I have no sympathy whatsoever for this woman. Stealing is stealing. Period. If you want cheap music, go to lala.com. Stealing music and offering it up for others is criminal.
...as soon as every nation on the Internet returns our investment with interest on adjusted dollars. Then, I would have no problem with it for the most part.
Even if it was a wasted endeavor, it was probably the best wasted endeavor we have done in a long time. We have learned a lot from this "complex and inefficient solution". The world was not explored by the "safe" ones, but by the intentions and actions of daring ones.
When people state that a arguably successful endeavor was "was extremely aggressive and just barely possible", I have to wonder exactly what is behind the statement. The shuttle has been successful on a number of fronts, too many to list here. Yes, exploration is a dangerous business--an not just space exploration. You can always look back in history for dangerous expeditions and high casualty rates. Test pilots, famous historical exploration, modern-day exploration (in space, underwater, and caves), unnamed and unrecorded Viking, Chinese, Phoenician, Portuguese, and Polynesian explorers, etc. I am sure you can find many harrowing tales of death and suffering in the name of exploration. I am sure there are a number of tales of failed Colonial settlements which ended tragically.
It makes me wonder if we have lost our tolerance for casualties in the name of science and/or exploration. If it wasn't for seemingly foolhardy or impossible endeavors, would we have really learned anything of value?
It is really a damn shame that people do not have the integrity to tell authority when there is an apparent problem which may impact others or security. Instead of doing the right thing, the students decided to break the law. They have no defensible position. This society really is beneath contempt. Posts stating that it is the systems fault for poor individual (or group) decisions makes me emphasize to my own child how words like integrity, morality, humility, and responsibility are *not* just words in a dictionary. They are important on a personal level as well as in everyday choices which may come up. These students and their parents need to grow up. Obviously they have learned nothing in life but how to be a victim. "It is the systems fault, not ours. They should fix the system!" Bullshit.
It's funny, when I read slashdot (vaguely/possibly political) articles these days I do a search on the page to see how many people are posting about Bush. There is almost always one or more. I am about tired of everything being Bush's fault. You folks need a new mantra.
While I would rather not see more of the Microsoft monopoly. I do not like the fact that the government is sending my money to a foreign company when there is a perfectly viable American company selling competing software. Just my $0.02.
I love arguments where people say "I did it and I turned out alright." You may be a psychopathic killer that beats his wife. I dunno. Parents are not there 24/7. I watch what my kid buys, eats, how much he exercises, provide extra tutoring in subjects where he is lacking and excelling, watch his internet use, and try and guide him morally; even in the face of some jackass punk kid that wears a shirt that reads "Jesus is a Cunt." How exactly do I tell my kid about this idiot and her shirt, while at the same time explain the first amendment, try and explain the profane vernacular for a vagina, and how that relates to our deity. I really wanted to say something to that girl wearing the shirt, but she was probably off to a libshit meeting to vote Bush out of office. If the government wants to limit the distribution channels for adult or mature rated video games, I am for it.
There is absolutely no reason why a ten year old should be playing a game where one has sex with prostitutes, beats up people with ball bats, stereotypes homosexuals, and has to commit random killing to rack up points. My son isn't allowed to play these games, but his cousin is allowed. His cousin is eleven and bragged about knowing the method to have sex with girls in his vehicle. Nice. While my son is being considered for an advanced math class in his school or possibly skipping a grade, his cousin has already failed one grade and is having problems with his school work. Parents should be vigilant and work with their kids instead of hoping the government will pass laws that keep them from having to be a parent. But at the same time there is no reason a minor should be playing GTA. And before DeathPooky talks about chilling effects, what is more chilling: your kid not being able to purchase a mature video game, or your kid having the mouth of some some degenerate and manners to match? Grow up.
I am sick of you f*cking leftie slashdot folk. Damn. Yes, I want everyone who is on a plane to show ID and have that ID checked against a central database of "suspicious" people. If I see one f*ckng terrorist on a plane that I am aboard, I will take his damn head off with my shoe if I have to. F*CK M. MOORE and the leftie slashdotters.
It sometimes amazes me the bullshit that I read on a daily basis. Lately, there has been this odd reoccurrence in the media that has left me a bit aghast. It seems that the old fear of Orwell's (in the book 1984) was that jack-booted government thugs would come down and "re-educate" the masses who did not go along with their ideology. It was a common theme that has been analyzed repeatedly over the past 20 years.
