Maybe it's just my insane logic problems here but maybe you could oh.. I don't know.. close it? Why do you need a browser open constantly for months on end? If you're not using it nuke the program and it'll nuke the foot print too.
There is more than enough content to fill out an entire channel with games content. Look at how many leagues and matchs go on every week with just FPSes. Cover these, infact Game-network in the UK used to cover the major TFC tournaments, I'd happily sit and watch them, it was like a geek's sports channel when they did that.
We have 30-40 years of history worth listening to. Why can't they do content covering the past? What about old game series like Dizzy? Why not do a documentry based on him and his many adventures.
There is more than enough content for a games only channel, the problem is it requires you to think about things and not just do the obvious. Many people make music videos of their games and post them to places like Youtube, why not get these sort of things put on the air?
How about covering the guild wars play offs and showing the best PvP matchs in the top tier clans of the last week for an hour or so?
We live in an era where games are like sports, we could have an entire channel dedicated to nothing but a 24 hour CS server, using interactive TV we could follow any damn player we wanted. If people will watch crpa like big brother why can't we do this shit with CS:S or HL2:DM?
Just because you can't think of anything worth while doesn't mean it's not possible for others.
Not to insult you but she really isn't very good looking. She's slightly below average IMO
As for your rant on stick figure women, well everyone has a weight their body is comftable at, some people it's over weight, some it's under. If you stick to that your body will run at it's best, where as if you fight against it (stick figures) you'll end up very ill and suffer from it.
Give it time and natural selection will nuke the shallow stick girls.
I hope they don't make them so you can't damage them, I think one of the highlights of ingame advertising is if they allowed you to defile it. Take the McDonald's logo and turn it into a giant pair of eyes of a guy peering over a wall for example. It'd be something intresting and would make me look at it to see what people did to trash it.
If companies make something untouchable we'll ignore it, if we can play around with it and have some fun then we'll do so and draw people's attenction to it. Yet I know they won't do this because companies will whine if the full advert isn't shown 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
Maybe one day someone will release a Jet Set Radio MMORPG and they'll let us spray whatever we like and generally have fun just kicking around to cool music. That's the sort of game advertising would work for, but again as I said above companies don't care what works, they use the shotgun effect instead.
Because if both companies got together and fixed the amounts it would be illegal. remember companies arn't allowed to fix sizes or prices between them.

Or maybe people are all different and that's what YOU want.
I used to be pretty damn good at TFC and would play on a server for hours daily. We had friendly rivalries and stuff, but the most fun I ever had out of it was just a bunch of us pissing around and having a giggle. Or using Chicken mod on maps like Rock2. There was just so many cool things to do rather than play it as a twitch fest.
Also I'd rather put hours into a good single player game and enjoy "The world" and universe it's set in than play the same maps over and over. The same reason I enjoy MMORPGs and RPGs applies to HL2. I enjoyed exploring City 17 and the world around it, getting to do little things like throw cans at combine, not running around killing the same modeled characters on the same maps over and over.
Just because you enjoy ultra competive blood sports style games doesn't mean there isn't a market for people who just want to wander around and kickass when the plot requires it.
Indeed:P I've been a modeler for 10 years now and Gundam for 5-6. They make kits for even the smallest children (SD kits) right up to insanely high levels (resin kits and such). If you wanted to you could even look into painting them and using tools and such and get him into modeling. It's one of those great outlets which give you time to think but still give you a reward (a nice shiny model) at the end of it. Not to mention when he gets older theres always stuff like installing LEDs for eyes/visors etc. and even scratch building, which are simple projects or as complex as you decide to make them, but arn't too expensive or dangerous for say a 8-10 year old.
My e-mails Mikari@gmail.com. If you want to drop me a line I'll be happy to help if you decide to go this route. Some of the older kits arn't so kid friendly, but anything recent (say the last 10 years) is usually build out the box with no glue or paint, so if you're unsure drop me an e-mail and a link and I'll get you up to speed on the kit if you're unsure if it's a bit beyond him yet.
