  1. Change your phone number(s) on Cutting Off an Over-Demanding End-User? · · Score: 1

    First, if you are really nice guy, just tell them you'll call them back whenever you have free to talk and just hang up. If they keep calling you, call your phone company to block that number. If this doesn't work, CHANGE YOUR PHONE NUMBER(s).

    Really, it works. Only contact people you want to be contacted and tell them not to give out your number. Also make sure your new number does not get forwarded by the old number directory service and have your new number unlisted by the phone company.

    If people start calling your work or emailing you, don't answer. If someone from the frontdesk at work give you a page that someone is looking for you, have them wait for hours. If all fails and someone does catch you, tell them you cannot talk right now and hang up (ABSOLUTELY NO "umm.. yeah, ok.. well... hmm ok..")

    Indirect message is more honest than saying anything about your situation directly because at the end, only "users" (the bad kind) don't know the fact that life doesn't evolve around their problems. And only inconsiderate fools are consistant at trying to fool you all the time.

    So far, I have not seen any comprehensive Desktop publishing tools on GNU/Linux so far. Majority of them are web server plugins/cgi/perl/php/java/python/etc. And by using a browser to do publishing, many useful functions are limited in many way.

    Same as for non-linear video editing tools for GNU/Linux, a limiting hurdle is the Desktop itself. Native Gnome apps runs unstable under KDE and KDE apps do not even run well in Gnome. It's painful for me to say it, but Cinelerra for Fedora Core with KDE just sucks and unstable, same goes for MainActor and Lives. Even Hydrogen can't sustain stably after few minutes of usage. This forces me to choose one Desktop over other just because of just one useful tool.

    I am not sure if anyone is having such painful experience, but few good advice on Cinelerra and Hydrogen on Fedora Core is welcome.

    "You don't get it. The whole damned point is that it shouldn't be illegal."

    Let me be the devil's advocate for a moment here. What you are saying is hypothetically speaking;

    It's wrong to put a copyright on a work one owns and sell for profit without giving up the rights to control the duplication of work (meaning, distribution).

    However you are saying, it's moral to do the following;
    Buying the copyrighted work from someone who controls the distribution right and then distributing illegal copies of that work with disregard to potential undisclosed amount of times the work may be reduplicated down the chain. And by doing so, stripping off the rights the original owner have which guarantees to sell and/or distribute.

    This doesn't seem right to me. Shouldn't all of us have at least "some" control over our own work? By no mean, I am not defending RIAAssholes, but your "immoral" stance doesn't go down easy on me.

    Here is my take on this issue, if you are too quick to judge my stance.

    I believe, original work copyright ownership should hold value on its own and carry the guarantee to owner the right to sell and/or distribute. However I don't believe in loyalty concept which one hit wonder or one good work carries out and hinders performance and further interpretation by means of imitation by others for years after years. Once the value of the work has reached to the level of sanity (for example, if the CD or work has been "legally" duplicated million_th times), it's only fair for that work to be absorbed by the public. There is something of common interest in public whom will obtain that work in our memory, heart and soul. It's inconceivable to think that one's work, a proprietary work, which has been duplicated, sold out, distributed and played out billionth times in public and/or in private, by millions of people, can be controlled and restricted. But more ridiculous to think that the work can only be profited and maintained by sole owner of the copyright. Why are we kidding ourselves? The obvious downfall of this idea is that limited supply and intentional under production of the work replication in order to increase the demand, therefore the value (IMMORAL!). However there are laws against such things. If the current laws are not adequate, why not push for making one to enforce such ideal? I think, that is moral thing to do.

    First, the concept is pretty cool. I'd imagine pretty good usage within LAN environment with dedicated web server(s) and managed environment. Since the road block is still the netaccess with RPC or XML feed on every write, this would make offline usage more painful and hassle with trouble prone. Centralized application in replacement over terminal application would make this favorable in my opinion.

    Second, desktop realestate. It's just not there. Too cluttered to be used in any useful fashion due to window frame max cap would be the limit of the browser being used. Even having the scroll bar ideally makes sense, but scroll bar themselves takes up realestate. But mostly the idea is to have a virtual desktop on top of already a Desktop makes it somewhat redudant.

    Third, related to my last statement, since the realestate is limited, on Windows Active Desktop or KDE HTML background, this would make a pretty neat widget. I would think, freeware application widgets running on desktop would make this pretty favorable toward end users instead of installing adwares or toolbar or other internetwares. For instance, Yahoo! Messanger, Gmail and RSS news feed applications come to mind.

    Fourth, centralized realtime data feed to workstations or one-to-many message broadcast data feed or VoIP PBX could make this very affordable and easy to implement for small to mid size business environment with HTML desktop on workstations. For instance, replacement of expensive digital phones and implement Ajax VoIP and internal paging over Acitve/HTML Desktops and let VoIP handle extensions by carriers or set up PBX internally.

    Fifth, remote application (not data) access over SSL. Alternative to VPN. Why not have private data private locally but use Ajax applications to present the data locally? If desired, let the sensitive data be sensitive with file encryption, but let the remote application control the key to unlock it and present the data.

    Can you really save "time"? or is it just another way of saying "even more things to do or not to do in given time"?

    So what if there is traffic? Sometimes delay caused by traffic is just another way the universe is trying to say, "slow down" to deal with overflux of commuters on the road which is natural occurance due to lack of mass transporation or lack of use of it.

    A wise physics professor once told me, travelling from point A to B is not just a matter of when, but how and why.

    If it makes any sense, next time when you are stuck in the traffic in the morning, turn on your radio to your favorite tune and start singing your lungs out. Or just take another longer route to work to avoid getting stuck in the traffic. That might make spending time little "easier", because better of us know deep inside that Time can never be saved.     Of course, there is always Oracle... Believe me, I think, Postgresql is great open source product, but if I decide to go notch upward on db from MySQL, I rather go all the way to Oracle or DB2 just because of this very issue.     No MySQL sessions are carried over from failed node, so all MySQL connections will be dropped and need to re-establish again. For sessionless Apache or other fast and short connections may make this very useful, but for application service with shared connection pool, a DNS RR with node check makes better choice rather than elaborate setup using lb nodes in front of MySQL cluster due to +2 lb nodes administration overhead. And also because of arp problem due to MAC on loopback broadcasting, the article forgets to mention;

    net.ipv4.conf.all.arp_announce = 2
    net.ipv4.conf.all.arp_ignore = 1

    Should take care of all interface arp announce/ignore. Doesn't need to set net.ipv4.conf.eth0.arp_ seperately as the article provides. Or easier way to control it is to set ARP=no on /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and ifcfg-lo:x

    Personally I rather have Active/Active lb nodes in front and carry over sessions from failed node to active node transparently by using shared memory space to replicate all session info. OpenMosix comes to mind.