But what is really amazing to me is the group responsible for the actual indoctrination and re-education of the masses. Twenty years ago, it was the government and some vast right-wing organization who were painted as the evil ones. But in reality it is the lefties and their hydra-like organizations. Just look at two instances of political correctness and the big-brother speak that flourishes:
CSULB students angered by flyer - In this instance, the students are to under go cultural sensitivity indoctrination. "...mandatory attendance for all organizations at the Cultural Awareness Fair."
Mascot Mishap - This is a similar instance of a politically correct "no-no". The people involved wiil be re-educated and shown the true meaning of happiness through being politically correct. "Members of the foundation agreed to...attend a sensitivity training session to learn about diversity."
It seems that if you don't think and act like the hive mind on the left...you are doomed to "re-education" and indoctrination of some sort. For those that do not follow these PC rules...you will be branded a harbinger of hate and a bigot.
Here is another example...
"At the conference, students in the college learned the importance of firm handshakes and direct eye contact when meeting with potential employers. When a student of color raised concerns that her culture does not encourage such interactions, a comment by Springfield school district's Director of Human Resources Roger Jordan was perceived to be culturally insensitive. Jordan said he had explained what he calls "the blemish effect," which is something that might distract a potential employer during the interviewing process, such as cultural differences. He said the meaning was misconstrued and that he did not intend to propose that the student's culture was a blemish."
I really don't get it. They are being taught how to conduct themselves in an interview and possibly land a job here in the States. They don't like the fact that what they are being taught does not jibe with their culture in their own country, so they take offense and are probably hyper-sensitive about the entire situation. Of course, the school will use the following tactics to "right any wrong" that was committed:
* The creation of a 5-year plan to address the issues; * standardized and enforced procedures for handling complaints; * and diversity training for staff and faculty.
I think that my biggest problem with the whole situation is that the school actually has a "Bias Response Team". Political correctness run amok. Common sense is missing in this whole situation and the diversity police (or the Bias Response Team, in this case) come to the rescue and mandate forced re-education. Lovely.
Some of you are missing a very basic point to media. The consumer rules. If they do not buy, watch, or listen...the media entity dies. And for all of you that say it is impossible to start an independent media venue for an audience...how about the Drudge Report? I know that he is looked down upon by the "big media" types...but he hangs in there and sticks it to 'em every single day. It may not be the best example in the world...but it works. Get out there and make your own media portal if you don't like the big media companies. I will check it out if it interests me.
I have posted it before and will probably post it again. I am really getting tired of the whole lefty political slant of Slashdot. I really just started reading it for tech news that was more than just personal computer based journalism./. has had news about just about every aspect of science and computing--I love the site for it. But this whole political bullshit thing is making me not want to even visit the site anymore. I can read CNN, Fox, MSNBC, Christian Science Monitor, Drudge, or Washington Post if I want political stuff. Most of the readers of this site are political ideologues anyway. What really annoys me is that/. posts politically slanted or baiting in the first place. I am tired of it.
He gives you tax relief, gives you an interest break, and you bitch about it? If you borrow money why should you get a break? I don't care what you spent it on. i don't care if it is on a house or a student loan. You shouldn't get a damn tax break for it. There should really be a flat tax in this country and a national sales tax. The bigger the debtor or consumer you are...the more you will pay in taxes. Live lean and don't spend beyond your means and you will be an asset to the economy instead of a deadbeat.
I have no sympathy whatsoever for this woman. Stealing is stealing. Period. If you want cheap music, go to lala.com. Stealing music and offering it up for others is criminal.
I am almost done with Slashdot. It has ceased to entertain and inform me. Digg is much better, IMHO. About one more month and I will cease to visit /.
Yes, you don't think.
I like GW. I voted for him twice--2000 and 2004.
Excellent post. That is probably the best explanation for the college I have read in a long while.
My god that is horrible. I am very sorry to hear about your struggle. Damn shame.

Actually it does have some compatibility with WMA. Maybe you should read the fine print a little better.

While I am sure it isn't exactly what you were looking for...it is fine for me. Your mileage may vary. Apple goodness.
What has this got to do with the topic? I am about sick of /. these days. More political crap being slung than on Slate.
Exactly, I paid my own way. Worked two jobs and paid for my education in cash. No loans, no debt.
