    Windows development was completed with XP. Since then Microsoft have been looking for reasons for people to upgrade. Before XP the next release was always better than the last.

    Though Gizmodo did return the phone when asked. Lets assume they didn't know who owned it. They publish their find on their site. The owner claims the phone and they return it. Apple have their phone back. Maybe it was returned promptly enough for the law to be satisfied.

    IAASIE (I am a space instrumentation engineer) and I really find such a major last minute decision hard to believe, seeing how long and detailed the flight model / integration tests are...

    Maybe they are actually swapping one validated unit for a different validated unit.

    I take it you are fine with airliners flying without seatbelts and emergency oxygen to save money? In the event of a crash passengers will be free to choose a more expensive airline when they fly again.

    And to go along with your post, the British Airways flight was about 100 miles from the volcano, and all 4 engines started up again after they were out of the ash. One of them failed again, but they were able to make it safely to an airport on their own power rather than strictly gliding.

    That's great for 4-engine planes like the 747, A340 and A380. What about the twin-engines used for shorter-haul flights?

    The Boeing 777 is a long haul two engined aircraft. And yeah, you would be mad to fly it through volcanic ash.

    The reason for the failure was not immediately apparent to the crew or ground control.

    Interesting. The crew had no idea they were in an ash cloud. From close up it is presumably invisible.

    The good part? A nice fraction of these devices run Linux, so theoretically ISPs could do bounties for third party IPv6 capable firmwares. I for one am available for such a task.

    So what do the rest run? My impression has long been that consumer level routers generally have linux or netbsd inside.

    But the infrastructure has to change over. Servers and clients still have to be able to reach each other. Its a bit like one country which recently changed from driving on the left to driving on the right. Everybody had to change at the same time.

    Everyone knows the more modern type of tube uses photons, not electrons, since photons don't follow the pauli exclusion principle you can fit a bunch more of them in the tube at once, that's why fiber is faster than coax.

    Yes but they do tend to heat up the tube because energy dispersion scales with the density of photons.

    But HTC also sell Android phones. My wife thinks her HTC Magic is a fantastic phone. I don't see her going back to Nokia any time soon. So yes, HTC can drop WinMo but android will be the winner there.

    Wasn't there a story recently about a guy who successfully installed Android on his iPhone? Or did that guy have special proprietary knowledge?

    Android runs fine on the openmoko.

    As far as life on Earth goes I agree with you, but my bet in the long term is on space travel, and I really believe that our unique cerebral cortex will keep us alive in the long term.

    Living off Earth gives us the ability to leave our mistakes behind. The separation between populations which is enforced once you are away from Earth will restart evolution. Many experiments will fail but others will succeed. What ever happens you I will not see the outcome.

    Personally I think that (similar to a proposal by Arthur C Clarke) we make a list of citizens, filter it for obvious problems such as age and criminal history, then pick a victim at random. Its got to be better than allowing people to campaign for the position.

    The question is what impact we are having on the climate with the stuff we are pumping in to the atmosphere and what, if anything, we should be doing about it.

    If natural global warming was deemed a threat to us we would have to look for ways to offset it. We are not children you know. It doesn't matter who "did it".

    Be careful what you ask for. There are plenty of good SF stories out there waiting to be filmed. Not all of them were written by Philip K Dick.

    But if a sequel is made I think it should be done at a remove from the original. I don't have a problem with 2010, for example, because Peter Hyams made no attempt to be Stanley Kubrick.
