Why just Linux. If they have there head screwed on they should be able to get it to compile on other Un*x's. FreeBSD at least.
The pointy haired suit wearing VC(s) would be much more willing to give out money to someone looking to make Linux easier to use, rather than FreeBSD. Linux is the hottest, latest buzzword, whereas FreeBSD is a small whisper in the corner.
It almost doesn't matter, at this point, who wins. RIAA and MP3 are going to drive themselves almost out of the market.
You say that MP3 is going to drive itself out of the market? Do you know how many hardware mp3 players there are in production today? Do you know how many WILL be in production? At comdex in Fall 1999, there were TONS of mp3 player manufacturers peddling their wares. And yet only about half of them have started shipping to the public! There are some we have not even seen yet! MP3 is a very well established standard, and that, I am glad for.
MP3 will not die, it is far too popular, especially with those in college. College students are taking mp3s to a new level, and they will continue when they graduate.
MP3 is here to stay, at least for a while. It is far too established to go away any time soon.
Hmmm? As a web developer I've always stripped any HTML tags or ran the submitted feedback through a parser that would only allow a limited set of formatting tags like "p", "a", and the like (a modified XML parser is good for that).
Actually, you did not fix the problem.
The "a" tag is how you create links, and the java script is embedded in the links itself. So allowing the "a" tag is nearly as bad as not filtering at all.
LinuxOne has had other "First 100 persons to sign up" offers. Of all of those who have signed up, nobody had received a copy.
At Comdex 1999 in Vegas last year, I did not recall seeing LinuxOne, but aparantly they were there, becuase I brought back a LinuxOne CD. Perhaps if they are at any other large conventions, they can be confronted face to face about these issues.
Whatever happened to adding more bandwidth to accomodate for the activity of the customer, the student? This is exactly the mentality of comcast @HOME. There is a 128k upload cap. The reason for this according to a Comcast@home representitive was becuase "People were sending CDs to one another". The customer is paying for this bandwidth, and if they want to use it to send CDs to their friends, then so be it. The business should be accomodating for the consumer, not the other way around.
Gah, I am not going to try and argue this any more, as this infurates me.
ACtually, people have already been working on the models for Quake 3 Team Fortress already. The original was a huge hit as a mod for Quake 1. You can choose 8 classes, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. It made Quake 1 a real team player game. If you did not work as a team, you lost.
THe website for the Q3 Team Fortress project is here
I Still prefer player Quake Team FOrtress over Q3Arena currently:)
The first time you experience bioluminescence is usallly pretty freaky.. The beached jelly fish on the beach at night are almost always a neat way to see what these folks are talking about. If you poke them with a stick, you can see what looks like electricity flowing throughout their bodies. (even after they are dead). It's a rather amazing sight - something you must experience your self.
If you want to see huge icons that go overboard, one word: WORKBENCH. I believe Workbench(for the amiga) let you have icons as big as you wanted, and its GUI was 10 times as uglier as X Windows.
Perhaps you have not seen any of the recent window manager. Check out some screen shots of themed enlightenment, at e.themes.org, or even a kde desktop at kde.themes.org. wm.themes.org is great place to make window maker look pretty.
To be anal, X in itself is not ugly, as it is just the framework. It is a window manager which can be ugly.. now, If you're talking about the details of X, then yes, it can be ugly:P
I can't seem the find the phrase you quoted anyhere in the review - also, the page you linked doesn't exist within that review (fury-14.html).
Where was this?
It is still there, I just checked it. I would cut and paste the whole paragraph, but for some reason netscape wont let me select anything on the page. The sentance I quoted is in the first paragraph, about 3/4 of the way down.
Yeah, Tom is a real dick for not walking himself into libel and defamation lawsuits. So you can feel better about yourself, mistalinux, I think I'll bring a few suits against you because that would obviously make you really happy...
There is a difference between being libelous and reporting the truth. However, isn't it already too late, since he is posting benchmarks in which only one company or product will appear the victor? Or perhaps by saying "It was the program that stated your video card sucked, not me" is his way of avoiding lawsuits.
Either way, if he knows something we don't, he should be obligated to let us, the consumer know, as it is the goal of his site. But, it is HIS site, and he is free to do what he wants with it.
This article seems very familiar... like maybe it was posted a week or two ago.
Call me crazy.
An article similar to this one was posted a few weeks ago, although there was nothing on Opera's web site acknowedging the existance of a Beta for Linux yet. The File was at metalab, so it is unknown how official it was. You can download that version here
Actually, this article shouldn't get any more comments than this one. Everybody already knows that open-source security models have the future, so is there really a point in debating all this again?
Actually, not everybody knows. The people making the attempt to fix the cheating in quake have a closed source solution. Find it here
I have used both Storm Linux.99 and Corel's latest distro, and have been un-impressed.
Stormix gave me the same icky feel as Turbo Linux a year ago, and Caldera when it was still in the 1.x versioning series. However, that says nothing about Storm Linux 2000.
Corel's Linux distribution is getting closer. They're marketing it as a desktop only distro, which simplifies it greatly, leaving lots of time for desktop improvements. However, the desktop is still just a themed KDE with a few extras. Thumbs up though for including Civ with the commercial version. Including games with a distro really hits the desktop market nicely, especially for the low price.
Although right now, RedHat seems to be the best of both the server and desktop.
To be fair though, my Saturn has a lower-tech model of this in my car. It blocks gas if the speed gets past 124MPH. Keeps the tires from melting. Not that I'd ever go 124MPH. Certainly not in Boston. Total cost: Probably $10
Actually, there are several factors that result in 124 being the cutoff. Your tires from the factory are probably not speed rated beyond 130 and are "H rated". There are speed ratings which go way beyond 124mph, such as V rated (up to 149), W rated (up to 178) and Z rated (obscenely fast). Another factor is that your gearing probably ends around there.. 5th gear probably has a top speed of at or around 124 mph. And the most probable reason, the car most likely cannot travel at such high rates of speed for very long without structural damage from wind. That is why in some of the endurance races in Nevada or Texas they tape their cars panels down to prevent them blowing off.
Well, I am the original poster, and this is a rather amusing thread. If any of you had actually read my question, you can see that I question Linus working FREE, that's right, FREE for Transmeta. The article points out that Linus works free for Transmeta. Therefore I question it.
Hrm, still no Diamond Viper 770. Under some other operating system, the drivers are superb - unfortunately, under Linux, we dont have the direct memory access from nVIDIA yet. Basic support under X is fairly decent though. Looking into my crystal ball, I see that I wont need to keep a Windows machine around to satisfy my Quake habits. (1600x1200 60FPS just ROCKS:)
This is a scam. I phoned their sales line and was not able to get ANY useful information out of them. The genetleman could barely speak english. When I asked about LinuxMac, he stated that it lets you read Macintosh disks under Linux. For ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS? GET REAL! The HFS utils has been around for as long as I can remember. This is absoultely absurd.
When I asked what the difference between RedHat and LinuxOne is, he said that there is little difference, and when I asked why I should buy LinuxOne instead of RedHat, he was unable to answer my question.
If you've got any furthur questions, their toll free sales line is: 1-877-Linux12
You can vote there for who you think it should've been. I would've hyperlinked it, but they might accuse it as a bot, since the HTTP REFER env var will show slashdot.

Right now, that's just how it works.
Oh, but you contridict yourself. Read below.
Once SDMI is on the market, you can bet they will aggressively sue anybody who peddles anything that does not comply.
You say that there are SDMI players on the market, yet you state that "Once SDMI is on the market", implying that SDMI players are not there yet.
