It frightens me that you think Iraq was distroyed. It scares me that you think the US benefits in oil as opposed to France, Russia, and the UN's Oil for Palaces program.

"For the first time in my life, within 4 weeks of one another, my sister lost her job, my friend lost his job, and his wife lost her job."
Odd... My section of programmers has almost doubled (from 9 to 17 people) since Bush and we need more. And we have trouble finding peeps even thought we're in Monsters.com. It reminds me of how annoying the sig I've seen, paraphraising, "All I know is I had a job before Bush was in office." I'm not a huge fan of him but I know people who got great paying jobs while Bush was in office. And I know peeps that lost their jobs durning Clinton and, especially Carter. What is the point of using a 3 person poll as a bases for anything?
It's like when I was looking for a house and had "broadband access" near the top of my list. My non-geek friends laughed themselves silly about this but I wasn't in on the joke. They have kids so their first criteria was schools, neighborhood, and such.
For me, it's the point of "how do you get movie info, tv listings, dictionary, political scoop, phonebook entries, asymetrical comm, product info, latest music/movie releases, and so on, and so on." That's excluding all the info I need for the latest programming techniques and trends. For non-onliners, the dozen different sources for info works. For me the net is a one stop info source. I don't understand them and they don't understnad me.
Sure, the net has its pr0n and time wasters. But it's a tool that can be used for good and evil. To call it an addiction is like saying a hammer is an addiction to a serial killer who uses it to kill. It's not like smoking or crack with no positive use. It's like the hammer that can kill or hammer a nail.
Battery life. It's time to stop the madness. I'm not pulling the misquoted "640k should be enough for everyone" but 320x320 is serving me well. I would much prefer the current resolutions and better battery life than 300ppi, better camera, etc. Everything should have it's purpose and and a PDA is not a computer. If you can't have a portable (read small and better that 3 hours run time) PDA, then it has no use in my pocket.
"Some (censored) google is better than no google."
Is it? Extreme examples would be if all your news was came from M.Moore or Fox News. Being without news is something tangible. You can revolt against the obvious lack of information and clearly say "this is wrong." Censored news is less clear because you don't know what you're not seeing. It could be for your own good but it could be to suppress government screwups.
In the previous/. article, someone mentioned you can get a printed version at [URL:http://www.cafeshops.com/springfieldmap.11405 897] but it no longer seems available.
We will never have a solution if we limit the companies to: None of your members have donated to any political party. To point out one individual does not a conspiracy make... even if you limit it to management. People donate but that doesn't make them capable of a crime. Just because I want X to win doesn't mean I'll break the law and try to register Snowball III to vote for him/her.
To affect a crime like this would take a lot of peeps. Anyone who is remotely aware, from programmers to the CEO would have to want the same outcome and be willing to commit a crime. I'm not saying it can't be done but it seems a little early for the tin-foil hats.

To oppose an act does not mean they want the opposite of the title to happen. The title is one thing and the body is another. Perhaps (and this is just speculation) they oppose how the act tries to accomplish the title. What if it says "if you own property and a single endangered fungus is found, you you can't build anything?" Or they oppose the riders on the act.
Additionally (and I hate to get a little "After School Special" in some of these):
1. If at all possible, take a public speaking class. It is a very important ability and one that few people have.
2. You don't have to kiss ass but just be cool to the secretaries and advisors. They know the system.
3. Don't get too deep into any clique. Try to interface with as many people with different views as possible.
4. As Chef said: "There's a time and place for everything, and it's called, 'College.'" But I would add "in moderation."
5. Situational awareness is key to a good time and healthy life. Know where you're at, who you can count on in case of trouble, and how to get "home."
6. Look out for your your buds... even if it means you have to piss them off and tell them they're being idiots.
You are correct. The US and other countries have backed the wrong side on numerous occasions. Either because of stupidity or the the "enemy of my enemy" schtick. I think this is different because we're not so much backing a side but trying to change a government from terrorist and oppressive to democratic and free.
As you say, time will tell if it is right. But, to get back to what I was responding to, solders can see the changes now and probably believe it is waht they would want if their country was like Iraq.
This is a very odd election. I have life long republican friends voting for Kerry. And life long liberal friends, who wouldn't even vote for Reagan, voting for Bush.
"What makes you think your average soldier has any clue what the long-term financial or political ramifications of foreign policy will be?"
When has it been a requirement to be an expert in order to have an opinion or to vote? If that's the case then it's time to shut down/.
Maybe the soldiers have a better view because they see, first hand, all the rape rooms, torture chambers, and mass graves being dismantled. Or they're cataloging the videos and paperwork of rapes, torture, and atrocities. Or they're helping rebuild the thousands of facilities like schools, courts, and police stations. Or setting up operations out of palaces built with the oil for food program.
I'm not a historian, economist, or a political science expert but I think Iraq is better off. It'll be better when the thugs (who are pissed because we took away their rape rooms) are under control. And better still when other thugs back off... the ones who don't want a free Iraq because they want to subjugate their own people.