IF you want something simple for him to try out try something like a High grade universal century (HGUC) GM or Zaku II kit. They're both basic staples of the series with simple designs easy to build but still look good out of the box. Theres no real fiddlely bits in either kit and it should go together in half an hour-an hour if it's just clipped/cut (mummy may want to do this for him) off the sprue and then slotted together. Working from the feet up means it'll fall into place perfectly and no frustrating when you realiize you have to take apart a leg as you forgot the foot joint:P
Kris you were looking for things for your son to build robot based. Are you still?
Did you ever looking at the Gundam series model kits? The high grade kits are great for kids ( http://www.hlj.com/product/BAN919249 example Freedom Gundam here or even the Super deformed kits could be fun and are very simple) or if he's intrested in something a bit more "sink my teeth into" style, theres always the Master grade kits (http://www.hlj.com/product/BAN938412). First you build the skeleton then you build up the armour and such, High grade kits lack the skeleton and are hollow inside). Plus they're not too expensive (you were willing to pay $500 for a toy earlier I saw:P ) and they give very nice working concepts of how a robot would work.
The other upside is they don't need paint and snap together. Put the stickers on for the eyes and he's also got a toy as posable as any action figure.
Could be worth looking into if he's into robots (like myself) and the great thing is the instructions are all pictured and easily labeled so the fact that they're Japanese models makes no difference. The only problem might be is he's probably a bit young to follow the plot of a series (quite a bit of political junk going on), but if you live some where like Canada Gundam should be easily avaible and entertain him with giant robots shooting each other to boot.
What I mean is if the scale balanced more, I doubt 10% of the people here are women and most of them are beyond your average attenction whore. Where as most girls on MySpace (or at least a large percent) are rather.... looser in their taste in men and putting out.
No offence ment to the slashdot ladies, but it's not exactly like you flaunt yourselvs around with semi naked pictures and intrests involving "Sex, music and movies!!!!!" like they do there is it?
If a bank goes down you have major problems, if a social networking site goes down someone might not be able to reply to a message and misses a night getting drunk. You have to remember these arn't the same type of things and so majorly backing up MySpace isn't going to do MySpace any real favours. Where as a bank it's basic common sense.
Remember when Livejournal went down? It didn't make a jot of difference now several months later.
Well done Hemos, you just gave everyone another chance to slag off MySpace. People need to remember that just because something isn't for them (we have our blogs people), that is isn't instantly lame. Sure the web designs suck and 90% of the people there are guys just out for vaginal offering (like slashdot would be any different if it had women).
Just remember, not everyone has the same values as Slashdot. A lot of the people on MySpace don't care if it's ugly or poorly written because they're having fun. Now as much as we geeks like to claim to be superior to everything short of the pope riding a giant panda, we need to learn to accept others values even if we don't take them.
MySpace's subtitle should be "The social person's easy-blog" and maybe geeks here would grasp it's name better, but wouldn't that be dumbing it down so a geek would understand it? Hmmm....
Maybe it's that way so it'll trick these evil people tracking them. I mean with a name like Hacktivist weapon it's got to be super complex so they can't give out documentation incase it gets cracked because of it!
Yes it sounds silly, but these guys seem to be in lala land so I'm guessing that maybe their excuse.
Is it just me or is anyone else wondering if these people get paid to be stupid?
We play games because they're funn, filling out form 54B is NOT fun and hence we do it purely so we can eat. This is the same logic that things playing some dumbass kids game with your work mates will make the work place happier, when in truth if they gave you the day off and let you get some rest it would have 10 times the effect.
You forgot it also allows people who missed the first topic to continue the discussion and still see their posts modded.
One problem with Slashdot is after a few hours no one mods a story, so if they can make it fresh again 24 hours later we get fresh modding and debate continues beyond the usual level.
As I recall there was a MMOFPS (is that even a term?). It went to hell because people would just camp spawns, but it wasn't like 1 v 1 here, it was hundreds V one. Also remember pings matter in FPS, so huge servers are going to give high pings and hence the hardcore FPS players won't play.
WoW is honestly popular because it's the most common simple and pretty looking MMORPG there is. It's not original or even that note worthy, it just took everything and gave it a Blizzard spin (aka made it glossy) and that's it. People assume the best will win, but the games market is full of fanboys, so the best will very rarely truely win, where as peer pressure in MMORPGs almost always will.
