  1. Television Production Collaboration on Other Uses for Wiki Software? · · Score: 1

I setup a wiki (mediawiki) for the TV Program, 3D: Dialogue, that I host on OMNI TV. The producers use the wiki to store info on guests, topics, shows, research, overviews, factoids, and the script. It makes it a lot easier for the shows to be produced and have all the necessary info available to the people who need it. The G4Tech TV show http://www.g4techtv.ca/callforhelp/>Call for Help in the same studio as my show, and they also use a wiki to produce their show.

I think I will spend math awareness month counting. I've never tried to count as high as I could. I could keep a tally each night before sleep. Spend the month trying to count to however high a number as possible...

We employ developers who work on various open source projects as well as contribute back to the open source projects we help support. While it may be possible for some other company to have a parasitic relationship to open source, we actively choose to do the opposite.

  5. From each via ability to each via need on What Do You Charge for Tech Support? · · Score: 1

The intial premise is that those of us with advanced computer literacies have a responsibility to help out those who do not so as to expand the benefits of the technology to as many as possible. It goes without saying that if we provide our labour we should be appropriately remunerated. Generally speaking I charge people what they are willing to pay. If they are not willing to pay enough for me to meet my costs, then the next step is barter. If they have nothing to barter, then I try to find them someone who's needs are less then my own, and can essentially work for free. Usually this means younger people living with their parents and in search of experience.

  6. jumbo jets vs regional ones on Airbus Launches 800 Passenger Jumbo Jet · · Score: 3, Insightful

The trend towards super duper jumbo jets comes at the expense of the smaller regional jets which were all the rage 5 to 10 years ago. Companies like Bombardier and Embraer have run into trouble selling their small and mid sized jets as the airline market in general has tanked post 9-11. The only real growth area of the airplane manufacturing business is these jumbo jets, as their sheer volume (with the 555 seats) allows them to keep individual prices lower given the cut-throat pricing that discount airlines can provide. The moral for the consumer is that the quality of air travel will continue to decline. I personally prefer to fly in a small jet where I can feel less like cattle, screened, and herded into these flying apartment buildings that rather than afford greater space just pack in more and more people so as to struggle to make a profit in what is essentially a state-subsidised market in crisis... :P

  7. CBC and Free / Open Source Software on CBC Opens ZeD.cbc.ca Code · · Score: 5, Informative

The CBC (a Canadian Crown Corporation) is a large media organization with diverse interests and actors. Internally it is divided into three distinct branches: Television, Radio, and New Media. While there is no official "pro open source" policy at the CBC, there are large numbers of us who promote open source at every opportunity.

Zed is based in Vancouver and is somewhat independent from the core of CBC's new media efforts, and as a result have had the freedom to do what they've done re: build and release an open source app. Unfortunately a great deal of the cbc.ca content system is based upon microsoft .asp and the funds and will do not seem to be present to follow the model of zed in embracing free and open source software. With that said, cbc.ca does use apache/linux servers from akami...

The next step as others have noted would be for the CBC to join the BBC wrt codec development.

  8. ssh and silc via blackberry on Conspiring Against Your Employer? Watch What You Email · · Score: 2, Interesting

It is quite silly to think that Email is secure in today's day and age, however what none of these bankers considered was using ssh and then say something like silc to have a secure conversation. Most large institutions with RIM have the BES and thus using ssh is an option. which is certainly more secure than email, but is it totally secure? Or still prone to eavesdropping?
