  1. Philadelphia on The Price Of Doing Business · · Score: 1

Same thing here in Philadelphia...just a little different slant. People who live OR work in Philadelphia have to pay a wage tax as high as 5 percent. It comes right outta your check. No ifs, ands, or buts. Many young techies (and not so young) have fled the city to the burbs, where new office parks rule. Why would anyone want to give Philly any of their cash when they live and pay taxes in another city? And for the folks that live in Philadelphia, why pay 5 percent when you are taxed to death on everything else? I live in Philly and think about moving every payday.

With all of the tech industries leaving the city, Philadelphia is rapidly becoming a tech dead zone.

While you have some of the facts correct in this depiction of the op in Somalia. You miss a few primary points that you would not know as an armchair general. I was a Marine who was in Somalia before the Ranger op depicted in the movie. The warlords were killing all kinds of folks for the goods that were being delivered by NATO forces. We were not allowed to engage these factions for fear of exactly what happened. The ONLY responsibility that (former) President Bush had with this op was the commitment of US military personnel to NATO obligations around the world. President Clinton -- the commander and Chief of US Armed Forces -- in all of his foresight, decided not to bring enough firepower into the op. No armor, no heavy gun ships, no "standard" troops that are prepared for sustained combat. His liberal ass didn't want the force to look like a "military" op...but a humanitarian one. Rangers and other special forces are just that..."special forces". They do not fight prolonged and sustained battles on a large scale. That is what "regular" army or Marines do. That is the mission of the Army and Marines.

When Clinton decided to rely on Pakistani armor and limited air support that was his first big fucking mistake. I don't care what the mission is...you come strong or don't come at all. It was his lack of leadership and poor choices as a commander that lead to these Rangers and Operators to lose their lives on CNN. When I was in the Marines, we always said that he wasn't our president. Now all the liberals who voted for Gore say that Bush isn't their president. How ironic. I guess that the folks that do the fighting know a little more about who a better president would be...at least, in a military defensive point of view.

After the Rangers and Operators were pulled out of Somalia, the Marines mopped up the existing exit and we haven't had a large military occupation since. Mostly due to civil war, Islamic factions, terrorists, etc.

The melodrama that was the movie was a little over the top. But it was close to "actual" in a mission sense. There were a lot more skinnys killed. But that is what you get when you pick up a fucking AK-47...you become a combatant and become a target. The movie was not bullshit. I don't care about the politics... All I know is that Clinton fucked up big time and his administration will never admit it. Nor any other liberals that thinks they know what the military is like.

Being in the Marines for 6 years...I know the effect that Clinton had on the armed services. The armed forces are for combat -- not to look good on CNN. He never did have a clue as to how to build a "force in readiness". He was a fucked up commander and brought the services to a new low in ability. It will take the new president's entire term and BILLIONS of dollars to get the services up to par.

So is the movie "bullshit"? Not really. We should have killed every weapon carrying SOB there. Now we will have to go back and do it again in the near future. You really know nothing of the status of the military and the effect that Clinton had on it and the defense of the United States.

  5. Cool Display of Power on OS X Vs. Linux On The Desktop · · Score: 1

I had really wanted to learn about Linux and install it on one of my Macs at home (or work). I bought a distribution of LinuxPPC and found it "doable"...but a little daunting. This was not a newbie's typical OS. It is even fussier than Windows, I had said to myself more than a few times. It was just so unfriendly.

Along comes OS X. I didn't have the hardware to run it but on my family machine...so I bought a laptop to check it out. This is what I am typing on now. I found it to bea dream. In about 1 month with OS X, I was able to upgrade the installed Apache, install mySQL, and install PHP. Everything was running like a dream. I am very happy that Steve Jobs introduced this OS. As for peripherals...Apple has for A LONG TIME said that they are moving away from legacy devices. USB and Fireware are "it". Leave SCSI in the closet. I saw the writing on the wall and when moved over to USB and Firewire on all upgrades.

One last note...my wife and son insisted that I install OS X on their iMac. To my surprise, my son was using the terminal window last night. He is only 8 years old. When I asked him how he learned of this...he replied the help in the menu bar. I was floored! Of course, he asked a million questions....and I answered all that I could.

So if a person wants to know a little (or a lot) about some Unix flavored OS...then I would be happy to direct them to OS X.

I think I am a little browner than a whole lotta folks. Race played no part in my joining the Marines nor played any part in doing what I was ordered. It didn't play into with most of the other Marines I served with either... They were of Chinese, Mexican, Puerto Rican, African, Irish, Indian, Native American, etc descent. They were the finest people I have ever known. They would be willing to give their life for your ability to have free speech and live in a free country. That is, if you are an American. If someone destroys 6000 Americans...I believe that I can call them my enemy with extreme prejudice. Your religion may say that peace is the only way...and I respect that. But I hope that our leaders will not silently stand by when 6000 Americans are killed because of our position to be friendly with Israel. They have another thing coming... You can talk a lot of crap about spiritual and moral order...but wait until you are looking down the barrel of a gun held by a terrorist or aggressor. You will change your tune. This is pointless and falling on deaf ears...but maybe the actions by the few (the people in the service and government) will allow you to keep your high moral stand in that Ivory tower.

Tyrants rise and fall, criminals who run terrorist organizations torture and kill people who stand in their way, and Islamic zealots see the world as theirs. Make no mistake...this is as much a religious war (to the zealots) as it is a terror war to the US. To put our head in the sand and say nothing is stupidity. I have seen terrorism first hand in Thailand, Southeast and Southwest Asia, and the US. You're abstract view of how things should be are just that...abstract and not reality. The terrorists are cunning, lethal, and committed. It was sheer brilliance to use jumbo jets against targets in the US. They don't have the resources to wage war...so they steal it. That is power.... The power of command line and the simplicity of Mac...I am happy. Just because you want Quicktime and Darwin on Intel...doesn't mean it's going to happen. Every week, I read where Apple is done for...either financially or through market share. ZDNet is one of those doomsayers. If they tried to be everything to everyone...they wouldn't make a penny. And they wouldn't turn a profit for the people who really count...the stockholders. They owe money to the stockholders and owe them a money-winning strategy. Apple is doing a world of good for BSD. They are doing a world of good for the open-source movement...oin regards to Darwin. Quicktime probably isn't the cash-cow they would hope that it should be. It is a very excellent player...and does some nice stuff with the OS. ...that doesn't mean they have the funds to move it over. Become a shareholder...convince them otherwise. Or, better yet. do something with Darwin yourself.

I have a G3 "Pismo" Powerbook, 320 MB RAM, and a 10 GB HD. The RAM helps; I am sure. But RAM helps everything. I wiped the drive of my PB and installed 9.1 on a single partition, then installed OS X on the same partition. IT JUST WORKED! 20 minutes to install OS 9 and X. It has not crashed...all of the apps work just as advertised AND I set up my internet connection (PPPoe) in about 2 minutes.

Maybe if you can explain your assumptions a little better...people could use your scenarios to help iron out their systems or avoid problems entirely.

As for the "selling a BETA" pout...I was happy to pay for it. If you don't want to pay...don't buy it. America is a democratic republic...you don't have to purchase anything you don't want. Or if you are an ass, you can go and steal a copy of the beta or release off of #macfilez or something. You could have used this little forum to elaborate "constructively" about the problems you are experiencing...but you did not.
