doesn't the open source driver do opengl 2 on those cards that support it? The catalyst driver does use less power hower, but then, perhaps that is because only opengl 1 is send to it with linux:-)

For the samba issue, dragonplayer and vlc have that, I use kaffeine now, and play from a samba share starts immediately. In other words, it's related to the app you use. Do which I found a good upnp client app though, then I could skip even browsing the samba share.
Played with Win 7 and Mac OS X last week. Whatever ideas I maintained to get a laptop with one of those are gone now. The hoops I'd have to jump through to make it do what I need it to do are far too frustrating.

If you don't need cutting edge graphics, give Intel Graphics a go. The drivers are free software -> distributors are permitted to integrate them properly -> installation is a breeze.
The fact is they switched. What other evidence do you need? If it was just a problem with the programming language, then they would not need to change OS. If it was just because Windows is too expensive, they would run CentOS.
And, so far, apart from "it's real Linux" (which is a major feature for geeks only), I don't see what sets MeeGo apart from existing solutions. Especially from Android.
What sets it apart is that you can reuse existing libraries. Yes, the UI must be different, but I have to write only one core, and then some different graphical shells. If you ever programmed more than a simple app, then you know much complexity is outside of the UI code.
It is cheating if you have an OS monopoly and a browser that a very large piece of the internet-users use, while Yahoo and Ask,.... don't have that advantage.
At a minimum they should add a "provided by google" after the link:-D
Hence, they are close too announcing a product. All current Qt apps from Symbian will work on it, so if people are happy with their current Symbian phones, they should be all go.
They are sitting on a nice product, let's just hope they can deliver. Sounds from Intel are such to indicate we can expect phones/tablets Q2 2011 ( http://www.cio.co.uk/news/3258820/intels-meego-os-to-start-shipping-tablets-and-netbooks/ ). Don't forget the first thing the new CEO said was not to communicate about devices before they where actually ready to almost ship. So do things the Apple way when it comes to devices. That is a good strategy.