You act like because it's not happening in the real world we can't have fun times for it. I can still remember how beautiful some sights in Guild wars are, like the catacombs where you see the bridge over the ledge or where you enter the underwater springs. I had fun seeing these while playing. Does that make it any less fun than you had?
I can remember all the way back to being 5-6 and playing Flimbo's quest and how freaked I'd get at a giant snale (oohh scary you say, but back then giant snales were like Gozilla on crack). I can remember how cool Secret of mana was the first time through, or they giddy enjoyment when you some how manage to skip away from the enemy team in a capture the flag game with like 5 HP left.
I remember lots of things like this and I had fun doing them. Playing games is no different to watching a film except you control it. Just because it's a game doesn't make it any less real than playing football outside. It's just different choices for different people.
You also assume WoW couldn't find you a girl, there are quite a few people who have matched up through it, but from the way your post reads you seem to have a "I'am holy than thou because I'm trying" attitude, where as there are some people who don't want nor care for a relationship. Just because you're choices have lead you to that path doesn't mean you're any better than me or anyone else who chooses to use our free time to enjoy ourselvs (which could be anything from games to reading books considering this is slashdot).
Maybe before you look down on people you should look at yourself and go "I have a personality which makes me addicted to things easily, I need to correct this or live my life avoiding everything remotely fun incase I get too addicted to it".
What I see is it starts at Web 2.0/search 2.0 and the more options they have the quicker it becomes a mess. So far everyone whos said buzz words like Web 2.0 has been in it for the money and trying to get some PR up, they don't understand jack and will become the next "lol, we didnt know it was a virus in the ads lol!" type mess.
Maybe I'm just a bit too negative, but I don't see how these search engines wont die out quickly and just be fads untill then. Because if they ever got big they'd be ad filled wastes of time.
You also forget the culture around guns is different in many countries. I've grown up around shotguns and rifles ment for countryside sports, I've seen my fair share of animals with holes in them and so I know what a gun really does when you fire it. Hollywood and shooting at targets is all fine and dandy, but it doesn't show you how easily a gun really kills and what it can do to someone.
So to me a firearm is only ever pointed if you intend to use it, I'd never raise a gun loaded or not at someone unless I honestly ment to use it, I suspect most people in this country (unless complete idiots) would also feel the same way. Where as in America it seems to be more "hey lets go have a few beers, kill a deer and boast about it", more than "safety comes first, alchol and firearms dont mix".
Move along nothing to see here. People don't want flash based 2.0 web searchs, they want to use a search engine as a spring board. You hop on and 2 clicks later you hop off to your location. When you start adding an interface beyond basic input and 12 million adverts around it (hello yahoo), you lose the entire point of using a search engine to find what you want quickly.
Keep it clean and keep it simple, that's all you need for a good interface in most cases.
Mana would make a terrible MMORPG though, the game focuses on 1-2 heroes saving the world using the mana sword, or at very most a very small group (Mana knights). Removing these elements and making it a MMORPG would spoil the world it's self.
What square did best was a generic RPG line to make money and then make awesome spin off games. Saddly spin offs from the FF line seem rarer and rarer these days when they're the best part.
Also the next MMORPG should be based on Crystal chronicles, there isn't anyone alive who could tell me CC wouldn't make for an original MMORPG with some intresting elements like having each race focus on different goals. For example you could use people who keep the roads clear and safe for caravans, you'd have to travel the land and fight off any monsters who try to ambush caravans and such.
PvP could be about robbing caravans if they wanted it too. Would make an intresting way to play if nothing else.
There is already a set of 10 jobs with different skills linked to them in the CC world. All they have to do is expand on these jobs and make it possible for people to use them and have it be fun.
Hell it could be the next Star wars galaxy (pre screwing) and it would have cute characters to appeal to the old school fans/teenage girls alike!
I'd be willing to bet 99% of Americans have never met a French person. In my exprience they're very nice people.
Of course there's good and bad in all, but in general I don't think theres anything wrong with the French which is a pissing contest betweem two nations who both want to claim to be the best in the world.
Maybe it's just my insane logic problems here but maybe you could oh.. I don't know.. close it? Why do you need a browser open constantly for months on end? If you're not using it nuke the program and it'll nuke the foot print too.
