technically possible but it would be one nasty hack.
    Slow too.

    We are quite far away from that at the moment.

    E.g. Google is managing to index the net atm with their computing power.
    Face recognition, pattern matching and recording is slightly more processor intensive.

    If they did manage to do it I'm sure many of us would never be red flagged.
    First the filters would flag only a limited number (analogy with spam: filter the 100 worst spam in a day and let the others pass).
    This is because human operators would have to manually check every red flag. The humans would be able to filter the majority of those red flags out.
    Then it would probably go to their superiors.

    If I looked that suspicious that a computer algorithm and 2 (or more) humans thought that I was up to something I wouldnt mind being annoyed for a few hours if the system worked against the bad guys.

    FUD would be saying that Vista is the same speed as or faster than XP in the majority of everyday applications keeping all other variables constant. :P

    He is quoting PCPlus and your quoting C|Net. Why are you saying he is spreading fud?

    (IMHO I wont believe much about Vista benchmarks that I read about. With MS giving away laptops and probably other things you dont know who to trust.)

    I hardly think that allowing users to put Windows on their Mac is comparable to buying a HD movie online and then watching it at VHS quality.

    Apple is very good when it comes to freedom when compared to MS.

    Actually a black screen DOES make the MPAA money. Users only see the black screen AFTER they have paid.
