Expect a lot of wailing and gnashing-of-teeth from the government, proposals to make this or that protocol "illegal" or to require government backdoor access...
There was a classic example of "Think of the terrorists" FUD in NZ last week. The PM of New Zealand, who's cramming his legalized-spying-on-your-own-citizens bill through parliament at the moment, last week trotted out some "facts" about how the NZ government is "monitoring" several NZ residents with ties to Al Queda, several of which are in Yemen attending "training camps" at the moment.
If that's true, then isn't letting these people know you're watching them a bit of a silly idea? And anyhow, it still doesn't justify eroding our rights. Is it election year yet?
You teach NoScript which sites you allow scripts to run on, or use the "allow this time" option. It takes a few weeks for it to learn your trusted sites, but once you get in the habit of clicking "allow this time" for one-off visits, it becomes second nature. As is frequently the case, there's a trade-off between usability and security.
NoScript is invaluable when you access a site that's been compromised and is directly serving malware via scripts.
For sites you have allowed in NoScript, filter out marketing-scum-ware with Ghostery and AdBlock. Security is like an Ogre, it has layers. Defense in depth!
So if you were to view a selection of e-David drawn pictures mixed in images drawn by human artists, with no prior knowledge, how would you differentiate them? Isn't art in the eye of the beholder?
Then drop him a line and collaborate on something that is "better". It works for him, so what's the big deal? Honestly, I'm having a hard time getting the nerd-hate this article is garnering.
Actually, if you'd read TFA you'd have come across the text saying "In the screenshot above, the dish is aimed at GOES 3 and has just been ordered to aim at Voyager 1"
So let me get this straight. You've just publicly called this guy a liar, based on what - did the Force tell you he's full of shit? You bet he can't see the carrier at all? OK, email the guy and make a wager - put your money where your cynical mouth is.
This guy did something geeky and cool. It's not a new idea, but he's been good enough to blog some details of his interesting implementation that expands on what others have done before, only to have some asshole on/. call BS with zero justification. How the fuck did a snarky, dismissive post like this get modded up?
There's a couple of vendors (and many more playing catch-up) selling appliances that detonate attachments on sandboxed VMs running in fast virtual memory. They executed/open attachments and watch to see what happens - registry changes, file drops, network activity, attempts to contact known C&C servers, etc. Anything that exhibits non-legit behavior get quarantined. FireEye have a box that does this and also crawls network shares, testing files.
Aside from whitelisting, I think it's the best defense against zero day malware. It's a little too pricy for the company I work at right now, but as more vendors add this functionality, the price will come down.
Look on the bright side.
When a laser's being directed at your plane's canopy, every side is the bright side.
Could we build it? Sure, but I'd rather hold out for a Ring World.
Unless someone invents an exotic form of matter with the tensile strength of skrith, then you'll be waiting a long time.
I'd love to see activists "recycle' some iron oxide and aluminum powder in these fuckers.
I'm about ready for some real action in response to the marketing-scum and paranoid guberments sweeping away our right to privacy *frowns*

Who in their right mind would have thought that SkyDrive infringed on British Sky Broadcasting Group?

Don't forget noscript. Very nice to have when you stumble across a compromised site directly serving malware.
Nice - funniest comment I've seen all week :-)
Yeah, stop wasting money on research. This stuff never pans out, so lets stop trying.
Correct, but surely this would be more efficient than wasting delta-V by carrying your fuel with you?

If AC was ever more fitting a nom de guerre for a post, I've yet to see it.
I want sites blocked telling people actively to be violent.
But no-one likes a passive aggressive!
Cool - sorry I took your post the wrong way - I was a little pissed at the level of meh this story was generating...
Fuck off, Eric Schmidt

Hmm, must have a word with the wife
For some reason I read TFA, and that's number 4
"Veteran network admin trait No. 4: Believe it or not, we've tried turning it off and back on again"
