This was the cry of many editorials back in the 50's and 60's when the U.S. went to the moon.
But where would we be without Velcro or pens that can write upside down?!
Technical Support for dumbass L-Users who should have never bought a computer to begin with - is much more expensive. They tend to stay in the dialup plans because they can't justify the cost of broadband.
$10/month dialup plans exist for limited Internet usage. That's pretty cheap, and still gives you 10 hours / month for email and what not.
Broadband is cheap - but not going to get cheaper. You'll see speed increases before you'll see prices drop. Example, charter's kick to 3Meg service. My DSL company just shifted all plans up by 256/256 without increases in price. So now I'm getting 1M/1M for the price I used to pay for 768/768k - $45/month.
The 3 month deals are just a carrot - it's the big sharp stick that carrot is attached to that I worry about.
An instructor of mine pointed out that NIC Card is actually not redundant if used to describe the chip and the card it's located on.
Network Interface Controller Card
It still doesn't make hearing Nic Card any better...:(
>The goal is to produce music that the masses >will listen to, but that makes geeks and >audiophiles sick.
Too late, they've already done it. This would explain why music sales dropped through the floor when all the good bands stopped getting radio time, replaced with this garbage we have now.
I don't think it's a matter of education or knowledge... I think people to think it's a threat.
I liken WEP to locking your car doors. Sure you don't see a thief anywhere around - but locked doors keeps honest people honest.
Getting WiFi is now on par with a chrome gas grill when it means you're keeping up with the Joneses. And that's fine with me - I appreciate the free access - some are even faster than I have at home.
I enjoy the fact that most idiots have wifi encryption disabled and the defaults set. It makes my life easier when I'm biking or traveling with my laptop or ipaq.
Most residential and a lot of commercial areas give me free access to the internet - they may or may not know it, I don't really care.
I don't check my email or browse until I vpn into my home network. Just in case someone is sniffing packets - lets not make it that easy.
And the reason that Linksys and the rest of them don't enable it by default - tech support costs.
Humblest appologies to the/. community for my windowed reply.
But really - these cards will work with Linux variants with the right software. Really... searching for linux PVR software on Google.com worked for me, you should try it.
Uses your PC for the audio input, storage, compression, and display. The card takes care of the video in.
My Leadtek Win2000XP cost about $50 and has a remote control and good software. Nothing fancy, but it gets the job done.
It also includes (free) online guide for programing and scheduling recordings. No charge - something Tivo could learn from.
Visit Newegg.com and search for PVR.

He has a pretty good on air personality but he's not a talking head for a batch of researchers.
He does ask questions of the crew or bone up on information before he takes a call - that's just good sence.
He does a radio show on the weekends along the same lines as C4H - KFI-AM 640, and he's got a pretty good blog/website with information. And he also guests on a couple of main stream TV shows.
I think he's a good talent to have on any tech related channel - but Comcast lost them with the SF studio.

They fired the entire S.F. studio - and gave only a select few the option of moving to the G4TV studios in L.A.
Also the firestorm of hatemail, online petitions, and angery forum posts for Leo Laporte and Call for Help's demise I think really got G4 thinking "WTF do we do now?"
So they negotiated a few 90 second clips with Leo to be aired durring The Screen Savers. His face is on their homepage, twice. And they're looking at selling his show to another network.
Damn you Comcast and G4... now I have to answer even MORE noobish questions.

Ah, right - windows is a hard habit to kick, like cocaine... but causes more problems.
You are visitor number 1103.
Just let it load in a different window while you read the rest of the headlines. It'll open, it's just dreadfully slow.

I agree... where's the fuggin' torrent?!
the cell phone is just the CPE... it'll be streaming it to the HDTV mounted on the wall!
mobile ethernet would give my ISP a run for its money... I just got 1Mb!
